A new pub/sub/query (PSQ) paradigm has been developed for the information management of high performance computers. The main advantage of PSQ over Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the ability to adapt to dynamically changing requirements. Information management for high performance computing (HPC) applications also coordinates the distribution of data across processing nodes, both for initial data and for intermediate results distribution. Additionally, PSQ exhibits enhanced robustness. A matrix multiplication case study illustrates the advantages of the PSQ software development approach.

The United States Army is continuously improving upon its situational awareness in all operational environments. To extend the usefulness of seismic sensors to urban environments, we first need to understand the scattering of seismic waves by shallow foundations. Our objective is to use three-dimensional, high performance computations to characterize this scattering at fairly low propagation frequencies. The results include an h-(mesh size) and p-(element order interpolation) refinement wave-field measures of constructive and study, and destructive interference (scattering) at low frequencies for an urban model that includes typical shallow foundations. The interference measures demonstrate the ability of the code STARS3D to quantify seismic scattering from urban structures. We conclude that shallow building foundations do impact seismic wave propagation in urban environment.

The free ride of increasing computing performance by constantly increasing processor frequency is coming to an end. The laws of physics combined with economic forces from the consumer electronics industry have created a revolution in computing which is now clearly headed toward "more" instead of 'faster" processors. At the US Army Research Laboratory we have established a significant effort which is tasked with finding ways to take advantage of multi-core CPUs, Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), Cell Processors, and Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for both traditional physics-based simulations. and real-time battlefield applications. Each of these technologies has various strengths and drawbacks. Our goal is to combine the asymmetric capabilities of the various cores into a complete high performance system. In this paper, we discuss the Asymmetric Core computing (ACC) Laboratory which we have established along with some of the software tools and applications we are developing.

Specialized secondary processing units, such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and graphics processing units (GPUs), attempt to tackle the time-consuming applications containing high computational requirements. In order to achieve acceleration, FPGAs allow a customizable architecture and Nvidia GPUs offer up to 16 cores with 128 stream processors. The following research presents the experiences of designing integer and floating-point based algorithms for Xilinx FPGAs and programming on NVIDIA graphics card. For test case applications, an encryption function and a sorting algorithm were investigated. The implementation of an encryption algorithm depicts the performance results of an integer application composed of bit operations and a simple sort algorithm tests the effects of a floating-point application containing large numbers of multiple independent sorting instructions.

The Optical Physics Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory conducts research to develop advanced Biological Warfare (BW) detection capabilities for the real-time autonomous classification of individual aerosol particles. This paper describes the porting of their MATLAB design code running on a non-networked collection of PC Window computers to code that runs under OCTAVE (an Open Source software package that allows a user to run MATLAB programs) on a collection of processors on a high performance computing system. The new code offers the potential for reducing the The new code of turnaround time for a single run from 40 hours to 35 minutes.

The complexity of parallel computing is daunting for new users and a productivity bottleneck for even experienced users. Furthermore, most users work from a Windows PC environment so that the overhead involved in learning Unix well enough to accomplish parallel programming tasks is itself a further obstruction to efficient productivity. What is needed is a smooth work flow that simplifies both the programming task and the remote execution management. VISION is a freely available, python-based, drag-and-drop visual-programming environment that reduces sophisticated programming tasks to drawing interactive flowcharts encapsulating the underlying programming complexity. Such flowcharts are built by dropping and connecting computational boxes on a flowchart instead of writing code. This is an important issue for productivity since productivity is dominated by the workflow of the user (e.g., time spent running versus time spent programming). As a python-based package, it is possible to embed parallel computing features from iPython into VISION to enable both visual programming as, well as parallel execution on remote high performance computers. This paper discusses the prototype we built at SPA WAR Systems Center, San Diego for a visual parallel programming workflow based on VISION and iPython, for parallel computing using a Linux cluster as a backend, and a Windows XP workstation as the front-end running VISION.

Computational science and engineering (CSE) and high performance computing (HPC) have now become an integral part of several engineering and science disciplines with still a very small participation from minority and under-represented population. To attract minorities to these critical technical areas and to the field of CSE and HPC, we have followed a complimentary approach by exposing and training the faculty from several under-represented and minority universities in the areas of CSE and HPC through a one-week workshop sponsored by Department of Defense high performance computing modernization Office program Outreach and JEOM (Joint Educational Opportunities for Minorities) conducted at the campus of North Carolina A&T State University with a strong computational science and engineering graduate program. This workshop enabled the participant faculty from under-represented and minority serving institutions who are generally involved with minority undergraduate students to be educated and exposed the various aspects of the CSE and HPC techniques and opportunities in these areas. This paper highlights the development of this educating the educator workshop on computational science and engineering and high performance computing for the past 2 years (2006 and 2007);the experiences and feedback from the participating minority university and the impact on expanding CSE and HPC education outreach to the community of faculty and students at the under-represented and minority serving institutions. This educating the educator, workshop has enabled the participating faculty to not only get trained and exposed in these areas but also act as a catalyst to propagate their knowledge to their students, serving a larger minority population and future work force needs of qualified minorities in these critical areas.

The excellent mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), such as low density, high stiffness, and great strength make them ideal candidates for reinforcement material in a wide range of high performance materials applications. The strength-to-weight ratio of CNT fibers are anticipated to exceed any materials currently available, yet theoretical calculations indicate that they still do not take full advantage of the superior mechanical properties of the constituent CNTs. The maximum theoretical strength of CNT fibers is obtained when the shear force is equal to the intrinsic breaking strength of the constituent CNTs. Load transfer is an important factor in determining the mechanical properties of the fibers. In this paper, quenched molecular dynamics is used to study the CNT-CNT interactions in a bundle of CNTs under strain. The bundles consist of parallel (5, 5) CNTs arranged in a hexagonal closest packed (HCP) configuration with one central CNT surrounded by six CNTs on its perimeter. The simulations explore the evolution of load transfer and local strain for slipping between CNTs during the extraction of a single CNT from a bundle. The results provide insight into the role contact length plays in determining the shear stress, yield stress, and contact length needed to achieve maximum fiber strength.

This paper summarizes the efforts carried out over the last three years for the prediction of high-speed sealift (HSSL) ships. Semi-planing monohulls, catamarans, trimarans, and small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) concepts are some of the hull forms that were considered. Propulsor options for these configurations varied from traditional propellers mounted on shafts and struts to waterjet propulsion systems. Computational tools are needed to predict the hydrodynamics of these multihull configurations for their proper design and analysis in many areas including resistance and powering, maneuvering and seakeeping. The focus of the present effort is to use an Unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver, CFDShip-Iowa, to predict the flow fields. Many of these predictions are very computationally, intensive and thus require high performance computing resources. This paper will discuss the progress made in the overall effort along with some of the validations performed.

PVTOL provides an object-oriented C++ API that hides the complexity of multicore architectures within a PGAS programming model, improving programmer productivity. Tasks and conduits enable data flow patterns such as pipelining and round-robining. Hierarchical maps concisely describe how to allocate hierarchical arrays across processor and memory hierarchies and provide a simple API for moving data across these hierarchies. Functors encapsulate computational kernels;new functors can be easily developed using the PVTOL API and can be fused for more efficient computation. Existing computation and communication technologies that are optimized for various architectures are used to achieve high performance. PVTOL abstracts the details of the underlying processor architectures to provide portability. We are actively developing PVTOL for Intel, PowerPC and Cell architectures and intend to add support for more computational kernels on these architectures. FPGAs are becoming popular for accelerating computation in both the high performance computing (HPC) and high performance embedded computing (HPEC) communities. Integrated processor-FPGA technologies are now available from both HPC and HPEC vendors, e.g. Cray and Mercury Computer Systems. We plan to support FPGAs as co-processors in PVTOL. Finally, automated mapping technology has been demonstrated with pMatlab. We plan to begin implementing automated mapping in PVTOL next year. Similar to PVL, as PVTOL matures and is used in more projects at Lincoln, we plan to propose concepts demonstrated in PVTOL to HPEC-SI for adoption into future versions of VSIPL++. © 2008 IEEE.
