The emergence of software defined radio (SDR) aims to increase flexibility as well as reduce cost, size, weight and power (SWAP) inherent in traditional hardware radios. This paper is concerned with addressing issues associated with the formation of an array system from multiple SDR boards where each has an independent local oscillators (LO) in a multi-antenna system using representative examples such as localization and array shape estimation. In particular, practical experimental results are initially presented for estimating the unknown location of a single source using an SDR array of known array geometry. Furthermore, in the case that the SDR array geometry is unknown, a novel array shape estimation algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm estimates the antenna locations without requiring any external sources. This is achieved by allowing the array elements operate as transceivers.

We address the problem of distributed filtering in a wireless sensor network and develop distributed approximations of three variants of the ensemble Kalman filter. We express the update equations in an alternative information form in order to formulate a distributed measurement update mechanism. The distributed filters use randomized gossip to reach consensus on the statistics needed to perform an update. Simulation results suggest that in the case of linear measurements and high-dimensional nonlinear measurements (with measurement model parameters known network-wide) with nonlinear state dynamics the proposed schemes achieve accuracy comparable to state-of-the-art distributed filters while significantly reducing the communication overhead.

In this paper, an extended nested array strategy is proposed for degree of freedom (DOF) enhancement. Based on the augmented nested array (ANA), with the inter-element spacings in the side subarray increased, the strategy provides the possibility to acquire higher number of DOF than the existing nested-like arrays, such as the nested array, ANA, improved nested array and the maximum inter-element spacing constraint array. The one-side extended nested array (OS-ENA) is specifically proposed based on the ENA strategy, which can successfully avoid the holes brought by the sparse distribution of sensors and increase the DOF. The analytical expressions of sensor locations and DOF are derived. Simulations of the direction-of-arrival estimation verify the superiorities of the proposed OS-ENA with the spacial smoothing MUSIC algorithm used.

The authors examine optimization of the antenna array beamformer bank for a technique to apply coherent signal subspace processing in the beam-space of a bank of true time delay beamformers. This technique offers computational expense advantages over element-space methods, Mean Square Error (MSE) performance similar to wideband coherent subspace techniques and is frequency invariant. This article reports on simulation experiments to improve the true time delay beamformer bank configuration so as to optimize MSE performance of source direction resolution for closely spaced wideband sources. Simulations include pattern search, genetic algorithm and simulated annealing global optimization methods. Results indicate that performance can be significantly improved by applying these methods to the beamformer bank design.

We have investigated the utility of field-of-view adaptation for multimodal sensing in cluttered multi-target environments. Measurement data from multiple integrated sensors are collected at a fusion center, which employs a soft association procedure to integrate them into the estimation procedure. A variance penalty model for the limited fields-of-view property is incorporated into the state estimation procedure. This model also forms the basis of an optimization problem that determines the best next-step sensing parameters for the changing target environment. Numerical simulations demonstrate the benefit of the proposed method for both tracking and association metrics compared to a non-adaptive tracker.

This paper develops a closed-form solution that improves the projection matrix method for time of arrival (TOA) source localization in the presence of sensor position inaccuracy. The projection approach is attractive because it does not require the use of an extra variable as in the traditional closed-form solution. Compared with the previous projection method, the proposed algorithm offers a closed-form solution and at the same time attains the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) performance for Gaussian noise over the small noise region. The performance of the proposed method is validated by simulations.

Sparsity based signal recovery has seen great success in solving underdetermined systems of equations. This success is due, in large part, to a relaxation: the l0-norm is replaced by the l1-norm, which results in a convex problem. However, such a relaxation may lead to a suboptimal solution, one that may even be asymptotically biased. We propose formulating sparse signal recovery as a binary program, and we derive the conditions under which such a formulation perfectly recovers the signal support. This derivation equips us with a constraint on the dictionary's spectrum. However, designing such a dictionary is a combinatorial problem, so we suggest a heuristic which can be readily satisfied using the alternating projections algorithm. Applied to angle of arrival (AoA) estimation using a sensor array, we show how this paradigm outperforms both the basis pursuit l1-norm relaxation and the Matrix Pencil method.

Since the number of independent array data snapshots is limited by the availability of real-world data, we propose a parametric bootstrap for resampling. The proposed parametric bootstrap is based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) following the generative approach to machine learning. For the GAN model we chose the Wasserstein GAN with penalized norm of gradient of the critic with respect to its input (wGAN_gp). The approach is demonstrated with synthetic and real-world ocean acoustic array data.

The classic DSP sampling property: "(Uniform) sampling of a bandlimited signal leads to (perfect) replication in the spectral domain." does not hold in the vertex Graph signal processing (GSP) model. sampling uniformly in GSP does not lead to perfect replicas, but rather distorted replicas [1]. In [2], we introduced a Step 1-Step 2 Companion Model Method, S2CM2, as a way to introduce new GSP concepts. The GSP companion model is closest to the DSP time model (with different boundary conditions), making it easier to extend DSP concepts. In this paper, we consider GSP sampling in the companion model. We show that GSP sampling theory in the companion model is similar to DSP sampling theory by illustrating the four sampling steps: Subsampling, Decimation, Upsampling, Interpolation, in the companion model.

Adaptive beamformers operating in snapshot deficient situations often estimate regularization parameters such as the diagonal loading level or the signal subspace dimension. We propose a new beamformer that avoids this problem by computing its array weights as a mixture of the array weights for a set of beamformers. The new beamformer's average output power asymptotically approaches the best performance of any of the beamformers in the set. Applying this technique to the Dominant Mode Rejection (DMR) beamformer obviates the need to estimate the dominant signal subspace dimension. An example simulation of a complicated passive sonar scenario illustrates that the blended beamformer's performance rivals the performance of the best fixed subspace DMR beamformer, and may outperform all of them in nonstationary environments.
