In the past few years, many locality-based approaches have been proposed to reduce cross-ISPs traffic caused by BitTorrent (BT). However, most of these approaches have taken such an assumption that there are always plenty of peers in client's neighborhood, which results in inefficiently reducing cross-ISPs traffic. In this paper, we study the characteristics of geographical distribution of peers in BT swarms. By measuring and analyzing more than 2 000 .torrent file swarms of BT in 5-month, the geographical distributions of peers is found to follow Zipf-like law both in country level and AS level. More specifically, the distributions of peers exhibit a non-Zipf head, but Zipf tail. Our work shows that the characteristics of geographical distributions of peers can be used to better understand and answer questions related to traffic optimization of BT.

Our research proposes an adaptive real-time-service-based distributed scheduling scheme (RTDS) for wireless network system with the Non-Transparent RS architecture which is specified in the IEEE 802.16j standard. The main object of our research is to utilize the RS to decrease the overhead of the BS and enhance the QoS of the real time service connections. We obtain the initial priority value for the order of scheduling through the quantification of each service type specified in IEEE 802.16 standard. The priority value varies according to the bandwidth request and the channel status of each connection, and it may be increased by a emergency packet event or decreased by taking fairness into consideration. The simulation results show that our proposed scheduling scheme performs better than other representative researches and also additionally guarantees the QoS of real time service connections. Due to the fall in the price of multicore processors, today's non-dedicated clusters tend to include this kind of hardware in their configurations. How general purpose Operating System (OS) schedulers will support requirements like the coexistence of soft-real time, best effort or interactive applications are open questions that need to be addressed carefully. For these reasons, new user interfaces, middlewares, and environments that can fill the gap between the user and the new processor architectures are needed. Our job scheduler for non-dedicated clusters termed CISNE; has been extended to take into account issues discussed earlier: the mixture of different types of applications considering the multicore features of current desktop environments. We propose two initial policies for dual-core processors, both based on core affinity. We assign cores taking into account the kind of application (App) or the kind of user that owns the application (Usr). Experimentation, in terms of actual executions in a real cluster, and simulations has allowed us to see the success of our contributions.

The technique of distributed storage coding has been widely used in wireless sensor networks for increasing the robustness of data storage and efficiency of data retrieval. Existing works mainly focus on scenarios in which each storage node stores a linear combination of a subset of K data packets generated by different source nodes. By solving the linear equations, a collector can recover all the K data packets with high probability. This paper explores the problem of flexible and efficient data dissemination and retrieval in wireless sensor networks. Our scheme exploits the broadcast nature of wireless transmission and improves the traditional random walk algorithm for efficient data dissemination. Furthermore, through the use of Fountain codes in data encoding, it enables a mobile collector to recover up-to-date data generated by any subset of source nodes. Specifically, by querying any t(1 + ε) storage nodes at the t-th time slot, the target data can be retrieved without having to decode all the source packets. Simulation results validate our analysis and show that the proposed schemes are flexible and efficient.

We consider the problem of distributed classification of multiple observations of the same object that are collected in an ad-hoc network of vision sensors. Assuming that each sensor captures a different observation of the same object, the problem is to classify this object by distributed processing from the sensors. We present a graph-based problem formulation whose objective function captures the smoothness of candidate labels on the data manifold. We design a distributed average consensus algorithm for estimating the unknown object class by computing the value of the above smoothness objective function for different class hypotheses. It initially estimates the objective function locally, based on the observation of each sensor. All the observations are then progressively taken into account in the estimation of the objective function, along the iterations of the distributed consensus algorithm. We illustrate the performance of the distributed classification algorithm by simulation of multi-view face recognition in an ad-hoc network of vision sensors. When the training set is sufficiently large, the simulation results show that the consensus classification decision is equivalent to the decision of a centralized system that would have access to all observations.

Deployment is an important issue in wireless sensor networks(WSNs).Most of recent researches focus on the optimal deployment patterns for full-coverage *** practice, there are only finite number of nodes can be used in WSNs applications, which cannot guarantee that the entire region can be monitored;On the other hand, the information generated from monitored objects is distributed unevenly in the monitored *** to get a reasonable network deployment with the finite number of sensors becomes a practical problem, which should not be neglected. From all above, we propose a new coverage problem in WSNs named N-node coverage, which refers to using the limited number of nodes to achieve maximum information *** this problem we use the information obtained from the monitored region as the new evaluation standard for network *** the basis of this standard, we construct the N-node network coverage model and convert the deployment problem to a combinatorial optimization problem, we present a heuristic optimization deployment scheme, the OPEN, to solve the *** results show that the OPEN can effectively improve the performance of sensor network coverage and provide practical guidance for deployment of WSNs.

This paper proposes an efficient storage virtualization system which allows users to view hard disk resources constituted of numerous nodes as a large logical space using distributed hash tables of P2P networking. The proposed system is developed at the device level of an operating system (e.g. MS-Windows) and is suitable for users in Intranet environments. This system is developed to be recognized as a single hard disk at the Windows Explorer for users' conveniences and does not require any supplementary client program at the application layer. In addition, it enhances security via cutting off breaches from external networks.

In video surveillance there is an ever-growing demand for heavily distributed radio cooperating objects that Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) can satisfy. We present a preliminary study of an energy efficient multimodal WVSN using a main node deciding which camera to trigger based on the information from a Pyroelectric InfraRed (PIR) network. The evaluation of the proposed approach against the solution with PIRs onboard shows significantly reduced cameras' ON-time, enabling network lifetime prolongation up to 75%. Furthermore, including cameras ' available energy in wake-up rules, which would be significant for the networks comprising a photovoltaic power source, augments additionally the system's lifetime. The performance of our approach is evaluated in MATLAB simulation.

New service providers, completely separated from the Internet Service Providers (ISP), are growing today in the Internet scenario to create new multimedia services through the P2P approach. These providers are manifesting great interest not only for classical multimedia applications, like video streaming and video on demand, but also for other applications, like for example video-conferencing, multi-party games, private video-chat rooms, and real-time video teaching for e-learning, that usually contain a small number of group members, and the groups are often created and destroyed relatively dynamically. For this kind of applications, use of the P2P approach constitutes a challenging research activity in the immediate future. In addition, new business models are needed to support the economical growth of these kinds of providers. An idea at the basis of the paper is that users are divided in two classes, according to the way they pay the service: in bandwidth (cheap-tariff peers), or with some money (full-tariff peers). The target of this paper is to define a revenue model for providers of services of a new P2P-based platform for multipoint communications for small groups of high-interactive users.

Wired-cum-wireless networks are interconnected through proxy or gateway that acts as router and also caters for link MTU mismatch between the two networks. In IPv6 based networks, TCP is mandatory for bulk data transfer from wired to wireless host. This results in end-to-end TCP session through the default proxy. The single proxy supporting a large number of TCP sessions; is vulnerable to buffer overflow which results in end-to-end retransmissions, that degrades TCP performance. The use of split-TCP sessions across proxy has been proposed in order to improve TCP performance in heterogeneous networks by researchers. We assert that the availability of multiple proxies for interconnectivity (that is usually the case) can be exploited in order to make TCP efficient. We propose Staggered-TCP; an architecture that manages parallel split-TCP sessions across multiple proxies. Through simulations we show that for bulk data transfer, our proposed solution optimizes communication, simultaneously providing load balancing services.
