Evolution of the computational science community: The dynamics of topics and collaborations in 24 years of ICCS and JoCS publications

We analyze the topic structure of 10,299 publications from the international conference on Computational Science (ICCS) between 2001 and 2024 as well as the Journal of Computational Science (JoCS) between 2010 and 2023, using natural language processing techniques and network analysis. The computational science classification corpus was created into 15 main disciplines and 256 sub-disciplines sourced from Wikipedia. Among the 15 main disciplines, machine learning became the most popular topic after 2019, surpassing parallel & distributed computing, which peaked in the early 2010s. ICCS and JoCS show differences in research popularity in both first and second-level disciplines. Algorithm theory, Mathematical modeling, and network science are the most dominant topics in both ICCS and JoCS. Different disciplines present different trends in ICCS and JoCS. In the past 24 years, machine learning related topics have gained the most attention in both ICCS and JoCS. We also examined and compared the correlation between the trends in ICCS and Google search Trends. The collaboration of disciplinary networks of second-level disciplines exhibits a scale-free characteristic, and the network structures have undergone significant evolution over 24 years. Moreover, different disciplinary communities exhibit different ”introverted” and ”extroverted” community characteristics within the network. Additionally, we examined the life span of thematic workshops and the evolution of authors’ collaborations inside and after ICCS.

The development of web has brought rich applications and services, giving users convenience, but also causing that the user's information is locked and isolated, the users' resource are disperse, and the operation granularity is not uniform, which ultimately harm the end-users. This paper presents PGOS,Personal Grid Operation System, a general-purpose software for controlled sharing of cross-domain resources in personal net computing [1]. It accesses disperse resources uniformly from web client in order to connect the information islands formed by the companies, and it provides uniform fine-grained sharing mechanism, in addition, we can build new applications by combining the integrated resources in PGOS. The article proposes PGOS Core to complete decentralized user authentication, authorization and access control, Funnel is used to abstract the resource and make decentralized resource discovery, simultaneously PGSML, the Personal Grid Service Markup Language, is put forward to construct PGOS applications. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we present a parallel wavelet transform based implementation of Finite element method for solution of multiscale PDEs. The parallel wavelet transform is adopted from [1] and is used for parallelizing a wavelet based finite element code. The parallel wavelet transform results in optimal load balancing with minimum communication requirements. The algorithm is highly scalable approaching perfect speedup as the problem size is increased. The implementation details of the parallel wavelet transform and its application in solution of some linear elliptic PDEs are discussed. © 2010 IEEE.

A robotic ball-catching system built from a multipurpose 7-DOF lightweight arm (DLR-LWR-III) and a 12 DOF four-fingered hand (DLR-Hand-II) is presented. Other than in previous work a mechatronically complex dexterous hand is used for grasping the ball and the decision of where, when and how to catch the ball, while obeying joint, speed and work cell limits, is formulated as an unified nonlinear optimization problem with nonlinear constraints. Three different objective functions are implemented, leading to significantly different robot movements. The high computational demands of an online realtime optimization are met by parallel computation on distributed computing resources (a cluster with 32 CPU cores). The system achieves a catch rate of > 80% and is regularly shown as a live demo at our institute.

Although shared memory programming models show good programmability compared to message passing programming models, their implementation by page-based software distributed shared memory systems usually suffers from high memory consistency costs. The major part of these costs is internode data transfer for keeping virtual shared memory consistent. A good prefetch strategy can reduce this cost. We develop two prefetch techniques, TReP and HReP, which are based on the execution history of each parallel region. These techniques are evaluated using offline simulations with the NAS parallel Benchmarks and the LINPACK benchmark. On average, TReP achieves an efficiency (ratio of pages prefetched that were subsequently accessed) of 96% and a coverage (ratio of access faults avoided by prefetches) of 65%. HReP achieves an efficiency of 91% but has a coverage of 79%. Treating the cost of an incorrectly prefetched page to be equivalent to that of a miss, these techniques have an effective page miss rate of 63% and 71% respectively. Additionally, these two techniques are compared with two well-known software distributed shared memory (sDSM) prefetch techniques, Adaptive++ and TODFCM. TReP effectively reduces page miss rate by 53% and 34% more, and HReP effectively reduces page miss rate by 62% and 43% more, compared to Adaptive++ and TODFCM respectively. As for Adaptive++, these techniques also permit bulk prefetching for pages predicted using temporal locality, amortizing network communication costs and permitting bandwidth improvement from multi-rail network interfaces. © 2010 IEEE.

Large scale sensor networks are non trivial to deploy due to their heterogeneous, distributed nature. This paper presents a technique to configure and deploy sensor applications on heterogeneous networks that is based on the use of virtual filesystem abstractions. The approach can augment existing sensor software build procedures with the ability to configure and deploy software, all using the filesystem framework. The paper presents an architecture to implement the idea and illustrates its use by means of a prototype. Automation of the configuration and deployment processes by use of scripting based techniques implemented using the filesystem abstractions is described.

In this paper, a multi-channel MAC protocol, called M&M, with multiple channel reservation is proposed to tackle the channel conflict problem. M&M is fully distributed with no requirements of time synchronization or multi-radio, so it is very practical to implement M&M in resource-constrained sensor nodes. M&M can make nodes to choose one actually idle channel for communications from all assumed idle channels. Therefore, M&M can greatly alleviate, if not completely eliminate, packet collisions resulted by the channel conflict, and thus conserve more energy to prolong the lifetime of WSNs. To investigate the values of multiple channel reservation, extensive simulation and real testbed experiments are conducted. The results show that when the number of channels becomes larger or loads are heavy, M&M improves energy efficiency and throughput significantly. © 2010 IEEE.

Pervasive Grid computing Platforms include centralized computing nodes (e.g. parallel servers) as well as decentralized and mobile devices. Pervasive Grid applications include data-and computing-intensive components which can be mapped also onto decentralized and mobile nodes. The effective and practical success of this mapping resides also in deriving proper configurations of applications which consider the limited memory capabilities of those resources. In this paper we target this issue by showing how we can study and configure the memory requirements of an Emergency Management application. We present our solutions by using the ASSISTANT programming model for Pervasive Grid applications.

Clonal selection algorithm (CSA) is one of the most representative Immune algorithms (IA) and was applied into the protein structure prediction (PSP) on AB off-lattice model, but it required a long time in the calculation. So in this paper, a parallel clonal selection algorithm (CSA) was proposed, which was implemented using distributed computing model that employed OpenMP on four core computer. In the algorithm, several sub-populations replaced the original single population, and each sub-population evolved independently, and the current best individual was distributed into all the sub-populations. The parallel algorithm overcame premature convergence and found global optima efficiently. And the experiment results shown that the performance had been significantly improved. © 2010 Crown Copyright.
