This paper presents a stereo based vision system which will be used to determine the stethoscope location on the human body in a cardiac auscultation tele-diagnostic system. The system is aimed at overcoming the problem of insufficient number of doctors comparing with the higher number of patients. The stereo vision system simulates human vision. The reconstruction of the point in three-dimensional space can be done by using the knowledge of camera calibration, image rectification, epipolar geometry, and disparity computation.

Power generation from renewable and sustainable sources is an important field of technology development owing to the increasing costs (both economically and environmentally) of fired generation. Most research associated with alternative forms of power generation have concentrated on relatively high efficiency systems, as this makes commercial realisation more readily achievable. A new research programme is taking a slightly different approach, where an inherently low efficiency power generation system based on low temperature differential Stirling engine technology is being considered. Here we describe the design of a low temperature differential Stirling engine for research into determining the commercial viability of utilising low enthalpy (or low grade) heat for electric power generation. While the design does not satisfy low cost economic requirements, through its ability to change important operational parameters such as compression ratio, piston phasing, and working gas movement dynamics, it is capable of identifying important features needed to optimise engine performance. The design utilises the Modified Beale Number and some preliminary software modelling, to satisfy the specifications of having a 500 W output with a temperature differential of only 40 K.

Up to now, there has been little academic support for the challenges of IT governance/IT management. As a reaction, various best practice frameworks - like COBIT (Control Objectives for IT and related technology) or CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) - were developed. Due to their origin, these frameworks lack of a sound basis or scientific foundation. To undertake a step in this direction, we propose the use of modeling notation and techniques to represent frameworks as conceptual metamodels. Accordingly, we present the well-known framework COBIT metamodeled in a conceptual way and, thereby, represent the underlying logically and semantically rich structures. We furthermore discuss the benefits of using conceptual metamodeling to analyze frameworks coming from practice. Using the metamodel, we are also able to demonstrate ways to improve the frameworks and configure them according to the specific needs of an enterprise or an industry. To have a sound basis for any improvement we discuss the process of metamodeling and derive some requirements for "good" metamodeling.

The dynamics of individual bacteria underlies the manifestation of complex multicellular behaviours such as biofilm development and colony expansion. High resolution movies of expanding bacterial colonies reveal intriguing patterns of cell motions. A quantitative understanding of the observed behaviour in relation to the bacteria's own motile apparatus and to hydrodynamic forces requires that bacteria be identified and tracked over time. This represents a demanding undertaking as their size is close to the diffraction limit; they are very close to each other; and a typical image may contain over a thousand cells. Here, we describe the approach that we have developed to segment individual bacteria and track them in high resolution phase contrast microscopy movies. We report that over 99% of non-overlapping bacteria could be segmented correctly using mathematical morphology, and we present preliminary results that exploit this new capability.

As we are aware that security environment for software system is changing constantly. Due to expanding connectivity and development of complex software systems risk management is posing serious challenges to the designers. This has become all the more difficult as the attackers are no longer random hackers. Their attacks are targeted, purposeful and organized to drive profit. In view of the increasing vulnerabilities and organized attacks by hackers, we are proposing a new approach to counter these new challenges. In our proposed approach named ldquothreat mitigation, monitoring and management planrdquo, we have incorporated important features to meet the security risks at the design level itself. As a first step we have adopted multi-layered defense strategy to make the attacker's job difficult. Furthermore actors have been associated to monitor the proactive strategy of mitigation. These actors will then manage the risk associated with the threat by taking appropriate actions. For better understanding, in our case study we have applied this new approach to mitigate, monitor and manage the threats to an online banking system.

The configuration of a power distribution system can be altered by changing the status of switches on the feeders. When a fault occurred on a distribution system feeder, the faulted section is isolated by opening the switches adjacent to the fault. When the fault is isolated, the system is reconfigured so the outage areas due to the fault can be re-energized. In this paper, a BDI (believe-desire-intension)-based multi-agent architecture is proposed. The agents can response to the changes of the environment and take necessary conversation with other agents to reach the final goal, supplying services to all de-energized customers. These agents act independently but co-operatively. Decision tree is used in the proposed agent architecture for making restoration plan. Decision trees are built during the restoration process based on the fault location and load conditions through communications between agents. By using the decision tree, a more robust decision can be achieved by agents. Simulation results show that the proposed BDI-based agent architecture is capable of proposing adequate restoration plan as expected.

This paper proposes an effective method for identifying functional modules of the weighted gene co-expression network using a minimum spanning tree (MST) approach coupled with network neighborhood connectivity. The MST-based gene co-expression network was reconstructed to serve as the backbone of gene co-expression network. Highly connected hub genes were identified based on the connectivity of the backbone network. All sub-networks were extracted by expanding from the hub genes to their neighborhood genes. Finally, functional modules were identified by integrating sub-networks with similar gene expression profiles. We tested the method with both simulated and autism spectrum disorder microarray data sets. The results show that our approach is better in highlighting the hub genes and can effectively identify functional modules with highly enriched pathways.

This paper presents a fast methodology for the estimation of informative cell features from densely clustered RGB tissue images. The features estimated include nuclei count, nuclei size distribution, nuclei eccentricity (roundness) distribution, nuclei closeness distribution and cluster size distribution. Our methodology is a three step technique. Firstly, we generate a binary nuclei mask from an RGB tissue image by color segmentation. Secondly, we segment nuclei clusters present in the binary mask into individual nuclei by concavity detection and ellipse fitting. Finally, we estimate informative features for every nuclei and their distribution for the complete image. The main focus of our work is the development of a fast and accurate nuclei cluster segmentation technique for densely clustered tissue images. We also developed a simple graphical user interface (GUI) for our application which requires minimal user interaction and can efficiently extract features from nuclei clusters, making it feasible for clinical applications (less than 2 minutes for a 1.9 megapixel tissue image).

The increase in autism prevalence has been the motivation for much research which has produced various theories for its causation. Genetic and environmental factors have been investigated. An area of focus is the affect of exposure to neurotoxins, such as mercury and lead, during critical stages in a childpsilas early development. In this study we apply Combinatorial Fusion Analysis (CFA) and Association Rule Mining (ARM) to autism prevalence, mercury, and lead data to generate hypotheses and explore possible associations.

Currently, most research and educational backbone networks consist of 10 G-bps network and some hosts connect to this backbone with 10-Gbps. When the hosts try to transfer data with high speed, network often experiences congestion at the backbone due to a confliction with commodity traffic. In such situations, queue size at the bottleneck point has an impact on the throughput performance of TCP data transfer. However, the importance of queue size has not often been well mentioned during design of real R & E network. Network devices with small queue size have sometimes been placed at the bottleneck point. If hosts transfer data over a long distance path and the network device with small queue becomes bottleneck, TCP cannot utilize the available bandwidth effectively. In particular, when running a single TCP stream, the impact of queue size at bottleneck point is significant. In this paper, we will show the impact of queue size at possible bottleneck point on TCP protocols over a 10G-bps network experimentally. The results of our experiments indicate that a network device with small queue size at a bottleneck point decrease the TCP throughput performance on a 10 Gbps long distance path. We confirmed similar results among several advanced TCP protocols.
