Since various XML query applications have come to the fore recently, performance optimization becomes the research hotspot. With the popularity of multi-core computing condition, parallelization appears as an important optimization measure. The paper presents a parallel solution to XML query application through the combination of parallel XML parsing and parallel XML query. The XML parsing is based on arbitrary XML data partition and parallel sub-tree construction with the final merging procedure. After XML parsing, the region encodings of XML data are obtained for relation matrix construction in that the XPath evaluation in query procedure is based on relation matrix. The matrix construction procedure and query primitives are parallelized to boost performance. As a whole, our solution makes use of multi-core environment through parallelization of key execution stages in query process. The key execution stages are verified by experiment and the whole effect of the solution is presented.

Over the last few decades, the Internet has grown exponentially, bringing about hard questions about its future sustainability. At the same time, the proliferation of wireless and mobile devices with Internet connectivity has created a new landscape for a wireless future Internet. It is evident that in the emerging “Future Internet” (FI), wireless and mobile networking will remain significantly important, but at the same time increasingly complicated. This paper discusses the importance of influencing the ongoing design of the FI to fully integrate mobile and wireless networks in a simplified, automated, and scalable manner. Through this discussion, it is proposed that seamless wireless networking in the FI will be achieved by applying “autonomic concepts” based on policies. The aim is to address the lack of critical functionality from today's Internet, namely management decentralization, seamless mobility, and spontaneous communications, through the adoption of distributed policy-based management (PBM).

To support any services in all-IP networks, it is necessary to allocate both computing resource and network resource (bandwidth) simultaneously and effectively. The authors proposed the joint resource allocation method for multiple resource types, assuming the non-delay resource allocation. Although the proposed method can achieve an efficient use of resources, it may result in an unfair use of resources in which resources may be monopolized by a specific service. Therefore, the authors proposed the fair joint multiple resource allocation method which tries to equalize the total amount of resource allocated to each service. This paper proposes to enhance the fair joint resource allocation method, assuming three or more services and unbalanced generation traffic. It is demonstrated by basic simulation evaluations that the enhanced fair joint resource allocation method could enable fair resource allocation among multiple services without a large decline in resource efficiency.

This paper presents a distributed algorithm for mobile sensor networks to monitor the environment. With this algorithm, multiple mobile sensor nodes can collectively sample the environmental field and recover the environmental field function via machine learning approaches. The mobile sensor nodes are able to self-organise so that the distribution of mobile sensor nodes matches to the estimated environmental field function. In this way, it is possible to make the next-step sampling more accurate and efficient. The machine learning approach used for function regression is support vector regression (SV R) algorithm. A distributed SV R learning algorithm is used for on-line learning. The self-organised algorithm used for deployment is based on locational optimisation techniques. In particular, Lloyd's algorithm for optimising centroidal Voronoi tessellations (CVT) is used to spread mobile sensor nodes over the monitored environment. The environmental field function is simulated in static and dynamic settings and the demonstration on the simulated environments shows the proposed algorithm is effective.

This paper examines the system dynamics of a networked multi-agent system, operating with a consensus-type algorithm, that can be influenced by external agents. We refer to this class of networks as semi-autonomous. We introduce a control scheme for such semi-autonomous networks, involving excitation of the network by the external agents, with the objective of manipulating or steering the network. In this context, we consider the situation where the external agents deliver a constant mean control signal. We proceed to examine the resultant mean and covariance of the network output and relate these quantities to circuit-theoretic notions of the network, quantifying the network's amenability to external signals. Four protocols for tree graphs, to promote and deter convergence and to increase and reduce average variance within the network are then presented. These protocols involve decentralized local edge swaps that can be performed in parallel and asynchronously.

MapReduce has been very successful in implementing large-scale data-intensive applications. Because of its simple programming model, MapReduce has also begun being utilized as a programming tool for more general distributed and parallel applications, e.g., HPC applications. However, its applicability is limited due to relatively inefficient runtime performance and hence insufficient support for flexible workflow. In particular, the performance problem is not negligible in iterative MapReduce applications. On the other hand, today, HPC community is going to be able to utilize very fast and energy-efficient Solid State Drives (SSDs) with 10 Gbit/sec-class read/write performance. This fact leads us to the possibility to develop "High-Performance MapReduce'', so called. From this perspective, we have been developing a new MapReduce framework called "SSS'' based on distributed key-value store (KVS). In this paper, we first discuss the limitations of existing MapReduce implementations and present the design and implementation of SSS. Although our implementation of SSS is still in a prototype stage, we conduct two benchmarks for comparing the performance of SSS and Hadoop. The results indicate that SSS performs 1-10 times faster than Hadoop.

Clock synchronization is a fundamental issue in communication networks and distributed systems, and clock skew is the inherent cause for clock desynchronization. Clock skew estimation is essential to improve the efficiency and reduce the overhead of clock synchronization schemes, and it is especially beneficial for resource-constrained devices such as sensor nodes in dynamic environments. According to the measurement, clock skew is environment sensitive, and no existing clock skew estimation schemes can accurately capture such dynamic behaviors. In this paper, we investigate a general clock synchronization problem with variable clock skews and propose a new skew estimation model based on a hybrid approach to characterizing the dynamic of clock skews. To estimate the time-varying clock state vector, we employ the Interactive Multi-Model (IMM) Kalman filter, which can make soft decisions by combining results from different models. Extensive simulations have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive clock skew estimation algorithm, which achieves a better performance with moderate computational complexity.

A novel approach to building an intelligent robot, which can be expected to show many intelligent behaviors as people do, is proposed. This approach exploits a computer device called Tesla S1070, a personal supercomputer, to control a humanoid robot named NAO. The Tesla S1070 acts as a human head, in which thousands of artificial neural network, the basis of an artificial brain (AB), evolve in a parallel way and act as a human brain. The CUDA (computing Unified Device Architecture) technology is employed to solve the key problem, i.e., how to improve the evolution speed of thousands of neural network. The general architecture of this approach, the reason why the Tesla S1070 is selected, and how the data structure of neural net modules should be modified to meet the demands of CUDA are presented in detail. This approach provides a method both for controlling a robot by the AB, and for demonstrating the power of the AB through a robot.

To address the problem of outlier detection in wireless sensor networks, in this paper we propose a robust principal component analysis based technique to detect anomalous or faulty sensor data in a distributed wireless sensor network with a focus on data integrity and accuracy problem. The main key features are that it considers the correlation existing among the sensor data in order to disclose anomalies that span through a number of neighboring sensors, does not require error free data for PCA model construction and the operation takes place in a distributed fashion. In this paper, a two-step algorithm is proposed. First, the intent was to find an accurate estimate of the correlation of sensor data to build up a robust PCA model that could then be used for fault detection. This locally developed correlation based robust PCA model tends to accentuate the contribution of close observations in comparison with distant observations and does not impose any constraints in model design. Second, we use mahalanobis distance, a multivariate distance metric to determine the similarity between the current sensor readings against the developed sensor data model. Combined with component analysis, mahalanobis distance is extended to examine whether a sensor node is an outlier from a model defined by principal components based on principal component analysis. We examined the algorithm's performance using simulation with synthetic and real sensor data streams. The results clearly show that our approach outperforms existing methods in terms of accuracy even when processing corrupted data.

The effect of advances in the fields of ubiquitous computing, wireless communications and embedded system design has seen a corresponding rapid improvement of wireless sensor technology. Sensor networks have emerged as a platform for deployment and sustenance of critical applications that require real-time sensing and data acquisition for decision-making purposes. A significant number of malicious attacks against the security of such networks have been identified in recent times. Considering the untrusted environments of operations of such networks, the threat of distributed attacks against constrained sensory resources i.e. sensor power, computation and communication capabilities cannot be overlooked. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy logic-based approach towards achieving demarkation in the values of specific parameters of an attack detection scheme for detecting distributed node-exhaustion attacks in wireless sensor networks. Using the Unified And-Or (UAO) aggregation operator, we model and formulate a mechanism to achieve a tradeoff between frequent attack detection and sensor node energy utilization. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of our approach in addressing the issue of computing the optimal parameter values for achieving a reasonable tradeoff between attack detection rate and sensor node energy utilization rate.
