In this paper, we present a new method for classifying shot type in sports video based on visual attention. The problem is important for applications such as video structure analysis and content understanding. In particular, two-stage off-line learning processes perform knowledge extraction of semantic concepts and automatic shot classification, respectively. In the first stage, the extracted prominent regions are used as a good pattern in semantic concept level. Then a number of global features are defined as efficient input of the shot type classifier in the second stage. The identification of semantic concepts and classification of shot are based on human visual system. Hence, this framework can adequately capture the uncertainty or ambiguity of scales of a shot. Experimental results show the excellent performance of the approach.

development of Internet brings the great increasing communication requirement. This demand impels the developing progress of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). It is difficult to supply the high quality user experience for VoIP services, which has brought great challenges to VoIP developer because of the dynamic property of Internet. We obtain the following results in lots of existing VoIP systems: (1) many relay peer selections are suboptimal; (2) the waiting time to select a relay node can be quite long; (3) there are a large number of unnecessary probes, resulting in heavy network traffic. This paper presents a way called novel application-layer relay strategy (NARS) to solve relay problem and improve scalability. We introduce the mechanism in detail, and test our mechanism in NS2 network simulation environment and get a high relay node hit ratio result, which confirms the feasibility of NARS. Also we make a comparison with the other existing models.

In biorobotics research, engineers and biologists come together to implement the researcher's vision of the mechanisms driving a biological process in steel and silicon. Bionics has made a great progress and appeared all kinds of biologic design and application for robot. This paper describes the development of a mobile robot capable of negotiation such obstacles as electric power fitting, damper, anchor clamp, and torsion tower. The mobile robot suspends on overhead ground wires of 500KV power towers. Its ultimate purpose is to automate the inspection of power transmission line equipment. Biology principle of the movement of the monkey is taken as reference prototype to design and produce the inspection robot driven by 13 motor with two arms, two wheels, two wrists, two claws and a box. The inspection robot is designed to realize the function of observation, grasp, walk, rolling, turn, rise, and decline. An embedded computer based on PC/104 bus is chosen as the core of control system. A video capture card and thermal infrared camera are installed to obtain the temperature information of the power transmission lines, and the communication system between the robot and the ground station is based on wireless LAN TCP/IP protocol. An expert system programmed with Visual C++ is developed to implement the automatic control. A novel prototype with careful considerations on mobility was designed to inspect the 500KV power transmission lines. The new control algorithm of posture plan is proposed for obstacles cleaning in the torsion tower. Results of experiments demonstrate that the robot can be applied to execute the navigation and inspection tasks.

FPGA development tools can be complex, especially for users outside the digital design space. As a result of this complexity, industry is calling for software tools to increase efficiency of digital designers by abstracting the low-level details of FPGA programming. Most importantly, this process must close the growing gap between hardware and software design. New tools are emerging to help scientists and engineers use FPGAs without requiring the knowledge of low level hardware description languages (HDLs) or board layout. These domain expert users can use prior knowledge in software design or graphical approaches to create complex systems that include digital signal processing (DSP), direct memory access (DMA), digital communication protocols, and more all within an FPGA. With the ability to use C programming on the host and higher level tools for FPGA development on the target, software engineers can use FPGA technologies along with processors to run algorithms on the most efficient hardware target for test applications. This paper will cover examples of these tools and detail how higher-level abstraction, coupled with COTS hardware, can bring FPGA technology to new domains and users.

Measuring the thickness of articular cartilage in three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance (MR) images is an important diagnostic procedure. A 3D measuring method was proposed to determine the femoral cartilage thickness in this paper. The cartilage thickness was defined as the distance between the two sides of the edges,which are the zero-crossing points of the second directional derivatives combined with Gaussian blurring along the normal direction of the cartilage surface. The spherical constraint of the femoral shape was utilized to confirm the normal direction. The zero-crossing method was demonstrated by mathematical simulation. Experiments were conducted using a resected femoral head to validate the method. The anatomical thickness data were proved to be well correlated with the zero-crossing thickness data.
