An intelligent traffic lights controller dealing with the dynamic traffic flow is presented in the paper. The vehicle delay at the intersection is reduced by using this method based on the fuzzy algorithm to distribute each roadway's green time. The input of the fuzzy control algorithm is the vehicle flow on the current traffic lane and the difference between the length of the waiting traffic team on the next phase and the current vehicle flow; the output is the green delay time of the current phase or the minimum green time of the next phase. The anti-jamming capability of system is improved by the software design. Compared with the traditional fixed time method, the design scheme and lab experiment results show that the proposed method can not only reduce the delay time at the intersection, but also is valuable in practice.

Recent advances in information and communication technologies permitted the design and development of new patient-centric models for the provision of better health care services and enhancement of patient's self-management. This paper presents a prototype mobile phone application which is being designed to improve the self-management of individuals with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM). The developed application using the Microsoft .Net framework runs on 3G mobile phones. The application consists of five major interfaces for the management of: blood glucose measurements, blood pressure measurements, insulin dosage, food/drink intake and physical activity. Furthermore, the user has the following capabilities i) to keep notes, and ii) in case of an emergency to press a button, in order to transmit immediately his/her position to both an emergency call center, and the attendant physician. It has to be noted, that the above mentioned data are stored locally to the mobile phone, and regularly transmitted via the mobile network to a dedicated hospital web-server. Technical evaluation of the prototype indicates that the use of the mobile network makes feasible the self-management of T1DM.

Many DSP, image and video processing applications use finite impulse response (FIR) filters as basic computing blocks. Our paper introduces an efficient dynamically reconfigurable FIR system that can adapt the number of filter coefficients, and their values, in real time. Here, dynamic reconfiguration is used to switch between different, pre-computed, fixed-point realizations of different digital filters. Our platform relies on the use of distributed arithmetic blocks, mapped to the specific LUTs of the underlying FPGA. Dynamic reconfiguration of the coefficients is limited to changing a small number of relevant LUT contents, while leaving the rest of the architecture intact. We investigate the dynamic system throughput as a function of the dynamic reconfiguration rate.

This paper presents a learning object organization model based on conceptual domain, which is a development based on the SCORM Specification. Firstly the Conceptual Domain knowledge is represented as a standardized form for sharability and reusability, and then the learning objects can be packaged based on the Conceptual Domain for interchanging them among different e-learning systems. In this model, the Conceptual Domain knowledge is described by extending the organizations section of the SCORM CAM Information Model, and the designer can organize learning objects of a course by the Conceptual Domain in a Content Package conforming to this model. In addition, the model's instance is compliant with the SCORM Run-time Environment. Finally, a case study is presented to verify the feasibility of the method.

This paper briefly summarizes some valuable properties of ART architectures that are advantageous in engineering applications, and outlines some areas of likely future progress, together with their motivations. Some of ART's advantages, such as its stability, biological plausibility, and responsiveness to the stability-plasticity dilemma, are well-described in the literature. This paper's focus will be on the advantages of scalability, speed, configurability, potential for parallelization, and ability to interpret the results. A valuable new area of innovation will be the application of ART to more generalized data structures such as trees and grammars. Continued progress on distributed representations would be valuable because of increased data representation capability, both in terms of system capacity and template complexity. Another valuable area of progress would be removal of the dichotomy between match-based and error-based learning.

Interruptions are a daily reality for professional programmers. Unfortunately, the strategies programmers use to recover lost knowledge and resume work have not yet been well studied. In this paper, we perform exploratory analysis on 10,000 recorded programming sessions of 85 programmers to understand the variety of strategies used by programmers for resuming programming tasks. In our study, we find that only 10% of the programming sessions have coding activity start in less than a minute, only 7% of the programming sessions involve no navigation to other locations prior to editing, and find evidence of programmers seeking other sources of task context during task resumption. Based on the analysis, we suggest how task resumption might be better supported in future development tools.

In this paper, we present a GA based methodology for extracting rules from radial basis function neural network trained by differential evolution. Rules are extracted using GATree. Here outputs predicted by the differential evolution trained radial basis function network along with the input variables are fed to the GATree for rule extraction purpose. The performance of the hybrid method was tested on three benchmark datasets namely Iris, Wine and Wisconsin Breast Cancer, using 10-fold cross validation. The rules extracted by the hybrid yielded high accuracies on all datasets.

Nowadays computer programs are objectively tested and marked by automated programming assessment systems in computer science education. Dynamic analysis and static analysis are two major approaches in the field of automated programming assessment. Methods adopted by dynamic and static analysis have been emphasized and detailed in this paper. Advantages and disadvantages of them implemented in instruction have been analyzed when taking instructional practice into consideration. Although many automated programming assessment systems have been proved to be of great help to both instructors and students in programming instruction, several problems remain unsolved, such as the security problem and algorithms for automatic generation of test data in dynamic analysis, low accuracy and precision of correctness and functionality assessment in static analysis, thus optimal approaches are still under research. The way of effective use of dynamic analysis and static analysis in instructional practice is also suggested in order that instructors can use the results of this study to choose the most appropriate approach in the context of a particular instructional goal. Finally, standardization of automated programming assessment systems, way to open source code and intelligent tutor system for automated programming assessment are expected to come into exist in the future.
