At our behest or otherwise, while our software is being executed, a huge variety of design assumptions is continuously matched with the truth of the current condition. While standards and tools exist to express and verify some of these assumptions, in practice most of them end up being either sifted off or hidden between the lines of our codes. Across the system layers, a complex and at times obscure web of assumptions determines the quality of the match of our software with its deployment platforms and run-time environments. Our position is that it becomes increasingly important being able to design software systems with architectural and structuring techniques that allow software to be decomposed to reduce its complexity, but without hiding in the process vital hypotheses and assumptions. In this paper we discuss this problem, introduce three potentially dangerous consequences of its denial, and propose three strategies to facilitate their treatment. Finally we propose our vision towards a new holistic approach to software development to overcome the shortcomings offered by fragmented views to the problem of assumption failures. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Fuel cell vehicles have been identified as the personal transportation technology of the future because of their high efficiency and very low emissions. To achieve the goal of road-ready fuel cell vehicles, great strides must be made in the development of fuel cells, hydrogen production and hydrogen storage technologies, that includes metal-H interaction studies and safety considerations. The interaction between two-hydrogen atoms and a gamma-Fe structure containing a vacancy has been studied using a cluster model and a theoretical method. For the study of the sequential absorption, the hydrogen atoms were positioned in their energy minima configurations, near the vacancy. The interactions mainly involve Fe 4s-H 1s atomic orbitals. The contribution of Fe 4p and Fe 3d orbitals is much less important. The Fe-Fe bond is weakened as new Fe-H-H and H-H pairs were formed. The effect of H atoms is limited to its first Fe neighbors. The Fe-Fe bond strength decreases with the introduction of the H atoms. Fe-H bonding is achieved at expense of weakening the metal-metal nearest bonds. There is not a real bond between the H atoms but some H-H interaction is observed. The detrimental effect of H atoms on the Fe-Fe bonds can be related to one of the aspect of embrittlement in gamma-Fe. (C) 2009 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Through research at the centre for biomedical engineering and physics (CMTF) seven new companies have been established in Northern Sweden. The activities have generated growth both in academia at the universities and in the industry in Northern Sweden. Cooperation was built up between the 23 research projects and more than 20 established companies in the field of biomedical engineering. A researcher-owned company for business development of the research results from the CMTF has been established, CMTF Business development Co Ltd, and has launched its first spin-off company in the autumn 2009. It has also increased the interest for commercial and entrepreneurship questions among the scientists in the centre. So far seven spin-off companies have resulted from the CMTF-research. © 2010 international Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering.

To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the approximately 1.6 million freight cars (wagons) in the North American railroad network, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requires periodic inspection of railcars to detect structural damage and defects. Railcar structural underframe components, including the centre sill, sidesills, and crossbearers, are subject to fatigue cracking due to periodic and/or cyclic loading during service and other forms of damage. The current railcar inspection process is time-consuming and relies heavily on the acuity, knowledge, skill, and endurance of qualified inspection personnel to detect these defects. Consequently, technologies are under development to automate critical inspection tasks to improve their efficiency and effectiveness. Research was conducted to determine the feasibility of inspecting railcar underframe components using machine vision technology. A digital video system was developed to record images of railcar underframes and computer software was developed to identify components and assess their condition. Tests of the image recording system were conducted at several railroad maintenance facilities. The images collected there were used to develop several types of machine vision algorithms to analyse images of railcar underframes and assess the condition of certain structural components. The results suggest that machine vision technology, in conjunction with other automated systems and preventive maintenance strategies, has the potential to provide comprehensive and objective information pertaining to railcar underframe component condition, thereby improving utilization of inspection and repair resources and increasing safety and network efficiency.

Prediction and monitoring of the telephone traffic concerned by the telecom operators to predict accurately and reliability of the results directly affect the effectiveness and long-term development of enterprises. Based on the time series type of telephone traffic data for its small term, and characteristics of the trend increasing, for this reason this paper use grey model GM(1,1). The telephone traffic itself has less volatility and a strong seasonal characteristics, this paper presents a new prediction model, combined grey forecast model. The model combined the longitudinal and horizontal data of the projected trend of the data to achieve short-term forecasting and seasonal prediction of binding targets, and thus improve the prediction accuracy. At the same time by the introduction of particle swarm optimizer(PSO) to improve the grey forecast model to compare with the Season Exponent and Grey Forecast method. This paper picked a province of China from 2004 to 2009 the monthly telephone traffic data, through different angles using grey model GM(1,1) to predict and compare the predicted results, the experiment can see the improved grey prediction model have more accurately predict the future telephone traffic. © 2010 IEEE.

This research was to develop the online lesson through Synectics activities to enhance creative thinking for undergraduate students. The objectives were 1) to develop the online lesson by using Synectics Activities to Enhance Creative Thinking for Undergraduate Students, 2) to evaluate the quality of the developed online lesson, 3) to determine the creative thinking of the learners who learned from the developed online lesson, and 4) to evaluate the satisfaction of the learners towards the developed online lesson. The result from the quality evaluation for the online lesson by using Synectics Activities to Enhance Creative Thinking for Undergraduate Students" by 3 experts in contents and 3 experts in media (6 experts in total) showed that the quality of the developed online lesson in terms of contents and media was 3.63 and 4.36, respectively, or at good level. The developed online lesson was then tested with the sampling group of 30 first-year undergraduate students in the second semester of the academic year 2009 chosen through simple random sampling method, namely drawing lots out of the students in the Department of Educational Communication and technology, Faculty of Industrial Education and technology, King Mongkut's University of technology Thonburi. The test result showed that the average score for creative thinking after the treatment was higher than the one before the treatment. This means that the learners had higher creative thinking than before learning. The result from the evaluation of the sampling group satisfaction was 4.41. It means the satisfaction was at high level. It could be concluded that the online lesson by "Synectics Activities to Enhance Creative Thinking for Undergraduate Students" could be used for the instruction and the development of creative thinking. © 2010 IADIS.

Student engagement is a pervasive and persistent goal for educators. In previous work we have reported that activities like public real-time commenting on videos can enhance student participation and engagement [4]. However, these events occur over a limited period of time. Thus a more challenging question is how to increase and sustain student engagement. In this paper we describe the iterative development of ClassCommons, a public commenting system with which students can post questions/comments that are shared through a public display in the classroom. The system was used in a senior undergraduate class in the spring semester of 2009. Our findings suggest that students were interested in this system. Students with different self-construal (independent vs. interdependent) appropriate this system for slightly different purposes. In the long run, we speculate that by having the teacher involved more in using this system (responding more quickly, helping structuring the discussions), it has potential for promoting sustained student engagement. © 2010 IEEE.

One solution for increasing the use of renewables is to find new strategies to promote the connection of distributed energy resources (DERs) within the existing power system. A solution that allows a flexible integration of dispersed generation (DG) into energy networks is the use of dc at the user layer. This seems a reasonable choice since several renewable sources and the presently available storage systems deliver electricity in dc form (e.g., fuel cells and solar cells). Furthermore, other generators (wind turbines and microhydro or microgas turbines) deliver electricity in ac form but mostly at variable or nonstandard frequencies. Consequently, the output of these generators must be rectified, converted again into ac, and conditioned to meet the nominal grid parameters. Anticipating the extensive use of low-power DC-based intelligent devices, one can avoid losses in energy transfer by using a dc layer within the distribution networks, at least where the energy is produced in dc form. DC grids in buildings are expected to be one of the main applications and challenges in the future. The development of a dc test network, including measurement and communication, is presented in this paper. The development of promising applications showing the effective integration of DG into intelligent networks with low-power loads is illustrated and discussed. Specific indicators are formulated to characterize power quality issues of dc systems. © 2006 IEEE.

Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, a discrete structure representation of SN P systems with extended rules and without delay is proposed. Specifically, matrices are used to represent SN P systems. In order to represent the computations of SN P systems by matrices, configuration vectors are defined to monitor the number of spikes in each neuron at any given configuration;transition net gain vectors are also introduced to quantify the total amount of spikes consumed and produced after the chosen rules are applied. Nondeterminism of the systems is assured by a set of spiking transition vectors that could be used at any given time during the computation. With such matrix representation, it is quite convenient to determine the next configuration from a given configuration, since it involves only multiplication and addition of matrices after deciding the spiking transition vector. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) development paradigm has emerged to improve the critical issues of creating, modifying and extending solutions for business processes integration, incorporating process automation and automated exchange of information between organizations. Web services technology follows the SOA's principles for developing and deploying applications. Besides, Web services are considered as the platform for SOA, for both intra- and inter-enterprise communication. However, an SOA does not incorporate information about occurring events into business processes, which are the main features of supply chain management. These events and information delivery are addressed in an Event-Driven Architecture (EDA). Taking this into account, we propose a middleware-oriented integrated architecture that offers a brokering service for the procurement of products in a Supply Chain Management (SCM) scenario. As salient contributions, our system provides a hybrid architecture combining features of both SOA and EDA and a set of mechanisms for business processes pattern management, monitoring based on UML sequence diagrams, Web services-based management, event publish/subscription and reliable messaging service. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
