The development of ambient assisted living (AAL) systems, which are tailored to health or elder care, requires specific methods and tools. AAL systems make often use of wireless sensor networks, machine learning algorithms and sensory devices. Since wireless sensor networks and their sensors are inhomogeneous, it became apparent that such systems need to cope with different hardware platforms, different programming languages, unreliable wireless communication, energy constraints, data analysis algorithms, recognition of situations, and deployment options. Developers to date tend to use a bottom-up approach: hardware components dictate the development of AAL systems and thereby restrict the range of use cases that can be realized; domain experts by contrast would prefer a top-down approach and model the systempsilas functionality independently from the hardware platform. Currently available software development environments and tools do not adequately support domain experts and developers to accomplish these tasks efficiently. This paper presents methods that support domain experts in their top-down approach, as well as technically experienced developers in their bottom-up approach. The implemented tools enable a model-driven software development process (from platform-independent modeling to generating AAL application code) and thus facilitate programming AAL systems.

This paper focused on developing a fully passive device prototype named passive in-line monitoring (PIM) device, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for monitoring purpose without affecting the transmission in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. This device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the field engineers or technicians to simply connect it to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine the location of break point before repairing. A passive tapper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. The entire optical components that had been used in the circuit design including connectors, splices, optical isolators, and optical couplers. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

Online backup service software provides automated, offsite, secure online data backup and recovery for remote computers. How to satisfy functional requirements and guarantee the fault tolerance of online backup service software is a difficult but crucial problem faced by software designers. In this paper, we investigate to incorporate the fault tolerant techniques in the system design, and propose a fault-tolerant online backup service model (FOBSM) to guide the development of online backup service system. The FOBSM comprises four components: backup client (BC), backup server (BS), storage server (SS), and online backup exception handler (OBEH). The first three components constitute three-party functional units, whereas OBEH serves as the centralized exception handling mechanism, which is devised to receive the external exceptions raised by the other entities, transform them into a global exception, and propagate it to the related entities to handle, so as to improve the fault tolerance of the software greatly. In order to provide precise and explicit idioms to system designers, we use Object-Z language to specify the FOBSM. Following the Object-Z reasoning rules, we reason about the fault tolerant properties of FOBSM and demonstrate that it can improve fault tolerance of the online backup service software effectively.

It is widely believed that computer games have great potential as a compelling and effective tool for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, particularly for younger students in grades K-12. In previous work we created several prototype games that allow students to use sound and acoustics simulations to explore general scientific concepts. These games were developed using Adobe Flash and are accessible through a standard Web browser, making them particularly well-suited for education environments where custom software may be difficult to install. Pilot testing our games with local K-12 classrooms has demonstrated potential benefits in terms of captivating student interest, but has also revealed multiple avenues for improvement and refinement. We have recently developed a unified development platform that overcomes prior architectural limitations to enable dynamic sound processing and synthesis within Flash applications to improve responsiveness and create rich interactive experiences. Since they are constructed in ActionScript, the relatively straightforward scripting language of Flash, these games can be easily extended or adapted to target highly specific lessons and concepts. In this paper, we detail several specific lesson plans for mathematics and science education developed using customized versions of our previous games.

Liberia is a country emerging from years of protracted and devastating civil conflict. Left without any fixed line telephone infrastructure, it relies solely on the mobile phone for telephony. This study investigates the usage of mobile phones in this immediate post-conflict setting. In particular, we adopt the uses and gratifications approach to media research, giving focus to both instrumental and intrinsic motivations for use. Mobile phone users in both the capital city of Monrovia and in various rural areas were surveyed using the Q methodology, which identified distinct perspectives within these urban and rural groups. Participants were then sorted into groups where each group contained users with similar perspectives on their mobile phones. These identified groups included sets of users who saw their phones as productivity enhancers, means of connectivity to family and friends, essential business tools, technological curiosities, and sources of personal security. The idea of a phone as a stylish object was markedly rejected, especially in rural areas. We contrast these Q-sort results from Liberia with previous work from Kigali, Rwanda, finding differences especially as related to security.

E-learning has become a major trend in the computer assisted teaching with the rapid development of Internet technologies. Web-based education is a very important component of education technology. One of the main advantage is the classroom and platform independence. Implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to support efforts to improve the Web's intelligence and provide better services to the end users. In this study, three popular AI methods: Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Adaptive Network Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) were benchmarked in terms of effectiveness and performance within a Web-based environment. As the pilot test, ¿History of Civilization¿ class was selected. The question classification abilities depending on the item responses of students, item difficulties of questions, and question levels were determined by using Gaussian Normal Curve. Comparison study was conducted by considering the performance and class correctness of the sample questions (n=13) by using the given three inputs. The results showed that ANFIS has better performance than ANN and AVM in web-based education.

The DNA sequence data is one of the basic and important data among biological data. The DNA sequence pattern mining has got wide attention and rapid development. Traditional algorithms for the sequential pattern mining may generate lots of redundant patterns when dealing with the DNA sequence. The maximal frequent pattern is preferable to express the function and structure of the DNA sequence. Base on the characteristics of the DNA sequence, the author develops the joined maximal pattern segments algorithm-JMPS, for the maximal frequent patterns mining of the DNA sequence. First, the maximal frequent pattern segments base on adjacent generated. Then, longer maximal frequent pattern can be obtained by combining the above segments, at the same time deleting the nonmaximal patterns. The algorithm can deal with the DNA sequence data efficiently.

Although cloud computing is generally recognized as a technology which will has a significant impact on IT in the future. However, Cloud computing is still in its infancy, currently, there is not a standard available for it, portability and interoperability is also impossible between different Cloud Computing Service Providers, therefore, handicaps the widely deploy and quick development of cloud computing, there is still a long distance to the fine scenery which theoretically depicted by cloud computing. We analyze the problems in the current state of the art, put forward that Open Cloud Computing Federation is an inevitable approach for the widely use of cloud computing and to realize the greatest value of it. Accordingly, we proposal the MABOCCF (Mobile Agent Based Open Cloud Computing Federation) mechanism in this paper, it combines the advantages of Mobile Agent and cloud computing to provide a realization for the Open Cloud Computing Federation, MABOCCF can span over multiple heterogeneous Cloud Computing platforms and realizes portability and interoperability, it can be a beginning of open cloud computing federation and a future part of cloud computing. We also present in this paper the rationalities and the motivations for the combination of Mobile Agent and Cloud Computing, finally, a prototype is given with a performance analysis.

In this article, an innovation pole is defined as a regional industrial innovation subsystem producing dense innovative activities, being representative in innovation scale, and driving the development of regional economy. We regard the regional innovation system as a symbiosis evolution system of the multi-innovation poles. Then, using of the theory and methods of ecology, this article analyses the symbiosis evolution model of multi-innovation poles and builds up the dynamics model of the multi-innovation poles symbiosis evolution system. Finally, we draw a conclusion through the simulation study that: different values of symbiosis coefficient are the only difference between regional innovation systems besides the strength or weakness of innovation poles.
