A method based on ant colony algorithm (ACA) is proposed to train weights and thresholds for Back-propagation (BP) neural network. BP algorithm has been widely used in training artificial neural network (ANN). This algorithm has many attractive features, such as adaptive learning, self-organism, and fault tolerant ability. All of them make BP one of the most successful algorithms in various fields. But, BP suffers from relatively slow convergence speed, extensive computations and possible divergence for certain conditions. As a new bionic algorithm, ACA has gained very good performance in solving traveling salesman problem (TSP) and other optimization problems. Its properties such as distributed computation, heuristic searching and robustness have well conquered the long convergence speed and premature problem, which are the main deficiencies of BP algorithm. Experiments suggest the method proposed has resolved those problems efficiently.

NEPTUNE Canada has installed and is operating a regional cabled ocean observatory from the coast across the northern Juan de Fuca Plate in the northeastern Pacific. Installation of the first suite of instruments and connectivity equipment was completed in 2009, so this system now provides the continuous power and bandwidth to collect integrated data on physical, chemical, geological, and biological gradients at temporal resolutions relevant to the dynamics of the earth-ocean system. The building of this facility integrates hardware, software, and people networks. Hardware progress to date includes: installation of the 800km powered fiber-optic backbone in fall 2007 (10kV DC and 10Gbsec communications);technological development of Nodes and Junction Boxes;acquisition/development and testing of Instruments;development of mobile instrument platforms such as a) a Vertical Profiler (NGK Ocean, Japan) and b) a Crawler (Jacobs University, Bremen);and integration of over a thousand components into an operating subsea sensor system. Nodes, extension cables, junction boxes, and instruments were installed at 4 out of 5 locations in 2009;the fifth Node (Endeavour Ridge) will be instrumented in September 2010. In parallel, software and hardware systems have been developed for acquiring, archiving, and delivering the continuous real-time data through the Internet to the world -already many terabytes of data (about 60TB/yr). A web environment (Oceans 2.0) to combine this data access with analysis and visualization, collaborative tools, interoperability, and instrument control is being released. Finally, a network of scientists and technicians are contributing to the process in every phase, and data users already number in the thousands. Temperature measurements are one of the most significant factors in condition monitoring and protecting transformers as well as estimating their life expectancy. With switchable transformers, it is also significant to carry out temperature monitoring to protect the switching devices. This paper presents techniques to manage temperature measurements of the windings and core of a 3-phase 10kVA switchable distribution transformer as well as switching devices that connect the tappings of the transformer. Serial digital temperature sensors DS18S20 were utilized to read the temperatures of all intended points which were distributed around the transformer and switching devices. Multi-drop connections through 1-Wire® buses were implemented to interface the sensors with some micro controllers which were located in some separated modules. Furthermore a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus was used to enable the exchange of measurement results between the modules. Software has also been developed to follow a previously developed protocol for communication through the CAN bus. From testing results, it could be shown that the techniques could be implemented by using the embedded system to achieve reliable distributed temperature measurements for the transformer and switching devices. In addition, results of the measurements reveal that the implementation of a parallel configuration of the windings at high loads reduces losses caused by the windings, which in turn improves the efficiency of the transformer.

A computational framework for determining the data loss rate for three basic types of burst assembly algorithms of optical burst switched(OBS) network is proposed here. The model is based on our previous work, where a computational scheme for capturing the effect of time correlation of input IP-packet sources on characteristics of assembled burst under various burst assembly algorithms, has been developed. So, the framework, presented here, is also capable of analysing the impact of time correlation on data loss under basic types of burst assemblers. We observe that data loss increases with increase in source correlation for all types of assembler though the effect is more emphasised in case of timer based assembler in comparison with burst threshold based assembler. With the proposed model, the constant loss contours in load-correlation plane for parameterized assembler has also been obtained. This can be applied to design initial assembly parameters for static assemblers and adaptation rules for dynamic assemblers under varying load and source traffic correlation.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) can have widely varying characteristics under different deployments, and previous studies show that the characteristics impact the behavior of routing protocols for MANETs. To deploy applications successfully in MANETs, application developers need to comprehend the potential behavior of any underlying protocol used. In mobile networks, a major component of many of these routing protocols is some form of flooding, which facilitates message delivery over an entire network in a relatively reliable way. Several MANET protocols use flooding to support the distribution of route request messages as well as delivering broadcast packets. Therefore, to developers of applications for MANETs, a major task in understanding MANET protocols is estimating the performance of flooding in a given operating environment. In this work, we develop an analytical model for the delay experienced in flooding a message. We model the one hop delay of a flooding message in MANETs in terms of parameters that can be acquired either from a system configuration or from application designers.

In this paper, we propose a grid-based approach to providing the maximum coverage for a mobile target in a hybrid sensor network. The maximum coverage is achieved by moving mobile sensor nodes in the network based on a distributed method. To minimize total movement cost, the proposed approach needs to solve the following problems: the minimum number of mobile sensor nodes used for healing coverage holes and the best matching between the mobile sensor nodes and the coverage holes. In the proposed approach, the above two problems are first transformed into the modified circle covering and minimum cost flow problems, respectively. Finally, we perform simulation experiments to show the effectiveness of proposed approach in providing coverage for a mobile target.

Reliable storage supports different data sharing services, such as mobility and cryptographic key management and distributed naming. Mobile Ad hoc networks (MANETs) present issues in guaranteeing the consistency of data on concurrent read and write due to dynamism of nodes, the inexistence of a central control entity and support infrastructure. Probabilistic quorum systems, as PAN (Probabilistic Ad Hoc Quorum System), were designed for MANETs to improve the efficiency of data replication by relaxing consistency constraints, comprising a set of quorums with relaxed intersections among themselves. PAN ensures high probability of consistency between replicated data by an asymmetric quorum construction and by a gossip-based multicast protocol. However, it does not consider the presence of malicious or selfish nodes in its operations. This work assesses the impact of lack of cooperation, timeout and data manipulation attacks against PAN. Simulation results show that PAN is vulnerable to these attacks, particularly, the data manipulation attack.

Seaweb is an underwater acoustic wide-area network connecting autonomous, distributed nodes. This paper presents a network discovery process that enables such a field of spontaneously deployed, ad hoc nodes to auto-configure network routes. The process is initialized as nodes in the network are discovered, link distances measured, and optimal routes chosen from among candidate routes according to comparative evaluation of a cost function. The implemented network discovery process is tested with computer simulation and demonstrated at sea with a network of 19 nodes. The resultant network routes obtained upon completion of the ad hoc network discovery process are compared with those derived from Dijkstra's algorithm. It is concluded that the network discovery process always produces a shortest-path route from a master node to each discovered node in the network. Sensitivity analysis on the route cost evaluation function is performed.

When stricken by a catastrophic natural disaster, the efficiency of disaster response operation is very critical to life saving. However, communication systems, including cellular networks, were usually crashed due to various causes making the coordination among a large number of disorganized disaster response workers extremely difficult. Unfortunately, rapid deployment of many existing emergency communication systems relies on a good transportation system, which is usually not available in a catastrophic natural disaster. We designed a multi-hop walkie-talkie-like communication system based on P2Pnet platform, which is a MANET P2P network constructed using volunteers' laptops. This system can support a large number of voluntary workers in the early hours of a catastrophic natural disaster when external assistance is blocked by the paralyzed transportation system. The multi-hop version can help to bypass the obstacles that block face-to-face communication as well as direct WiFi communication links. We wish to stimulate the research on the emergency communication systems that is inexpensive and easy to deploy for future catastrophic natural disasters.

Wireless Mesh networks are cost-efficient medium-scale networks that have the potential to serve as an infrastructure for advanced location-based services. As a basis for these services we present a routing algorithm that allows to address intuitive symbolic coordinates. This algorithm is based on a proactively maintained geographic routing structure that mimics the structure of a symbolic location model. Message forwarding is done greedily along short paths defined by a symbolic location model and if this fails, through an hierarchical overlay network built by selected mesh routers. We show how a geocast communication mechanism that allows to send messages to all hosts within a specific location can be implemented with this routing algorithm. In extensive evaluations we show that a low proactive routing overhead allows to achieve high message delivery rates even in case of mobility. Moreover, we show that the paths achieved are only 25% longer than the theoretic optimal paths for a wide range of simulation settings.
