The countermine test bed (CTB) and accompanying tools provide a means to optimize thermal infrared sensor systems and automated target recognition algorithms. The CTB has been validated through a series of studies conducted since 2006. During that time, the capability of the CTB has been vastly expanded, particularly in regards to the size of the domain that can be modeled. The CTB consists of four independent models that are coupled through file transfers. Optimization of the system involves a scheduling problem whereby the processors are assigned to individual sub-models in accordance with their run times. The ground model and the ray caster dominate computations, with the other sub-models operating virtually as background processes.

Compressors for modern gas turbine engines are challenging to simulate. Disparate length and time scales exist in an aggressive adverse pressure gradient environment amongst a wide array of physical phenomena requiring refinement in both space and time. The resulting mesh sizes and CPU time required to complete time-accurate simulations have become staggering, though they will only continue to increase as the simulation strategy switches from Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) to Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES). For the complex compressor flows, this transition has long been necessary. In order to more effectively simulate compressor flows, several tool developments have taken place, which result in better process and reduced engineer effort. Utilizing the Air Force Research Laboratory Department of Defense (dod) Supercomputing Resource Center (AFRL DSRC) at Wright-Patterson AFB, improvements in geometry handling, grid generation methodologies, and solver features have reduced workload while benefiting simulation quality. Available applications such as Doxygen, Python, VTK, and Subversion created a productive collaboration environment suitable for both development and testing.

A team of researchers at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, NY is building a remote test facility for developing a radio frequency (RF) tomography imaging capability. While at the test site and via batch reservations, they plan on employing the Army Research Laboratory Department of Defense Supercomputer Resource Center MJM distributed memory architecture system, while conducting operations at the test site. We present a scalability study of example RF tomography code, written in the M language of MATLAB and parallelized via Star-P, on the MJM system. The team can use the study to help guide operations while at the remote test facility. We are not attempting to show that the RF tomography code scales well;indeed, it suffers from communication bottlenecks in parts of the algorithms. Nonetheless, this is the code the team uses and, for planning purposes, the team needs to know how long it takes to produce images of a given size for a given number of processors with the existing algorithms. © 2010 IEEE.

Parallel codes with large-stride/irregular-stride (L/I) memory access patterns, e.g., sparse matrix and linked list codes, often perform poorly on mainstream clusters because of the general purpose processor (GPP) memory hierarchy. high performance reconfigurable computers (HPRCs) are parallel computing clusters containing multiple GPPs and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) connected via a high-speed network. In this research, simple 64-bit floating-point parallel codes are used to illustrate the performance impact of L/I memory accesses in software (SW) and FPGA-augmented (FA) codes and to assess the benefits of mapping L/I-type codes onto HPRCs. The experiments reveal that large-stride SW codes, particularly those involving data reuse, experience severe performance degradation compared with unit-stride SW codes. In contrast, large-stride FA codes experience minimal degradation compared with unit-stride FA codes. More importantly, for codes that involve data reuse, the experiments demonstrate performance improvements of up to nearly tenfold for large-stride FA codes compared with large-stride SW codes.

Recent advances in theoretical methods combined with the advent of massively-parallel supercomputers allow one to reliably simulate the properties of complex materials and device structures from first principles. We describe applications in two general areas: (i) novel ferroelectric oxide-polymer composites for ultrahigh power density capacitors, necessary for pulsed power applications, such as electric discharges, power conditioning, and dense electronic circuitry, and (ii) electron transport properties of ballistic, multi-terminal molecular devices, which could form the basis for ultraspeed electronics and spintronics. For capacitor materials, we investigate the dielectric properties of PbTiO3 slabs and polypropylene/PbTiO 3 nanocomposites. We evaluate both the optical and static local dielectric permittivity profiles for isolated PbTiO3 slabs and across the polypropylene/PbTiO3 interface. For thin ferroelectric slabs, we find that in order to maintain the ferroelectric structure, it is necessary to introduce compensating surface charges. Our results show that: (i) the surface-and interface-induced modifications to dielectric permittivity in polymer/metal-oxide composites are localized to only a few atomic layers;(ii) the interface effects are mainly confined to the metal-oxide side;and (iii) metal-oxide particles larger than a few nanometers retain the average macroscopic value of bulk dielectric permittivity. Turning to nanoelectronic devices, we investigate ballistic electron transport through a paradigmatic four-terminal molecular electronic device. In contrast to a conventional two-terminal setup, the same organic molecule placed between four electrodes exhibits new properties, such as a pronounced negative differential resistance. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper documents a new integrating product that allows cross-over between simulation of aerodynamics, dynamic stability and control, structures, propulsion, and store separation. The Kestrel software product is an integrating product written in modular form with a Python infrastructure to allow growth to additional capabilities as needed. Computational efficiency will also be improved by targeting the next generation peta-flop architectures envisioned for the 2010+ timeframe. Kestrel is also targeted to the need of simulating multidisciplinary physics, such as fluid-structure interactions, inclusion of propulsion effects, moving control surfaces, and coupled flight control systems. The Kestrel software product is to address these needs for fixed-wing aircraft in flight regimes ranging from subsonic through supersonic flight, including maneuvers, multi-aircraft configurations, and operational conditions. Preliminary results of the F-16C with comparison to experiments are provided. Parallel scalability analysis of the initial version of Kestrel is also presented.

The inherent complexity in utilizing and programming high performance computing (HPC) systems is the main obstacle to widespread exploitation of HPC resources and technologies in the Department of Defense (dod). Consequently, there is the persistent need to simplify the interface for the generic user. This need is particularly acute in the Signal/Image Processing (SIP), Integrated Modeling and Test Environments (IMT), and related dod communities where typical users have heterogeneous unconsolidated needs. Typically, in these communities, most users work/from a Windows PC and just the overhead involved in learning UNIX well enough to accomplish HPC tasks is itself a significant barrier. Virtualization is a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. In this proof-of-concept study we report on our experience with SIP applications running on top of a virtual Windows platform -guest OS- that itself runs on top of high performance computing modernization program (hpcmp) HPC platforms running Linux -host OS-. Productivity is strongly influenced by the workflow of the user (e.g., time spent running vs. time spent programming). Therefore, we study performance and productivity aspects of this novel approach using the realistic and prototypical SIP algorithms embedded in the DARPA's high Productivity computing Systems (HPCS) Challenge Scalable Synthetic Compact Application Benchmark # 3 (SSCA # 3). SSCA # 3 is also part of the high performance Embedded computing (HPEC) benchmark challenge and contains sensor processing (SA R) and knowledge formation (ATR) algorithms. Our conclusion is that virtualization technology is a promising approach to preserve desktop PC user productivity while, transparently, allowing the exploitation of HPC systems. The quantum chemistry package General Atomic and Molecular Electronic Structure System (GAMESS) is employed in the first.-principles modeling of complex molecular systems by using the density functional theory (DFT) as well as a number of other post-Hartree-Fock (HF) methods. Both DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) are of particular interest to the Department Of Defense (dod) Computational Biology, Chemistry, and Materials Science (CCM). Millions of CPU hours per year are expended by GAMESS calculations on dod high performance computing (HPC) systems. Therefore, any reduction in wall-clock time for these calculations will represent a significant saving in CPU hours. As part of this work, three areas for improvement were identified: 1) replacement of the exchange-correlation (XC) integration grid, 2) TDDFT parallelization, and 3) profiling and optimization of the DFT and TDDFT We summarize the work performed in these task areas and present the resulting speed-up. Our software enhancements are available to the general public in the 11APR2008R1 version of GAMESS.
