In this paper, we present the design of a cellular automata ASIC for Conformal Computing. The basic components of the design are small reconfigurable processing units called SCC-cells. The cell's functional capabilities avoid the need for multi-cell structures for some Boolean operations. Furthermore, when formed into arrays, the cells automatically control paths for configuration and clock distribution. Cellular arrays are incrementally extensible to conform to a wide range of computing needs.

This paper describes an approach to provide communication and synchronization services to hardware threads being executed on reconfigurable devices under the control of a software-based operating system. This work aims at enabling hardware circuits to be modeled as active, independently executing threads with access to all operating system services, instead of passive coprocessors that can simply be called from software. Communication and synchronization in a multithreaded reconfigurable system poses a challenge on two different levels: First, hardware circuits need to communicate and synchronize on a low level with the operating system kernel. Second, inter-thread communication and synchronization as the basic services provided by the multithreaded programming model need special consideration when applied to reconfigurable devices. We describe the concepts and methods to provide these services as implemented in the ReconOS operating system, and quantify the efficiency of the proposed techniques.

Multiprocessor platforms have been proposed as an enabling technology for Cognitive Radio. In this paper, we explore various FFT implementations on a multiprocessor prototype platform as building components for OFDM based Cognitive Radio. The results show that our FFT implementations on the multiprocessor platform are fast and energy efficient. Moreover, the FFT implementations can be dynamically reconfigured with relatively small reconfiguration overheads.
