BTT(Bank-to-Turn) vehicle is a kind of typical nonlinear system which has parametric uncertainty and heavy exogenous disturbance. This paper presents a partial linearization method use of robust guaranteed cost control techniques for the design and analysis of BTT vehicle control laws to make the model closer to the actual system. Considering the practical model of BTT vehicle, we employed partial linearization rather than complete linearization in system modeling, in order to prevent the system errors caused by low accuracy in complete linearization. Under the circumstance of satisfying Lipschitz conditions, Lyapunov function was employed to get the sufficient condition for the robust control law of the BTT vehicle system to exist, and transformed into a feasible solution with linear matrix inequalities method. The numerical simulation results show the algorithm can makes up the characteristic distortion of nonlinear system for excessive simplification model, so that the designed control law becomes more reasonable and effective.

The terahertz band is considered the last frontier for wireless communications and expected to play a significant role in beyond 5G networks. Besides supporting extremely high data rates for existing devices, the terahertz band is also expected to connect future nanoscale devices using graphene-based nano-antenna, which happens to radiate in 0.1-10 THz band. In this band, higher order derivatives of Gaussian pulses can provide energy-efficient communication for nanodevices. In this paper, we propose a metric, called root mean square (RMS) frequency spread, to detect the derivative order of the pulse at the receiving base station using uniform linear array antennas. simulation experiments demonstrate that RMS frequency spread can be used to detect the derivative order of Gaussian pulses with 99% accuracy for distances up to 50 cm. This finding opens up a new design space for nanoscale terahertz communication, which can encode information in time derivative order of the transmitted pulse. © 2018 IEEE.

As technology scales, VLSI performance has experienced an exponential growth. As feature sizes shrink, however, we will face new challenges such as soft errors (single-event upsets) to maintain the reliability of circuits. Recent studies have tried to address soft errors with error detection and correction techniques such as error correcting codes and redundant execution. However, these techniques come at a cost of additional storage or lower performance. In this paper, we present a different approach to address soft errors. We start from building a quantitative understanding of the error propagation in software and propose a systematic evaluation of the impact of bit flip caused by soft errors on floating-point operations. Furthermore, we introduce a novel model to deal with soft errors. More specifically, we assume soft errors have occurred in memory and try to know how the errors will manifest in the results of programs. Therefore, some soft errors can be tolerated if the error in results is smaller than the intrinsic inaccuracy of floating-point representations or within a predefined range. We focus on analyzing error propagation for floating-point arithmetic operations. Our approach is motivated by interval analysis. We model the rounding effect of floating-point numbers, which enable us to simulate and predict the error propagation for single floating-point arithmetic operations for specific soft errors. In other words, we model and simulate the relation between the bit flip rate, which is determined by soft errors in hardware, and the error of floating-point arithmetic operations. The simulation results enable us to tolerate certain types of soft errors without expensive error detection and correction processing.

The modernization of energy infrastructure otherwise called Power Grid, with integration of renewable energy sources like Solar, Wind has emerged as a key focus area across the world. Over 1.2 billion people do not have access to electricity which incudes over 550 million people in Africa and 300 million in India. Further to this situation, the report from international Energy Agency forecasts power generation from renewable energy sources to nearly triple from year 2010 to 2035 reaching 31%. Microgrid or Distributed Energy Island System plays a vital role to overcome these challenges. Microgrid, which comprises of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) serving few community loads, are key enabler for renewable integration. These systems also play a significant role in rural electrification. These systems can be operated in semiautonomous manner or in autonomous/islanding mode. Some of the operational scenarios in these systems are related to modernization of power systems and hence explorative. This leaves a huge potential for Industry and academia collaborative approach. The purpose of this study is to analyze the operational scenarios both existing or new and how the visualization tools and ecosystem play a major role in the direction of collaboration and optimization that leads to benefit the community in the future.

To evaluate the operational benefits of ADS-B based surveillance, a China Airspace Capability Model (CACM) is defined to measure the flight separation with safety constraint. The CACM represents airspace constraints by imposing in trail separation on dense routes and output delay metrics enable the user to quantify the impacts of changes. We use Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) system to estimate the delay savings associated with ADS-B equipage in two scenarios, one with 15 minutes in trail procedure used in current Air Traffic Center (ATC) and one with 5 minutes in trail which ADS-B supported procedure. The initial data comes from CAAC central and southern region flights of 2010. With ADS-B equipage scenario, we select ADS-B to use for airborne separation assurance application and utilize CACM to calculate minimum airborne safety separation. We simulate the complex interplay of the air traffic system, which provides a timeframe to study the interactions among the different ATM participants as they interact over the course of an entire day. After all data processing, the affected data are recorded and computed based on CACM model. In this way, we quantify the relationship between surveillance system performance and flight delay that reflect on benefit directly. The preliminary result shows that the deployment of ADS-B surveillance would reduce annual operational delay in the China airspace. simulations show significant reductions in operational delay attributed to the ADS-B. The largest reduction in delay was recorded by the ATFM where 35 percent of the average delay savings were realized.

Advancements in nanotechnology promises new capabilities for Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor extremely fine-grained events by deploying sensors as small as a few hundred nanometers. Researchers predict that such tiny sensors can transmit wireless data using graphene-based nano-antenna radiating in the terahertz band (0.1-10 THz). Powering such wireless communications with nanoscale energy supply, however, is a major challenge to overcome. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient event monitoring framework for nano IoT that enables nanosensors to update a remote base station about the location and type of the detected event using only a single short pulse. Nanosensors encode different events using different center frequencies with non overlapping half power bandwidth over the entire terahertz band. Using uniform linear array (ULA) antenna, the base station localizes the events by estimating the direction of arrival of the pulse and classifies them from the center frequency estimated by spectral centroid of the received signal. simulation results confirm that, from a distance of 1 meter, a 6th derivative Gaussian pulse consuming only 1 atto Joule can achieve localization and classification accuracies of 1.58 degree and 98.8%, respectively. © 2018 IEEE.

The main approaches used to study the transient behavior of grounding systems subject to lightning strokes are based to simple and approximated circuit models or to the more rigorous electromagnetic field theory. Both philosophies have pros and cons. In the paper, it is illustrated a circuit model developed by the authors in the past years and suitable to describe with sufficient accuracy the behavior of complex and realistic grounding systems under surge condition. In particular, the peculiarity of this model is the inclusion of current controlled voltage sources into the classical RLC circuit, in order to take into account the resistive coupling among the elementary electrodes of a complex grounding system. simulation results have been compared to ones based on electromagnetic field theory to identify the frequency range of validity of the proposed model.

Three dimensional spatial distribution modeling of soil texture under agricultural systems using a sequence indicator simulation algorithm

Understanding the distribution of alluvial soil textures on a large scale is crucial for agricultural and environmental management. In our study an indicator variogram and a sequence indicator simulation (SIS) algorithm were used to analyze and simulate the spatial distribution of soil textures based on observations of 139 soil profiles in a 15 km(2) region in the Huabei alluvial plain in China. The nugget-to-sill ratio value (SH) of the indicator variograms for all textures in a vertical direction (Z) was equal to 1. This Suggests that spatial auto-correlation dominates in the direction of sedimentary deposition with 0.05 m sampling intervals. In contrast, SH ratios from 0.48 to 0.81 show that the soil textures have a degree of randomness in the horizontal direction (X, Y) where the sampling distance was about 300 m. Using the indicator variograms in 3 directions (X, Y and Z) as outlined above, a 3D SIS algorithm was used to simulate textures. Finally, the simulation results were evaluated by the reproduction of a histogram, variogram and the mean absolute error (MAE) of prediction. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the histogram reproduction showed that the main textures (sand, sandy loam and clay) were described well, whereas the less prevalent textures were underestimated. The MAPE of the indicator variograms reproduction were reasonable although some deviation existed as less prevalent textures in the vertical direction. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the SIS prediction was 0.47. This result is considered acceptable for a category variable because of the stochastic nature of soil textures in a horizontal direction, and hence may provide useful data for other agricultural research.
