Modeling of complex systems typically requires many iterations of theoretical design, numerical simulation, and analysis. The goal of this project was to develop an automated optimization framework to optimize a 0.22 THz traveling wave tube (TWT) high-power amplifier design. Applications for such an amplifier include three-dimensional (3D) imaging systems for medical uses, detection of concealed hazardous materials, and high-bandwidth communications. An optimization framework was developed for the dod Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) environment to automatically queue and track many simultaneous thousand CPU hour jobs. Results were automatically evaluated, collated, and used to refine simulations, thus saving many man-hours otherwise used for performing parameter scans and analysis. Prior efforts typically required thousands of manually submitted jobs over the course of three years, and resulted in a design that did not meet the desired specifications, e.g., the electron-gun (e-gun) component produced a noisy 4.4 mA, 150 μm diameter electron beam which fed into a 13 dB amplifier that exhibited detrimental backwards-wave oscillations. The automated effort produced thousands of runs over a month and met the design goals with an e-gun providing a low-noise, 10 mA, 100 m diameter electron beam feeding into a 21 dB amplifier with no backwards-wave oscillations. The work presented here involved thousands of runs consuming around 3.8 million CPU hours. Hence, the near-exclusive access provided by the Capabilities Application Project was critical for the success of this *** efforts typically required thousands of manually submitted jobs over the course of three years, and resulted in a design that did not meet the desired specifications, e.g., the electron-gun (e-gun) component produced a noisy 4.4 mA, 150 m diameter electron beam which fed into a 13 dB amplifier that exhibited detrimental backwards-wave oscillations. The principal objective of this work is to implement a new material development paradigm using atomistic simulations to guide the molecular design of materials. Traditional empirical macroscopic material development studies omit the fundamental insight needed to understand material behavior at the atomic and molecular levels where material response begins. The new paradigm relies heavily on a tight integration between simulation and experimental efforts to design and process new materials with nanometer-scale precision. Exploiting nanotechnology requires atomic-molecular-level material design and the ability to process these materials with atomic-molecular-level precision. Processing materials with nanoscale precision poses formidable theoretical, computational, and experimental challenges to developing advanced materials. high performance computers and advanced physics-based simulations can complement experimental efforts to design, test, synthesize, and analyze novel materials and innovative structural designs. This method can be applied to a wide range of material designs. As a proof of concept, we began our work on the design of novel carbon nanotube-based materials. The mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes such as low-density, high-stiffness, and exceptional strength make them ideal candidates for reinforcement material in a wide range of high performance composites. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to predict the tensile response of fibers composed of aligned carbon nanotubes with intermolecular bonds of interstitial carbon atoms. The effects of bond density and carbon nanotube length distribution on fiber strength and stiffness are investigated. Results indicate that including cross link atoms between the carbon nanotubes in the strands significantly increases the load transfer between the carbon nanotubes and prevents them from slipping. This increases the elastic modulus and yield strength of the fibers by an order-of-magnitude. Carbon nanotube-

Using a set of interleaved unitary collision-stream operators, a three-dimensional (3D) quantum lattice gas algorithm is devised which, on taking moments, recovers the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. If a zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is trapped in an a magnetic well, the evolution of the ground-state wave function satisfies the scalar GP equation, while if the BEC is trapped in an optical trap the ground-state wave function satisfies spin or GP equations. Quantum turbulence is studied in a scalar GP system on 5,7603 grid yielding not only the classical Kolmogorov k -5/3 cascade but also the quantum vortex k-3 spectrum. For a certain class of initial conditions, one finds an intermittent loss of tangled quantum vortices as the vortex cores attain minimal size, and thus prevent the Kelvin wave cascade (due to helical wave-wave coupling on the vortex). A coupled set of GP equations are solved for spin or BEC. Skrymions, which describe topologically-linked quantum vortices, are examined. One finds, for certain initial conditions that the incompressible kinetic energy spectrum for the condensate component of a vortex ring core rapidly departs from the k-3 linear quantum vortex spectrum. © 2011 IEEE.

high performance reconfigurable computers (HPRCs), which combine general-purpose processors (GPPs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), are now commercially available. These interesting architectures allow for the creation of reconfigurable processors. HPRCs have already been used to accelerate integer and fixed-point applications. However, extensive parallelism and deeply pipelined floating-point cores are necessary to make MHz-scale FPGAs competitive with GHz-scale GPPs, thus making it difficult to accelerate certain kinds of floating-point kernels. Kernels with variable length nested loops, e.g., sparse matrix-vector multiply, have been problematic because of the loop-carried dependence associated with the pipelined floating-point units. While hardware description language (HDL)-based kernels have shown moderate success in addressing this problem, the use of a high-level language (HLL)-based approach to accelerate such applications has been rather elusive. If HPRCs are to become a part of mainstream military and scientific computing, we should emphasize the use of HLL-based programming, whenever possible, rather than HDL-based hardware design. The primary reason is the increased programmer productivity associated with HLLs when compared with HDLs. For example, the floating-point addition statement z = x+y, a single line in an HLL, corresponds to hundreds of lines of HDL. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a sparse matrix Jacobi processor to solve systems of linear equations, Ax=b. The parallelized, deeply pipelined, IEEE-754-compliant 32-bit floating-point sparse matrix Jacobi iterative solver runs on a contemporary HPRC. The FPGA-based components are implemented using only an HLL (the C programming language) and the Carte HLL-to-HDL compiler. Time-to-solution and scalability of an application can vary greatly from one computer architecture to another. It is important then to consider the appropriateness of architectures with respect to applications to make the most efficient use of available resources. However, because of the wide range of applications currently in use within the community and the large number of systems managed by the high performance computing modernization program (hpcmp), determining the most appropriate systems for each application can be difficult. This paper, therefore, focuses solely on codes within the hpcmp Technology Insertion 2010 (TI-10) Applications Benchmarking Suite. These codes include AMR, AVUS, CTH, GAMESS, HYCOM, ICEPIC, and LAMMPS. This paper evaluates the parallel performance per processor of each of the seven TI-10 codes on current hpcmp architectures and determines the architectures on which each application runs most efficiently. This, along with added analysis of application and system features, can be helpful in guiding users and developers in selecting appropriate architectures for their codes.

The sustained systems performance (SSP) test has been implemented on certain high performance computing modernization program (hpcmp) HPC systems in order to quantitatively evaluate updates to system software, hardware repairs, job queuing policy modifications, and revisions to the job scheduler as necessary. The test employs codes used in the system acquisition cycle with proven migration capability to hpcmp HPC systems and non-empirical tests for numerical accuracy. Metrics such as compilation time, queue wait time, benchmark execution time, and total test throughput time are gathered and compared against metric data from previous tests to monitor the systems under test while minimizing impact to the users. Jobs failing to execute properly or in anomalously short or long times are investigated, and the results are reported to system administrators and center directors at each center for appropriate actions. During the past year, the SSP test has been instrumental in surfacing configuration issues with the PBS scheduler and performance issues on several HPC systems. Additionally, the frequency of the SSP test on systems procured in Technology Insertion 2009 (TI-09) and thereafter has increased, with attendant changes in the test cases comprising the test. The SSP test continues to play an important role in monitoring the quality of service delivering HPC to hpcmp users at the system, dod Supercomputing Resource Center, and vendor levels.

Machine affinity is the observed phenomena that some applications benefit more than others from features of high performance computing (HPC) architectures. When considering a diverse portfolio of HPC machines manufactured by different vendors and of different ages, such as the set of all supercomputers currently operated by the Department of Defense high performance computing modernization program, it should be obvious that some run a given application faster than others do. Therefore, almost every user would request to run on the fastest machines. But an important insight is that some applications benefit more from the features of the faster machines than others do. If allocations are done in such a way that applications that benefit the most from the features of the fastest machines are assigned to those machines then overall throughput across all machines is boosted by more than 10%. We exhibit exemplary empirical analysis and provide a simple algorithm for doing allocations based on machine affinity. The net effect is like adding a new $10M supercomputer to the portfolio without paying for it.

The US Air Force SEEK EAGLE Office (AFSEO) and the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) submitted a joint proposal to the high performance computing modernization program (hpcmp) for a Dedicated HPC Project Investments (DHPI) Project to support Aircraft/Store Compatibility, Certification, and Clearance beginning in FY09. As a result, the SGI ICE 8200 cluster was installed at AEDC in May 2009. Both AFSEO and AEDC have ported software with the latest monthly utilization topping 80%. Applications include time-accurate store separation simulations, modeling of facilities used for store separation testing, and investigation of the flow in the vicinity of flight test instrumentation. The hardware is also supporting the development of the next-generation software for fixed-wing store separation simulations as part of the Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environment-Air Vehicle (CREATE-AV) program and the Institute for HPC Air Armament Applications. This DHPI increases the combat capability, and reduces the acquisition cost and risk for current and future weapons systems of multiple services and agencies by providing time-critical numerical solutions in conjunction with US Air Force testing.

The Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments (CREATE) program was established as a new 12-year program in FY 2008 by the Department of Defense (dod). The CREATE goal is to enable major improvements in dod's acquisition engineering design and analysis processes by developing and deploying scalable, multi-disciplinary, physics-based computational engineering software products for the design and analysis of dod Ships, Air Vehicles, and Radio Frequency Antennas. Meshing and Geometry (MG) generation is being provided by a fourth project, MG. CREATE is a multi-institutional, multi-service, multi-agency and multi-disciplinary program with participation by the Navy, Air Force, Army, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, industry, and academia. The CREATE products are being developed and released on an annual cycle. In 2010, the program released five new products: SENTRI 1.0 - RF antenna design; NESM 0.1 - Ship Shock Analysis; IHDE 1.0 - Ship Hydrodynamic Design and Analysis; Kestrel 1.0 - Fixed-wing air vehicle analysis; and Helios 1.0 -- Rotorcraft analysis. Enhanced versions of these products will be released every year starting in 2011. In 2011, five additional products will begin annual releases: DaVinci - a tool for the rapid physics-based design of air vehicles; RDI - an integrated suite of tools to enable rapid physics-based design of naval ships; Firebolt - components to provide models for gas turbine propulsion systems for Kestrel and Helios; NavyFoam - a high- fidelity hydrodynamics analysis tool for predicting drag and resistance, sea-keeping and seaway loads; and Capstone - components to enable the generation of geometries and meshes for all of the other products. The CREATE products are designed to be modular, maintainable, extensible, and scalable.
