Online disinformation actors are those individuals or bots who disseminate false or misleading information over social media, with the intent to sway public opinion in the information domain towards harmful social outcomes. Quantification of the degree to which users post or respond intentionally versus under social influence, remains a challenge, as individuals or organizations operating the profile are foreshadowed by their online persona. However, social influence has been shown to be measurable in the paradigm of information theory. In this paper, we introduce an information theoretic measure to quantify social media user intent, and then investigate the corroboration of intent with evolution of the social network and detection of disinformation actors related to COVID-19 discussions on Twitter. Our measurement of user intent utilizes an existing time series analysis technique for estimation of social influence using transfer entropy among the considered users. We have analyzed 4.7 million tweets originating from several countries of interest, during a 5 month period when the arrival of the first dose of COVID vaccinations were announced. Our key findings include evidence that: (i) a significant correspondence between intent and social influence;(ii) ranking over users by intent and social influence is unstable over time with evidence of shifts in the hierarchical structure;and (iii) both user intent and social influence are important when distinguishing disinformation actors from non-disinformation actors.

The high quality of simulation systems depends on precise input parameters. The underlying population model is crucial for an agent-based simulation system that studies the spread of infectious diseases. To build the population model, the system requires a household structure (HSD) of the simulated area, including a household list with recorded age information for each member. Previous research has shown that changes in household structure significantly impact disease-spreading patterns. However, with the increasing frequency of severe infectious diseases like SARS (the year 2002), H1N1 (the year 2009), and COVID-19 (the year 2019), using outdated HSD data is inappropriate. This paper proposes a Monte-Carlo-based approach to approximate the HSD for a given year using aggregated information from a range of years. The validation of our algorithm shows good matches with different diseases. As a result, we obtained an HSD for 2020 to study the spread of new COVID-19 variants and future outbreaks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this work, a simulation model of the thermal state of the work rolls at the hot rolling mill 2000 (m) of Public Joint-Stock Corporation Magnitogorsk iron and steel works (PJSC MMK) is built. A neural network was used as a tool for adjusting the thermophysical transfer coefficients of hot rolling mills. The constructed neural network is a multilayer perceptron, consisting of an input layer, two hidden layers, and an output layer. The neural network is implemented in PyTorch, a scientific computing package based on the interpreted Python programming language. To train the neural network, we used the basic data array obtained from the control system of the hot rolling mill. During industrial experiments, the temperature of the work rolls was measured using HotFind-DXT series thermal imagers developed by SDS. A neural network has been built that allows adapting the thermophysical heat transfer coefficients with an average relative error of 11.7%. A neural network will speed up and simplify the selection of thermophysical coefficients for models of the thermal state of work rolls and adequately assess the current thermal state of work rolls during the rolling process. Using a neural network, a model of the thermal state of work rolls was developed. © 2020 IEEE.

Credit card fraud is one of the critical issues due to its significant losses to both financial institutions and individuals in the society. The accurate detection and prevention of fraudulent activities are necessary to protect financial institutions and individuals. This paper performs a comparative experimental study to detect credit card frauds, as well as to tackle the imbalance classification problem by applying different machine learning algorithms for handling imbalanced datasets. Our study shows that there is no need to process imbalance dataset by applying resampling techniques to measure the performance of our classifiers and it is sufficient to measure the performance through the three-performance measurements (Accuracy, Sensitivity, and Area Under Precision/Recall Curve (PRC)) to prove the accuracy of the prediction of classification. Finally, by handling imbalanced classifications with imbalance datasets, one can minimize the number of false alarms, reduce damages to financial institutions and individuals, increase accurate for fraud detection, and decrease the occurrence of fraud cases using machine learning techniques. © 2020 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS)

Influence can be used to propagate the (fake or true) information in social media where a set of influential nodes (individuals) in social media can leverage their connections (e.g., followers in Tweeter) to impact others. Lately, most of the social interactions take place on-line where followers/members can get the information directly from their following accounts. Influential users can be used to propagate fake or false information to their followers. This paper analyzes social interactions in Twitter to studying the influence blocking maximization to minimize the propagation of fake information in social media by discovering influential users and their impact to spread fake/false information among their users/followers. Specifically, Greedy algorithm is studied to discover influence of spreading false/fake information among users in Twitter where malicious users could exploit influential users to gain more exposure to their malicious data. Results show that the influence of spreading fake or false information increases with the popularity of user through his/her followers and retweets. Furthermore, attributes such as number of followers, number of likes, retweets, etc. have huge impact on the influence for propagating the information in social media. © 2020 Society for modeling & simulation international (SCS)

Nowadays, low latency has become one of the primary goals of congestion control in data center networks. To achieve low latency, many congestion control algorithms have been proposed, wherein DX is the first latency-based one. Specifically, DX tackles the accurate latency measurement problem, reduces the flow completion time and outperforms the de facto DCTCP algorithm significantly in term of median queueing delay. Although the advantages of DX have been confirmed by experimental results, the behaviors of DX have not been fully revealed. Accordingly, some drawbacks of DX under special environment are unexplored. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct fluid-flow analysis over DX, deducing sufficient condition for the stability of DX and revealing the behaviors of DX. Analytical results uncover two problems of DX: (1) it has poor throughput when either the base RTT is very large or the number of flows is relatively small;(2) it suffers from large queueing delay when either the base RTT is relatively small or the number of flows is very large. These results are instructive to the improvement and deployment of DX. simulation results based on NS-3 verify our analytical results. © 2019, IFIP international Federation for Information Processing.

Carbon dioxide sequestration in geological formations has been widely recognized as one of the most promising ways to manage greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate its adverse impact to the environment. Depleted gas fields are one of the potential targets for CO2 storage given its proven capacity, sealing structures and existing infrastructure that may be suitable to be re-used, hence provide confidence in storage security and potential cost-saving (IEAGHG Report, 2009). However, the technical challenges remain and this study was conducted to evaluate the impact of mineral dissolution and/or precipitation on rock petrophysical properties, mainly porosity and permeability during CO2 injection in a carbonate depleted gas reservoir. The M4 field is a carbonate build-up from Sarawak Basin, offshore Malaysia that had produced approximately 400 Bscf of natural gas from 2002 and 2006. The field had reached its targeted recovery factor of about 70% and ready to be abandoned as a depleted gas field, making it a good candidate for the CO2 storage site. Data such as pressure history, well logs, core and fluid samples are extensively available to conduct CO2 storage study in this field. The petrophysical properties are very heterogeneous with average porosity of about 30% and permeability ranging from 10 to 300 millidarcy. The field’s mineralogy is mainly calcite, with a fraction of dolomite and traces of clay minerals. A full-field, fully coupled dynamic and geochemical simulations study was carried out using actual data from the field incorporating the reservoir heterogeneities and actual production history. Compositional reservoir simulators (ECLIPSE 300 and CMG-GEM) were used to simulate the gas production phase, the CO2 injection phase and the long-term fate of the CO2 post-injection up to hundreds of years. simulation results from the gas production phase are history-matched and the predicted results for CO2 injection and post-injection phases are compared with the field’s

The rise of offshore wind energy production poses a complex resource allocation problem with respect to operation and maintenance (O&M) of offshore wind farms: O&M tasks need be performed by teams of specialists, subject to limited availability of qualifications, means of transport and appropriate weather conditions. Among others, NP-complete problems like shortest return routing ("Travelling Salesman") and job scheduling are embedded into the challenge of determining O&M schedules, which in real-world wind farm operation is often still conducted by hand. In this work, we address this problem by proposing a heuristic approach based on a "compatibility rating", attempting to anticipatorily allocate tasks to teams such that the remaining tasks not yet allocated can still be conducted efficiently, e.g. by a different team. This means of decision support relies on simulation to evaluate the feasibility of the schedules generated.

In this work we present a port-Hamiltonian supported control system design aimed at stabilizing a DC-DC Buck converter driving a nonlinear dissipative load. A desired closed-loop dynamics in the form of a port-Hamiltonian system is proposed, whose parameterization enforces the asymptotic stability of the desired equilibrium point. Moreover, the closed loop incorporates a first order dynamic extension allowing to reject constant disturbances on the load side. We prove that the closed loop is ISS respect to unmatched disturbances. To extend this property to disturbances acting on the supply side we add a standard PI output regulator to the previous closed loop. The performance of the closed loop is verified via simulation.
