A product line is a family of products designed to take advantage of their common aspects (commonalities) and predicted variabilities. A product line may be software only, e.g., a family of GUIs; software + hardware, e.g., a family of televisions; or hardware only. Where software is a part of the product line, the variability accommodated by the product line is an economic decision and strongly affects the technology and the architecture used in the design and implementation of the product line. For example, where variability is narrowly bounded, a domain specific language may be used to define the product line and generate members of it, but the market for it may be relatively narrow. On the other hand, initial investment cost may be high, production cost very low, and time to market very short. Where variability is broadly bounded, a complex software architecture may be needed, production of products may be only semi-automated, time to market may increase, but market appeal may be much wider. Empirical studies, using baseline techniques, suggest that applying product line engineering produces a factor of three to five improvement in product development cost or product development speed. This talk will focus on the architectural considerations in defining and designing a product line, particularly questions such as "What are the attributes of a good software product line architecture?" and "How might a product line architecture change the economics of software development?", introducing an open market both in architecture and in software components. I will illustrate points with examples taken from Lucent Technologies and Avaya, from the Software Product Line Hall of Fame, from building architecture, and from other industries.

One of the critical success factors of event-driven systems is the capability of detecting complex events from simple and ordinary event notifications. Complex events which trigger or terminate actionable situations can be inferred from large event clouds or event streams based on their event instance sequence, their syntax and semantics. Using semantics of event algebra patterns defined on top of event instance sequences for event detection is one of the promising approaches for detection of complex events. The developments and successes in building standards and tools for semantic technologies such as declarative rules and ontologies are opening novel research and application areas in event processing. One of these promising application areas is semantic event processing. In this paper we contribute with a conceptual approach which supports the implementation of the vision of semantic event-driven systems; using Semantic Web technologies, benefiting from complex event processing, and ensuring quality through trust and reputation management. All of these novel technologies leads to more intelligent decision supporting systems.

The drastic development of the World Wide Web in the recent times has made the concept of Web crawling receive remarkable significance. The voluminous amounts of Web documents swarming the Web have posed huge challenges to the Web search engines making their results less relevant to the users. The presence of duplicate and near duplicate Web documents in abundance has created additional overheads for the search engines critically affecting their performance and quality. The detection of duplicate and near duplicate Web pages has long been recognized in Web crawling research community. It is an important requirement for search engines to provide users with the relevant results for their queries in the first page without duplicate and redundant results. In this paper, we have presented a novel and efficient approach for the detection of near duplicate Web pages in Web crawling. Detection of near duplicate Web pages is carried out ahead of storing the crawled Web pages in to repositories. At first, the keywords are extracted from the crawled pages and the similarity score between two pages is calculated based on the extracted keywords. The documents having similarity scores greater than a threshold value are considered as near duplicates. The detection has resulted in reduced memory for repositories and improved search engine quality.

Aiming at optimizing the use of a wireless sensor network (WSN) as a miniature components integrated on chip (according to SoC technology), the adoption of specific protocols in the fields of applications of such network type is crucial. WSNs differ largely from the traditional wireless networks, they consequently require the use of new variations of energy-preserving protocols to ensure a prolonged life span for a sensor and to allow autonomy for a mostly dynamic topology-characterized network. Indeed, several routing and medium access control (MAC) protocols were proposed, and often adapted to the targeted applicability (house automation, biology, security, rural...). In this paper, we put forward a layered model for WSNs, with reference to OSI, TCP/IP and IEEE802 models which guaranteed a simple design and an easy implementation, for computer networks on (LAN/Wi-LAN, WAN, PAN...), thanks to layer decomposition reducing complexity and outlining functionalities relating to layers/levels coordinating through specific interfaces. The suggested model defines the levels of abstraction features of a WSN nodes according to their types (sensor, base station ldquoBSrdquo...) and intelligence level so as to serve as a basic model for design and future implementations of WSNs protocols and applications. This layered model allows the interconnection of a WSN with any other type of computer network.

Ubiquitous computing enhances computer use by making many computers available throughout the physical environment, while making them effectively invisible to the user. Invisible devices and software are connected to one another to provide convenient services to users. In this environment, users want to get a variety of services by using only an individual mobile device which has limitations such as tiny display screens, limited input, and less powerful processors. In other words, users hope to obtain a personalized service composed of user-suitable devices among sharable devices in a ubiquitous smart space which is called USS in this paper. However, the situations of each user are different and user preferences also are various. Therefore, although users request the same service in the same USS, the most suitable devices for composing the service are different for all users. For satisfying these user requirements, this paper proposes a device recommender system which infers and recommends user-suitable devices for composing a user required service. The objective of this paper is the development of the systems for recommending devices through context-aware inference in peer-to-peer environments. For this goal, this paper considers the environmental context and user preference Also we implement a prototype system and test performance on real ubiquitous mobile object (UMO).

With the rapid development of computer simulation technology, the Radar simulation applications scale up increasingly. More and more Radar simulation applications adopt distributed structure to improve system performance and availability. Hence, how to enhance the robustness and efficiency of these complex distributed simulation systems is a hot point. We should balance the load for the applications to enhance the resource' s utility and increase the throughput. To overcome the problem, one effective way is to make use of load balancing. At the same time, load balancing middleware provides better scalability, response time and throughput. However, we must pay attention to the fact that the computing of the load should be adaptive and predicative to avoid the affection of the peak load. To the complex simulation applications, the peak means the system may suffer extremely high load for a short period while keeping stable load for a long time and some hosts of the system may be overloaded and the response time may be decreased for this kind of fluctuate. Therefore, to utilize the services effectively especially when the workloads fluctuate frequently, we should make the system react to the load fluctuate gradually and predictably. So we have proposed and implemented machine learning based load prediction and fuzzy logic based replica management for adaptive and flexible load balancing mechanism within the framework of distributed middleware.

Building information model (BIM) encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components; however, it does not include any information related to the functions that a building might require. On the other side, service-oriented computing emerged as a promising technology to enable fast, efficient software development. Even though features such as standard protocols, loosely coupled components, ontology-enabled dynamic discovery and composition of SOA seems a perfect fit for the building construction domain, the potential gain of applying SOA techniques has not really been discovered. In the paper, an ontology-based service composition framework for construction domain is proposed, and BIM is extended to include function requirements and service specifications. An example is shown to demonstrate the advantages over traditional techniques also.

IEC 61850 is a new international standard for the communication networks and systems in substation which allows the implementation of high-speed peer-to-peer communication based applications. The new standard has significant impact on the development in power system protection and provides a vehicle for future advances in many areas. All major substation protection and control equipment manufactures have been developing the new substation communication technology. At present, they can provide products which can support both IEC 61850 and conventional hard wired schemes. With the introduction of IEC 61850, those concepts generally associated with computer architectures have been introduced into the world of the power system equipment. These have immediate applications in new types of protection and are leading to a 'new' generation of relays. Communications is fundamental to these systems and enable new ideas to be realized which offer advantages for the protection world. This paper describes the impact of IEC 61850 on the design of the next generation of protection relays. It explains the operation of the different communications buses and how these are incorporated into the overall protection scheme. The paper also describes some of the alternative communication approaches that can be used to maximize the advantages to the protection system users and provide the features inherent to complex protection schemes. The acceptance and acceptability of these 'new' protections is the major challenge for the young power system protection engineers and the electricity supply industry as a whole.
