Information technology forms an important part of the healthcare solution. Accurate and up-to-date information is essential to continuous quality improvement in any organization, and particularly so in an area as complex as healthcare. Therefore, diverse information systems must be integrated across the healthcare enterprise. The knowledge base in the medical field is large, complex, and growing rapidly. It includes scientific knowledge, as well as familiarity with the day-to-day business of providing healthcare. It is crucial to identify the processes in the healthcare sector that would most benefit from the support of information technology. This study is focused on the analysis and design of comprehensive patient healthcare system (CPHS), which comprises two large subsystems, computerized patient record system (CPRS) and mobile computing clinical system (MCCS). It is anticipated that, this innovated system would not only serve as an application of state-of-the-art information and mobile computing technologies, but it would also provide clinical services at point of care in Saudi Arabia hospitals. Use of such technologies with highly efficient techniques for essential information gathering in a timely and cost effective manner in hospital sites is critical in order to understand how to enhance quality health care services to improve the life of patients and rapid decisions making. The design and development of CPHS would therefore pave the way for opening new venues in which such highly advanced information and mobile computing technologies are employed in the hospitals and other sectors beyond the field of medical care.

Based on systematic collection of the hydrogeological data of coal mine, we analyzed the factors affecting water inrush from coal floor and determined the major factors. We used the fuzzy clustering method to evaluate the water inrush risk from coal floor in order to solve the evaluating limitation of water inrush risk from coal floor by the water inrush coefficient method. The fuzzy clustering method gave a comprehensive consideration of many factors affecting water inrush from coal floor and it solved the problems of evaluating critical values by the water inrush coefficient method. To rapidly predict the water inrush risk from coal floor and improve the prediction accuracy, we developed the prediction software for water inrush risk from coal floor. On the theoretical basis of water inrush coefficient method and fuzzy clustering method, we used Visual Basic 6.0 design language as development platform, combining Access database and Matlab software, to develop prediction software, which had a zoning evaluation of water inrush risk. Take the Xinglongzhuang coal mine for example, the major factors affecting water inrush risk from coal floor were head pressure of Ordovician limestone aquifer, aquifuge thickness, geological structure and water abundance of Ordovician limestone aquifer. And we had a zoning evaluation of its water inrush risk. The evaluation results provide scientific basis for working out measures to prevent and control the water of Ordovician limestone aquifer to Xinglongzhuang coal mine. It also has important guiding significance to exploitation safety of coal mining. Because the prediction software has common applicability, it provides powerful support for rapidly correct evaluation of water inrush risk to other coal mines.

Summary form only given. In the 2006 report of the SEI international Process Research Consortium we identified nine driving forces which are shaping the need for research into software process and product. These were the increased push for value-add, business diversification, technology change, systems complexity, product quality, regulation, security and safety, and globalization. Four research themes were developed of which only one will be explored in this presentation. In the theme entitled "The relationships between processes and product qualities" the authors document some twenty six broad research questions which remain as challenges for the software engineering research community. This presentation outlines research carried out since 2006 which addresses some of these questions. In particular the presentation explores research into the meaning of software product quality, the performance quality prediction of heterogeneous systems of systems, and the relationships between defined software process and enacted process. Examples of conclusions which can be drawn are that our research should no longer benchmark development process productivity without consideration of product quality. In another example it shows that we will need to evaluate heterogeneous SOA architectures in the context of processes and workflows. In order to achieve significant progress it is argued that we need to pursue our research at a much deeper and inclusive level of understanding than often seen in the past in terms of process and process / product relationships.

3G networks provide access to network mobile users at multiple data rates. The lack of mobility support for mobile nodes, by the standard protocols originally developed to meet the requirements of stationary nodes in wired networks, implies that these standard protocols cannot be efficiently implemented in wireless networks. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) considers packet losses during Vertical Handover transition period as congestion and activates congestion control algorithm as a result thereby degrading throughput. This throughput degradation can be enhanced through improved TCP congestion window adjustment architecture. A proactive approach is presented in this paper wherein congestion window is adjusted according to the new network while handover process is being completed, avoiding slow starts during this process to eliminate the delay in window adjustment for enhanced throughput. Simulation of proposed scheme was carried out in NS-2. Throughput was calculated for proposed scheme during upward vertical handover and downward vertical handover scenarios. The results of proposed scheme were also compared with a split connection and an end-to-end connection approach. The comparative analysis of the results indicate a throughput enhancement of 22% and 17% as compared to split connection and end-to-end connection approach for upward vertical handover whereas throughput enhancement of 37% and 21% as compared to split connection approach and end-to-end connection approach for downward vertical handover is achieved.

A structured agile design approach to support customisation in wellness product development

The global market is evermore volatile and turbulent;it requires rapid responses to the emerging customers needs, also to unpredictable ones. Companies are forced towards a continuous research and innovation in terms of flexible technologies and processes in order to provide a high level of market adaptability. In this context, agile approaches, intended as a set of strategies to face the market variability, have to be investigated. They have to interest all processes related to the product development phase. This paper is focused on how to implement an efficient agile strategy in product design. The proposed approach is based on product modularity and on the integration of computer-aided design (CAD)-based tools to support feasibility analysis on virtual prototypes. It allows the concurrent management of possible changes in both product and process platforms by adopting virtual prototypes for performing simulations. The implemented platforms and the connected virtual prototype are structured according to modularity principles. The virtual prototype is defined as a collection of geometrical, functional, structural, manufacturing, environmental information, contained in the modules of the product and process platforms. An industrial example, belonging to the wellness production field (such as bathtubs and shower stalls), is described to validate the agile approach. It has been applied to solve a particularly meaningful problem: how to improve the bathtubs production process by reducing manufacturing and assembly costs while improving product customisability, eco-sustainability and quality. Once analysed, the context and the design constraints, in terms of cost, of environmental performance and, mainly, of aesthetic product features customisation, a new manufacturing process has been introduced based on the injection moulding technology instead of traditional thermoforming sheets.

This paper presents the main results of the systems development and integration activities performed by the MIDS nations (US, France, Italy, Spain and Germany), with the support of the MIDS international program office (IPO), in order to effectively integrate the MIDS low volume terminal (LVT) into air, ground and sea platforms. Particular emphasis is devoted to the experimental work performed in order to address integration issues, along with some of the systems engineering processes required to enhance the terminal hardware and software characteristics. Relevant platform integration lessons learned are also presented in the paper. Dissemination of lessons learned from the various integration and operational activities performed in the MIDS nations is now giving a much deeper insight into the Link 16 network enabled capabilities, with their real advantages and limitations. This sets the scene for further developments, including the definition of a common roadmap for the future MIDS-LVT upgrades and for the MIDS joint tactical radio system (JTRS) development activities currently ongoing. The second part of the paper provides an overview of the research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) activities currently ongoing or planned for the near future both in the MIDS-LVT and MIDS JTRS programs.

In this paper, a new Level-2-computer control system is developed for heat-furnace in plate steel heat treatment line. The process layout, Level-2-computer control system, network Structure for Level-2, software development environment, and some important calculation formulas for mathematical model for heat-furnace, have been represented, as well as the flow chart of main program for mathematical model. A large amount of operation data shows that the system is reliable, the efficiency of heat-furnace has been increased greatly, and a lot of energy has been saved. Such control system can also provide a lot of reliable real-time data for further on-line technology equipments. Moreover, a useful discovery for energy-saving emission reduction was made to develop advanced heat-furnace process control system.

This paper will report on a design and development project that aims to enrich face-to-face classroom contexts using the latest developments in information and communications technology. The Meety project, when used by students in a classroom with laptop computers, captures the verbal utterances of the classroom context and uses it to supply real-time information resources to the students in the classroom. Students have the option of contributing to the information resources and rating the utility of the resources supplied. This project discusses the design and development of the project as well as a simulated trial to test its efficacy.
