We address the issue of sustainability of practice, which we regard as crucial for the sustainability of the community at large. In the absence of material reward, sustaining a specialized activity such as programming is not trivial especially when members move often in and out of the community. Our case is the group of voluntary, amateur student programmers from a European-wide student organization. We present this setting as an Amateur Community and as a Community of Practice, and show how such framing helps in understanding sustainability of practice. Although being totally voluntary and managing a large intranet, the group has been thriving for six years. To explain such high practice sustainability we examine the role of the technology framework used by the group during this time. We then propose a more general framework for understanding practice sustainability in the context of amateur communities of practice. © 2009 ACM.

A major problem that most researchers in developing countries face is that of data availability. The UAE is experiencing advances in many areas;however, availability of raw data is not one of those areas. We are interested in measuring the level of response and adaptation as well as the correctness of the practice of e-learning in non-educational organizations in the UAE. We reviewed the literature to learn about the state-of the art of global practices and experiences of e-learning in non-educational organizations. Unfortunately, we were unable to find any reference to similar work that was done for the UAE market. This paper presents factors of implementing E-learning in non-educational organizations and how does that apply to the UAE culture. UAE based survey with a thorough analysis of the results are presented too.

This paper presents the design and development of an intelligent voice recognition chat hot. The paper presents a technology demonstrator to verify a proposed framework required to support such a hot (a web service). While a black box approach is used, by controlling the communication structure, to and from the web-service, the web-service allows all types of clients to communicate to the server from any platform. The service provided is accessible through a generated interface which allows for seamless XML processing;whereby the extensibility improves the lifespan of such a service. By introducing an artificial brain, the web-based hot generates customized user responses, aligned to the desired character. Questions asked to the hot, which is not understood is further processed using a third-party expert system (an online intelligent research assistant), and the response is archived, improving the artificial brain capabilities for future generation of responses.

Knowledge of English in the Philippines is important not only in the work place, but as well as in education. English is the primary language of instruction in the Philippines, even in public schools. Students who have difficulty understanding English will also have trouble with the other subjects like Science and Math. However, there is a lack of qualified English school teachers, particularly in the public school system where the teachers themselves use wrong grammar and mispronounce words. To help alleviate the problem, our group has partnered with the Department of Education to create an electronic reader. The electronic reader can demonstrate proper pronunciation and can supplement the lessons taught in a traditional classroom environment with interactive exercises and activities. A complete Grade 3 English course in an electronic game console format was developed and deployed in an elementary school to test its effectiveness. About 300 students got involved in the experiment. After one school year of monitoring and evaluation, students who used the reader showed improved scores in government administered tests. Students from low performing sections had particularly significant gains.

Software development is a complex and multidimensional task. Often software development faces serious problems of meeting key constraints of cost and time. Big projects which are well planned and analyzed, can end up in a disaster because of mismanagement in cost estimation and time allocation. Program slicing has unique importance in addressing the issues of cost and time. It is broadly applicable static program analysis technique which provides mechanism to analyze and understand the program behavior for further restructuring and refinement. In this paper, authors investigate the relationship between program slicing and software development phases on the basis of empirical studies conducted in the past and also establish the fact that how program slicing can be helpful in making software system cost and time effective. RFID has been applied in many industries, especially in logistics. Usually, RFID is used as an identification that replaces barcode or combined with barcode. RFID has many advantages, for example, it can be read fast and improves the efficiency of data gathering. This paper introduces a RFID application system in warehouse management that is used to identify cargo when inbound and outbound. Based on Java language, this paper develops low level communication functions, which can implement the communication between monitoring computer and RFID reader. The cargo inbound and outbound business procedures are designed to show the RFID application in logistics warehouse operation. ©2009 IEEE.

According to the basic theories, calculation and analysis principles, design methods for strengthening structure, combined with the existing technical codes and specifications, as well as other relevant standards of strengthening, the authors have developed a software JGCAD for strengthening the existing structures, which is a computer aided design(CAD) tool for retrofiting and repairing design. It can promote the development of strengthening field. The strengthening of buildings can extent their service life, it can reduce energy and resource consumption. The paper mainly introduces the principle of development, functions and characteristics of JGCAD, including secondary developing the AutoCAD platform, and adopting the Visual Basic6.0 and efficient data management technology. These data and informations can be transferred to AutoCAD by ActiveX, so the corresponding construction plans can be produced directly. Finally, depending on the viewpoint of the trends of CAD development and research of JGCAD, the authors summarize some further perfect aspects for the strengthening software.

Cell breathing technique is commonly used in cellular network such as Wide Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) to overcome load congestion by expanding or shrinking the cell coverage. This paper presents the study of the cell breathing boundary of urban environment for WCDMA. The base station cell coverage may expand or shrink depending on the number of mobile station being served. The COST231 HATA model is used in this study to predict the cell coverage for urban environment. The actual received signal strength indicator (RSSI) obtained by conducting drive test measurement are compared to the received signal code power (RSCP) of the COST231 HATA propagation model. The error calculated in the measurements enables to determine the minimum discrepancy between RSSI and RSCP data. Thus the COST231 HATA model can be used to predict correctly the cell coverage for urban environment. The result also shows that during light load the cell coverage radius is 0.18 km and then decreases to 0.15 km so as to limit soft handover and hence reduces load congestion.

To describe full part information and promote development of CAD/CAM technique, six feature operator algorithms such as PAD, SHAFT are defined by analyzing static feature structure of parts;by research of dynamic semantic relation between features, two reasonable constraint features "AND constraint feature" and "OR constraint feature" are attained;organic combination of them realizes dynamic semantic connection between static features, and feature-based part semantic relationship geometry model (PSRGM) is built. Based on dynamic generating process of PSRGM and feature coding structure, feature gene coding is completed, and DNA coding of part feature series is realized. Taking the crank for example, application of this method is illustrated. © 2009 IEEE.
