We propose a particle detector array that generalizes the biological compound eye of insects. We analyze the array's statistical performance including Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) and mean-square angular error (MSAE). We optimally design the array configuration by minimizing the worst case performance bound. We propose two source direction estimators, and show that the performance bound is attainable by both asymptotically

Barankin Bounds for Target Localization by MIMO Radars

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar/sonar systems transmit signals coded in time and space domains and have several advantages upon conventional systems. In this paper, the Barankin bound on target localization errors is used for analysis of the threshold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of MIMO radar/sonar systems. It is shown that the threshold SNR of MIMO systems with spatially orthogonal transmit signals, is significantly lower than with coherent transmit signals. Orthogonal signal transmission results in lower threshold SNR, because of the lower sidelobes in the likelihood function. The lower sidelobes are achieved, since MIMO configuration allows to process the signal in both transmit and receive modes. Simulation results show that the threshold SNR obtained by orthogonal signal transmission is lower by more than 10 dB compared to coherent signal transmission

In this paper, an alternative target density function (TDF) is proposed to image the radar targets in a dense target environment. It is obtained by considering a novel range and scanning angle plane different from the conventional methods. An alternative method is briefly proposed for smoothing the target density function by taking advantage of Walsh functions. Although the imaging is obtained via the phased array radars, the problem associated with beamforming in linear phased array radar system is bypassed in this new algorithm

In this paper, we consider the problem of detecting and locating buried landmines and subsurface objects by using seismic waves measured with sources and receivers on the surface. An imaging algorithm is proposed which uses the separated forward and reflected waves obtained via a Prony-based spectrum analysis technique. The imaging algorithm is followed by an energy detector. The resulting algorithms will are verified by using the experimental data containing mines and clutter

Dynamical Systems for Principal Singular Subspace Analysis

The computation of the principal subspaces is an essential task in many signal processing and control applications. In this paper novel dynamical systems for finding the principal singular subspace and/or components of arbitrary matrix are developed. The proposed dynamical systems are gradient flows or weighted gradient flows derived from the optimization of certain objective functions over orthogonal constraints. Global asymptotic stability analysis and domains of attractions of these systems are examined via Liapunov theory and LaSalle invariance principle. Weighted versions of these methods for computing principal singular components are also given. Qualitative properties of the proposed systems are analyzed in detail

In this paper generalizations of Sanger's learning rule for nondefinite matrices are explored. It is shown that the left and right principal components of any matrix can be computed so that these components upper triangulize the original matrix. We also modified the original Sanger's system to obtain new dynamical systems with a larger domain of attraction. Stability analysis for several Sanger's type systems for the standard and generalized principal, and minor component analyzers applied to nonsymmetric matrices is developed

We describe a method of tuning a simple detection process of stationary targets in SAR images. The tuning metric accounts for the squared-error performance of prescient estimators of target location and reflectivity. The efficiencies of these prescient estimators are compared to their Cramer Rao bounds (CRBs). The off-line tuning is performed by collecting statistics of scatterer estimation in SAR images created using sparse-array spotlight mode simulations

Several source localization algorithms have been proposed in the literature for acoustical source localization. Many of these algorithms make use of the generalized cross correlation (GCC). In order to facilitate the comparison between algorithms, the properties of the GCC should be as well understood as possible. In this work, it will be shown that by changing the assumptions on the signal, a more accurate model of the GCC can be obtained. This model will be used in several scenarios to compare localization algorithms

In 1987, Rockah and Schultheiss (1987) introduced the hybrid Cramer-Rao lower bound (HCRLB ) as an extension of the classical Cramer-Rao bound (CRLB). Whereas the classical CRLB is applicable to the estimation of non-random parameters, and the Bayesian CRLB applies to random parameters, the HCRLB is applicable to the joint estimation of random and non-random parameters. In this paper was review the basic theory of the multi-parameter Cramer-Rao type bounds in a unified framework. Then, we discus the limitations of the HCRLB which may explain why it has not been introduced till needed for a certain array processing application, where it has shown to be useful
