Digital manufacturing has been considered, over the last decade, as a highly promising set of technologies for reducing product development times and cost as well as for addressing the need for customization, increased product quality, and faster response to the market. This paper describes the evolution of information technology systems in manufacturing, outlining their characteristics and the challenges to be addressed in the future. Together with the digital manufacturing and factory concepts, the technologies considered in this paper include computer-aided design, engineering, process planning and manufacturing, product data and life-cycle management, simulation and virtual reality, automation, process control, shopfloor scheduling, decision support, decision making, manufacturing resource planning, enterprise resource planning, logistics, supply chain management, and e-commerce systems. These technologies are discussed in the context of the digital factory and manufacturing concepts.

This study is a quantitative-based analysis of the end-of-year examination grades from a module delivered using a mixture of classroom lectures and computer-based sessions. It is identified that e-learning engagement had a positive and statistically significant impact on performance. An additional hour of computer-based participation is found to increase a student's mark by approximately 0.75%. The paper also finds evidence of personal-characteristic- related differences in teaching effectiveness. It is found that female students benefited significantly less from computer-based learning than did their male counterparts. Tentative evidence is also found that students from poorer economic backgrounds obtain a greater benefit from a computer based delivery medium. It is concluded that this study has identified two potentially significant pedagogical issues in respect to computer-based teaching. The results indicate that to improve teaching effectiveness and academic achievement, teachers should consider developing delivery strategies that maximize engagement and also take into account learning-styles differences.

The Internet has opened up a range of new communication opportunities for people with special needs since it is an accessible communication medium that provides an opportunity to exchange practical information and support and to experience an accepting relationship with less prejudice. To date, few computer-mediated support intervention programs have been designed especially to support the socio-emotional needs of people with special needs. This paper presents the results of a study that evaluated an electronic mentoring intervention program designed to provide socio-emotional support for proteges with disabilities by mentors who also have disabilities. Using a qualitative research design, the study characterized the electronic mentoring process and its contributions from the mentors' point of view. The findings provided support for the potential of electronic mentoring for personal development and empowerment of young adults with special needs.

In this paper, we present a new user heartbeat and preference aware music recommendation system. The system can not only recommend a music playlist based on the user's music preference but also the music playlist is generated based on the user's heartbeat. If the user's heartbeat is higher than the normal heartbeat which is 60-100 beats per minutes (age 18 and over) or 70-100 beats per minutes (age 6-18), the system generates a user preferred music playlist using Markov decision process to transfer the user's heartbeat back to the normal range with the minimum time cost; if the user's heartbeat is normal, the system generates a user preferred music playlist to keep the user's heartbeat within the normal range; If the user's heartbeat is lower than the normal heartbeat, the system generates a user preferred music playlist using Markov decision process to uplift the user's heartbeat back to the normal range with the minimum time cost.
