This paper addresses the problem of target detection against a background of clutter by using frequency snapshots with reduced degrees of freedom (DOF). We derive the optimal detector under the Neyman-Pearson criterion for general frequency snapshots selection with arbitrary DOF. If the clutter statistics are known/well-estimated, a greedy method for selecting the frequency snapshots is presented. For unknown clutter statistics, we employ a uniform random frequency snapshot selection method and show how the DOF employed affects the detection performance.

In this paper, the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of quasi-stationary signals (QSS) in uniform linear arrays (ULAs) with unknown mutual coupling is considered. By taking advantage of the quasi-stationarity of signals and the special structure of mutual coupling matrix (MCM) of ULAs, a computational efficient algorithm is devised to determine the DOAs. Different from the existing approaches for DOA estimation with unknown mutual coupling, the proposed method can simultaneously enjoy various superiorities including: 1) it is computationally efficient without the need of spectral search, 2) it can resolve more sources, and 3) it is robust against unknown noise. Simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed DOA estimator.

In this paper, we propose an optimized tensor model for direction of departure (DOD) and direction of arrival (DOA) estimation with coprime multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar. We first develop the Toeplitz matrix using the consecutive lags in the sum-difference coarray after vectorizing the array covariance matrix. We then construct a generalized three-way tensor model and derive the optimized tensor by maximizing the number of targets. Then, the existing COMFAC technique is exploited for angle estimation. We show that the proposed method can identify more targets and achieve better performance by enforcing the three-way structure as compared to the subspacebased algorithms. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the theoretical analysis.

Conformal array is attractive due to its flexibility to attach to different shape of surface. However, beam pattern synthesis for conformal array to control power side lobes and different polarization components for two dimensional angle space is a challenge, especially the degree of freedom is limited. In this work, we propose a robust beam pattern synthesis formulation for conformal array based on constrained convex optimization. By penalizing the maximum gain of cross-polarization component levels, power side lobes and different polarization components are controlled in a manner that the number of constraints is no longer limited by the array DoF. The proposed formulation is a convex second-order cone programming, a computationally efficient algorithm based on the alternating directions of multipliers method is designed to solve it. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulation to synthesize a desired pattern with robustness.

A novel target detection algorithm for large array multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar in spatially correlated noise is proposed in this paper using canonical correlation technique (CCT). In the signal model, two separate sub-arrays are employed as the receive array of a transmit diversity MIMO radar system. Assume that the elementary noise in each sub-array has spatial correlation, and the number of receive elements is large and grows as the same rate with the snapshots. The detection statistics is constructed based on the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) criterion and the sample canonical correlation coefficient between the two subarrays. The expression of decision threshold is derived via the Tracy-Widom distribution of order 2 in random matrix theory. The simulation results show that the detection performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the conventional condition number (CN)-based algorithm in the presence of spatially correlated noise and large array.

Unlike phased array adopting invariable carrier frequency, frequency diverse array (FDA) introduces a tiny frequency increment across the array elements, leading to transmit beamforming associated with the parameters of range and angle. However, the beampattern generated by the conventional FDA is range-angle coupling, which is detrimental for target localization and interference suppression. In this paper, a new FDA scheme utilizing nonuniform element spacing and nonlinear frequency offset is proposed to provide a range-angle decoupled beampattern with narrower main lobe and no periodicity. Simulations and comparative results are presented to verify the superiority of the proposed scheme over the existing systems.

Each node or sensor in a network makes a local observation that is linearly related to a set of public and private parameters. The nodes send their observations to a fusion center to allow it to estimate a set of public parameters. However, the fusion center may also abuse this information to estimate other private parameters. To prevent leakage of the private parameters, each node first sanitizes its local observation using a local privacy mechanism before transmitting it to the fusion center. We consider the maximum privacy achievable under perfect utility in terms of the Cramer-Rao lower bounds. We propose a method to maximize the estimation error for inferring the private parameters while ensuring the estimation error for inferring the public parameters remains unchanged after sanitizing the sensors’ measurements.

A rapid increase in popularity of smart devices equipped with acoustic sensors enables the design of speech enhancement methods for distributed setups. In this work, we present a distributed noise reduction scheme in which the time-frequency masks and spatial filters are estimated at the nodes based on the locally available microphone signals and the compressed signals received from other nodes, where each node transmits only a single signal. The proposed block processing facilitates online estimation of masks and distributed spatial filters in an interchanged fashion. The results of performed numerical experiments indicate that the proposed online distributed noise reduction scheme performs similarly to the centralized approach, in which signals of all microphones of the distributed arrays are available for joint processing, and it significantly outperforms the local approach in which only the local microphone signals are available for the estimation of masks and spatial filters.

This paper proposes a new method for wideband directionof-arrival (DOA) estimation. The main idea of the proposed method is focusing the array output on frequency point to the reference frequency point. But different from coherent signalsubspace method (CSSM), it has no requirement of an initial DOA estimation. Atomic norm minimization (ANM) is then applied after the focusing step. Our proposed method is able to achieve better estimation performance than other wideband DOA estimators. Numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method compared to existing ones.

In this paper, a gridless DOA estimation method with coexistence of non-circular and circular signals is proposed by employing an enhanced sparse nested array, whose virtual array has no holes. The virtual signals derived from both sum and difference co-arrays are constructed based on atomic norm minimization. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.
