The Web 2.0 is often characterized by an informal participation, which means a free cooperation of as many as possible without any restraints from organizations, processes, or technical platforms. In contrast to public communities, an official organization like a company consists of rather formal structures which define what a member should do and how to fulfill a task by assigning a role. If such a formal organization supports a community, does the balance between informal and formal structures will change? This short paper presents the results of a field study about a socio-technical community called 'InPUD' which is part of a faculty. The main conclusion is that a specific degree of digital formalization in online groups is needed for successful online structures and sustainability. By using new media like Web 2.0, the balance between informal and formal structures in institutions will be changed. © ISLS.

Intelligent transportation system (ITS) refers to efforts to add communications technology to transport infrastructure in a way to manage factors that usually are at odds with each other such as vehicle wear, safety, fuel consumption, transportation times and air pollution. Traffic modeling of passengers in large cities is one of ITS branches. In such cities like Tabriz, passenger traffic congestion is one of the most important problems. Congestion reduces efficiency of public transportation and increases travel time, air pollution, and fuel consumption. Major part of traffic congestion in large cities is caused by public transportation such as taxies and buses. Therefore by modeling passenger distributions appropriately, optimum distribution of taxies and buses will be achieved to decrease traffic congestion and increase efficiency of public transportation. In this paper labeled hyper multi digraph method as data-oriented models is used to model passenger distributions in Tabriz.

In the Human-computer interaction (HCI) literature, it has been recommended that user involvement and HCI considerations in the software development life cycle (SDLC) is an important mechanism for a successful system implementation. However, it is still unclear to what extend do the user involvement and HCI consideration have been adopted by software development practitioners. This paper reports the results of a survey on the importance of HCI in SDLC from practitioner perspective. The survey involves thirty two software designers. The objectives of the study are to identify the state of user involvement in SDLC and to identify the HCI elements that have been addressed. Results have found that many of practitioners involve users in SDLC, but majority are only during the requirement analysis phase. The findings also reveal that HCI elements on functionality are well addressed, however, the non-functionality elements such as cultural and affective values have not been emphasized by practitioners. The paper concludes with recommendation to further investigate on user awareness on the importance of user involvement in the software development. Copyright © 2009 ACM.

In this paper, we describe an approach to communicate with computers in virtual reality (VR) system, this VR system can provide an operating sequence saved in an expert database by using mouse-click event. The VR system allows supervisor to set a series of training procedures, then to test operators whether could follow operating procedures or not. Furthermore, the testing procedures are saved into a XML file which can be transformed into instructions. This means that testing sequence can be captured and transformed into operation instructions automatically, as while as, the operating instructions also can be analyzed by a data mining system. In the end, Mal-operation of processing plants that could cause an injury to people and facilities can be avoided. ©2009 IEEE.

The rapidly aging society in Japan has resulted in an increased demand for electric wheelchairs to enhance the mobility of elderly persons. However, the increased use of electric wheelchairs means an increase in the number of accidents related to wheelchair operation errors. The majority of errors involve the joystick interface because its controllability is highly sensitive and not very intuitive compared to the vehicle-type interface. This paper describes a newly developed intuitive electric wheelchair interface that uses a laser pointer. The direction of the laser pointer is automatically detected by camera and analyzed for movement direction. To ensure smooth driving by using the laser pointer, we apply fuzzy logic. To confirm the proposed method, several simulations were conducted and examined. © 2009 SICE.

Higher education institutes (HEIs) are believed as catalyst for the economic progress of any country particularly and for the whole world generally. This study analyses ICT (Information and communication technology) -based teaching and learning issues at Pakistani higher education (HE) level and efforts to devise a strategy as solution to those issues as a result. Using normative Delphi method which spanned to two rounds, a comprehensive questionnaire was developed through which panelists were asked to rate, select, and add (if necessary) from the list of diverse set of issues along-with their best available solutions in the dimension of ICT strategic framework for tertiary education. Panelists not only discussed ICT-based issues and their proposed solutions but also stratified a ZPD incidence development strategy which chalks out measures HE authorities should take in order to properly integrate ICTs in their HEIs. It was determined that ICT integration in HE need to be in lined with proper strategy in order to get their true benefits. ©2009 IEEE.

An Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) is a digital document designed to operate interactively with the user. In order to organize lots of technical data in IETMs, an IETM data model is needed. In this paper, we propose an extensible IETM data model which consists of a minimal set of data types to define the core processing logic of IETM browsers. Domain-specific data types are created as specializations of existing types and are allowed to reuse the existing processing logic. Our development experiences show that the data model greatly reduces the implementation complexity of IETM processing engines. ©2009 IEEE.

SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) is a component model, which can integrate the different function modules by defined interfaces in system. SOA technology has been used wildly in the field of enterprise realized the enterprise applications integration. Struts is an structure of MVC based on SOA, using J2EE based on the combination of Struts framework and web application to develop information management system not only can effectively shorten the development cycle simplify the code and improve the efficiency of the system development, but also enhance the maintainability and scalability of the system. In this paper, Art Examination Management System based on SOA has been established. The basic idea of the system is to integrate art examination resources freely and share data and functions. The Art Examination Management System based on SOA can eliminate information islands, simplify applications. Finally it can make the automation and high efficiency of the management come true in the art examination work. ©2009 IEEE.

Most computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines used in Thai industry are imported. With regular maintenance, these CNC machines could last up to 10 years. After that, the owners would either purchase a new machine or upgrade the old model;the later process is widely known as "retrofitting." However, purchasing a new CNC machine is a big financial burden for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) whereas retrofitting usually do not cost much less because most CNC machines are developed based on closed technology. In addition, many models are discontinued after 10 years of service making retrofitting even more costly or nearly impossible. Such problem also permeates educational institutes such as Thai Vocational Technical Colleges, which usually own 5-10 CNC milling and turning machines per institute;that amounts to 400 machines in total that need retrofitting after 10 years of usage. Most of these machines require new industrial motion control cards which had been long discontinued. Hence, an industrial grade CNC motion control prototype system based on open architecture and modular technologies has been developed as a pioneer research project for retrofitting old milling machines for Vocational Technical Colleges. © 2009 SICE.

Today, the B2B E-business systems in most enterprises usually have multiple heterogeneous and independent systems which are based on different platforms and operate in different functional departments. To deal with the increased services in future, an enterprise needs to expand its system continuously. This, however, will cause great inconvenience to the future system maintenance. To implement E-business successfully, a unified internal E-business integration environment must be established to integrate the internal system and thus realize a unified internal mechanism within the enterprise E-business system. The SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) architecture, however, can well meet the above requirements. The integration of SOA- architecture-based applications can reduce the dependency of different types of IT systems, reduce the cost of system maintenance and the complexity of the IT system operation, increase the flexibility of the system deployment, and at the same time exclude the barrier of service innovation. Research and application of SOA-architecture-based enterprise application systems has become a very important research project at present. As an important SOA implementation, Web services is a relatively new technology widely accepted by people. This is because Web services provides a distributed computing method for the heterogene- ous applications integrated in the Internet. It can integrate the applications running on the distributed servers which are connected through Intranet, Extranet, and Internet together. Based on SOA, this document designs an enterprise E-business application model and realizes a flexible and expandable E-business platform. © 2009 IEEE.
