This paper reports the development of novel micro-force sensing tools for retinal microsurgery. Retinal microsurgery requires extremely delicate manipulation of retinal tissue, and tool-to-tissue interaction forces are frequently below human perceptual thresholds. Further, the interaction between the tool shaft and sclera makes accurate sensing of forces exerted on the retina very difficult with previously developed force sensing schemes, in which the sensor is located outside the eye. In the work reported here, we incorporate 160 mum Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain sensors into the tool shaft to sense forces distal to the sclera. The sensor is applicable both with robotically manipulated and freehand tools. Preliminary results with a 1 degree-of-freedom (DOF) sensor have demonstrated 0.25 mN resolution, and work is underway to develop 2 and 3 DOF tools. The design and analysis of the force sensing tool is presented with preliminary testing data and some initial experiments using the tool with both freehand and robotic manipulation.

Significant technological advancement in the current electronic era has influenced the work processes of private and government business entities. E-Government is one such area where almost every country is emphasizing and automating their work processes. Software architecture is the integral constituent of any software system with not only cumbersome modeling and development but require heedful evaluation. Considering this aspect we have highlighted in this paper, security evaluation of an ongoing e-society project ESAM using Architectural Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM). ESAM is a Web based system intended to provide e-services to the Swedish community residents. ATAM is primarily used for architectural evaluation aligned with the quality goals i.e. performance, availability and modifiability of an organization. We present research analysis for characterization, stimuli, and architectural decisions to evaluate software architecture with respect to security measures using ATAM. This security characterization will serve as a tool to evaluate security aspects of a software architecture using ATAM. We believe that ATAM capability of evaluating software security will provide potential benefits in secure software development.

With the growing needs for advanced functionalities in modern embedded systems, it is now necessary to integrate multiple processors in the system, preferably on a single chip, to support the required computing complexity. The problem is that such multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) architecture is very complex and its internal behavior is very difficult to track. An effective tool for profiling the behavior of the MPSoC system is in great need. Such a tool is very useful during system design for exploiting various options and identifying potential bottlenecks. In this paper, we introduce the multiprocessor profiling architecture (MPPA) - a general framework for profiling MPSoC embedded systems. The MPPA framework entails the use of FPGA emulation for the target system, the embedding of performance counters for recording system events, and the development of OS drivers for collecting the profiled data. To demonstrate its use, we show the implementation of an MPSoC emulation system based on Leon3 cores following the MPPA framework. We also show how the MPPA framework and the emulator help the designers to identify performance problems and improve their MPSoC embedded system design.

The Web services technology has been emerged as a set of standards for publishing, discovering, and composing independent services in an open network. While the rapid development in wireless communication technologies is greatly changing the way people access and work with information. Mobile computing system based on Web services now supports advanced methods for application integration through distributed network computing environments. This paper presents an integration of wireless communication, wired communication and Web services technologies to implement a nutrition catering system of hospitals, in which patients can access to the servers and catering ordering functions through both desktop PCs and mobile devices such as Pads over a wired/wireless integrated local area network. To sure the security of the system, the secure Web service architecture and some security strategies to ensure mobile communication security are discussed. Web services-based wireless applications on mobile devices provide a means of convenience, improving efficiency and accuracy by saving time, reducing human errors, etc.

The Query-by-Humming (QBH) system allows users to retrieve songs by singing/humming. In this paper we propose a phrase-level piecewise linear scaling algorithm for melody match. Musical phrase boundaries are predicted for the query to split it to phrases. The boundaries of melody fragment corresponding to each phrase are allowed for adjusting in a limited scope. The algorithm employs Dynamic Programming and Recursive Alignment to search for the minimal piecewise matching cost upon Linear Scaling at phrase-level. Our experimental results on 5223 melody database show that the proposed algorithm outperforms traditional algorithms. The proposed algorithm gives significant improvements of 17.0%, 14.7% and 4.8% with respect to Linear Scaling, Dynamic Time Wrapping and Recursive Alignment in top-1 rate, respectively. The results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the previous algorithms.

Network management has been traditionally considered in the last stages of the design and development cycles of network technology. The typical modus operandi relies mostly on networkers that manually configure active elements, troubleshoot problems as they arise and reconfigure equipment accordingly. In fact, we note that several initiatives in the future Internet research area do not take proactive steps towards developing self-managing network architectures. This position paper presents the first steps taken towards adopting self-management from the initial design stages of Netlnf, an information-centric, clean-slate architecture for the future Internet, proposed by the 4WARD project. We introduce a preliminary set of guidelines on how to apply in-network management principles to Netlnf. Through scenarios, we examine the advantages of tightly integrating self-management functionality and network awareness with actual service delivery in Netlnf.

The integration of adequate information and communication technologies (ICT) in the right place and at the right time plays a determining role regarding language learning efficiency. The development of language competencies and the training and teaching of English for military purposes to officers, public officials and civil servants can be efficiently realized in organized forms partly by networking the already existing multimedia learning material for military English and by dynamic database extension. In the second semester of the academic year 2007/2008 an e-learning military English language teaching package was developed in the Moodle open source learning management system, implemented and used within the framework of a pilot project. This paper presents the concept of the MILES -military English learning system -, deals with the software components used for the implementation. Furthermore, this paper gives details of the course developments, the evaluation opportunities, it summarizes some experience of the project, analyzes the usability of the material as well as the learning habits of the end users.

Within the current economic context, enterprises are facing new interoperability issues due to increasing need of e Business Collaboration within the emerging digital ecosystems in which they belong. They also need to be able to keep in pace with their heterogeneous internal legacy systems, and can't change their infrastructure or applications for fast and short collaboration implying information and knowledge interchange. Current solutions are less and less adapted to face increasing needs and complexity. As proposing a new disruptive approach and technologies is inappropriate, the approach proposed by this paper is to build frameworks based on federation of existing eBusiness standards used by a given ecosystem, and allowing achieving "pragmatic" interoperability. This approach combines the advantage of using simultaneously Model Driven Engineering, Enterprise Modeling, Service Oriented Architecture and commodities on the WEB based on open and governed information and communication standards. It implies on facing important issues related to semantic preservation all along the lifecycle of the artifacts and infrastructures required to define and exploit an application. Such a need is addressed by the development of Extended Hypermodel concept, which is also introduced within this paper.

As its success has demonstrated, the principles of service-oriented architectures yield significant benefits for the integration, maintenance and administration of complex enterprise computing systems. However, they are primarily oriented towards the needs of server-side system integrators rather than the developers of client applications and business processes. In particular, the absence of the notion of types, in the sense of abstract data types and object-oriented programming, limits the way in which client and process developers can access resources in a service-oriented architecture and leverage reusable assets. This is additionally aggravated by the confusion surrounding the notion of state and the question of whether services should in general be stateful or stateless. In this paper we address these problems by introducing a client-oriented model of Web services in service-oriented development that provides a flexible notion of types and instances, and distinguishes between client-oriented and implementation-oriented notions of service state. We also introduce the concept of congregation as a new role in service-oriented development designed to support the new type model and discuss how it can be implemented in the light of the proposed state model using Web services as the underlying technology.

This paper presents a trajectory planning methodology for a mobile manipulator whose end-effector has to follow a predefined operational trajectory while considering obstacles in its environment. The robot is controlled by a multi-agent architecture that consists of six agents: Four agents are installed on an off-board PC and two others installed on the onboard PC of the robot. The validity of the methodology is demonstrated using the RobuTER/ULM mobile manipulator. The end-effector of the robot is asked to follow a straight-line while the non-holonomic differentially driven mobile base has to avoid obstacles in the environment. The end-effector of the robot is positioned at the preferred configuration progressively as the mobile base moves due to messages (current position coordinates and orientation angle of the mobile base, etc.) exchanged between the various agents of the control architecture.
