Operating the Internet infrastructure in an energyefficient manner ("Green Internet") becomes a challenging issue in most recent years with the recognition of significant energy consumption due to its large scale. Yet a limited number of contributions are available to address the issue mainly through putting idle routers and links into sleep mode, at the price of low global resource utilization efficiency and degraded network performance. This paper follows the same line of research but investigates an optimal solution of configuring IP network topology to minimize the number of active routers and links, and hence energy consumption, whilst keep the interference on network operation minimal. An optimal energy-efficient network model along with a heuristic algorithm is proposed for identifying the network elements in sleep mode to attain approximately the best trade-off between the energy-efficiency and performance degradation. Numerical experiments are carried out to assess the solution for a range of network and load scenarios and the results clearly demonstrate its effectiveness.

The development of water resource allocation at home is analyzed and summarized in this paper. Based on the technology R&D programmer, domestic water resource allocation studies are divided into four phases: exploration, development, maturity and extension. In the first stage, optimal allocations of reservoirs were studied and the problems on the hydraulic engineering were solved. The second stage penetrated into river basin and region, and made further development by the combination of mathematical method and computertechnology. In the third stage, based on the concept of sustainable development, water resource allocation achieved the target of coordinated development of economy, society, resource and environment. In the fourth stage, research objects are extended to the generalized water resource, which includes artificial system water resources and ecosystem water resources. Finally, it puts forward rationalized suggestions on the basis of previous studies. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

In this paper, design and development of a peg placement robot for participating in National Engineering Robotics Contest (NERC) 2009 is presented. The robot needs to place the pre-loaded pegs in pigeon holes while navigating through a grid of white reflecting lines. The sensory system of the robot comprises of infrared sensors for line following and peg placement tasks. Twelve infrared sensors are mounted undercarriage the robot for navigation and one infrared sensor for controlling peg placement assembly. A position PI controller is designed using root locus technique for navigation of robot and implemented using AT89C52 microcontroller. Experimental results have shown the validity of the entire system.
