Dense collection of tiny Sensor Nodes (SNs), equipped with a variety of sensors are able to sense events, compute and communicate the estimations to the end user, form a distributed Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The advances in WSNs have made it plausible to appraise critical aspects of object tracking WSNs that are continuous monitoring of object track and fault tolerance. This paper presents probabilistic performance evaluation of clustering, redundancy reduction, target tracking and fault tolerance phases of Fault-Tolerant Target Tracking (FTTT) protocol. This type of formal modeling with limited number of SNs helps to plan a scalable network with specific constraints related to the application, for example, object tracking quality, life time of the network, energy consumption, latency, QoS and network throughput.

Space-time focusing transmission in impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) systems resorts to the large number of resolvable paths to reduce the inter-pulse interference as well as the multiuser interference, and to simplify the receiver design. In this paper, we study the spatial user capacity of IR-UWB systems with space-time focusing transmission where the users are randomly distributed. We will derive the power distribution of the aggregate interference and investigate the collision probability between the desired focusing peak signal and interference signals. The closed-form expressions of the upper and lower bound of the outage probability and the spatial user capacity are obtained. Analysis results reveal the connections between the spatial user capacity and various system and channel parameters such as antenna gain, frame length, path loss factor, and multipath delay spread, which provide design guidelines for IR-UWB networks.

Monitoring widespread environmental fields is a complex task that is of great use in many areas, such as building models of natural phenomenon: e.g. moisture in a crop field, oil reservoirs, etc. A successful monitoring of such spatio-temporally distributed fields hinges upon the use of wireless sensor networks which, through their distributed nature, allow for an effective adaptive sampling procedure to gather the statistical information necessary for field density estimation. The adaptive nature of the sampling procedure used embodies a strategy which selects the next sampling location based on the gathered statistical information, and which evolves with past measurements. This paper presents a novel distributed multi-robot "Adaptive sampling algorithm", which is an extension of the algorithm proposed earlier for complex field estimation using a single-robot only. New formulations of sensor fusion in a centralized, decentralized, federated-decentralized, and distributed sensor network are presented for field density estimation, and not just cloud boundary determination. A comparison of the various computational loads involved is included. Simulation results show that adding an efficient partitioning of the sampling area and parallel multi-robot sampling improves the field reconstruction time. With N robots, more than an N-fold reduction in the number of sampling times is observed. The federated and distributed scheme also leads to an improved communication and computational efficiency.

Probabilistic routing protocols in Delay Tolerant networks (DTN) make use of the mobility history in its prediction when making a forwarding decision. However, the predictive property can expose DTN to more advanced security threats. One security threat is enhanced flooding attack which can be more penetrative if properly planned as malicious nodes have prior knowledge of their victims. However, through the investigation of various flooding techniques, we propose to capitalize this very probabilistic feature to confine and mitigate flooding attacks through a queuing mechanism based on this probabilistic feature. To demonstrate our concept, we formulated a solution for Probabilistic Routing Protocol using History of Encounters and Transitivity (PRoPHET), which is a routing protocol in DTN. The PRoPHET protocol along with our proposed queuing policy does not require global knowledge about the network, and hence is a distributed scheme suitable for DTN.

We describe a wide area camera network on a campus setting, the SCALLOPSNet (Scalable Large Optical Sensor Network). It covers with about 100 stationary cameras an expansive area that can be divided into three distinct regions: inside a building, along urban paths, and in a remote natural reserve. Some of these regions lack connections for power and communications, and, therefore, necessitate wireless, battery-powered camera nodes. In our exploration of available solutions, we found existing smart cameras to be insufficient for this task, and instead designed our own battery-powered camera nodes that communicate using 802.11b. The camera network uses the Internet Protocol on either wired or wireless networks to communicate with our central cluster, which runs cluster and cloud computing infrastructure. These frameworks like Apache Hadoop are well suited for large distributed and parallel tasks such as many computer vision algorithms. We discuss the design and implementation details of this network, together with the challenges faced in deploying such a large scale network on a research campus. We plan to make the datasets available for researchers in the computer vision community in the near future.

The ability to track individual objects is essential to many aspects of our modern life such as product recalls and anti-counterfeiting. As a non-line-of-sight technology, radio-frequency identification (RFID) provides an effective way to record movements of objects and has recently emerged as an enabling technology for traceability applications. Unfortunately, realizing RFID traceability networks in large-scale, distributed environments brings many fundamental research and development issues. In particular, applications will generate an unprecedented amount of transactions and data that requires novel approaches not only in RFID data processing and management, but infrastructure and architecture design. In this paper, we describe our approach for realizing a scalable RFID traceability network, which can efficiently and effectively support traceability applications. With a novel data model, traceability applications can share data across independent organizations in a peer-to-peer fashion.

Structured peer-to-peer network organize nodes into an overlay network. The distributed hash table is used to lookup the resource. In these systems, data is associated with keys and each node is responsible for a subset of the keys. The distance between two adjacent peers on the overlay network may be very far on IP network so that the network access speed is greatly reduced. To solve the problem, a two-layer P2P system is proposed. In the system, each node has a peer identifier and an area identifier. All nodes, who have the same area identifier, gather to an area P2P subnet. In the way, these nodes, which exist in the same subnet, are geographical neighbor nodes. When a node wants to get a resource, it executes the query in its subnet at first. The network delay of a hop is less than that of neighbor nodes in the layout network. So the performance is improved.

With the rapid advances in communication and networking, especially in Grid technique, an increasing number of applications will involve computing systems. This article focus that how to schedule system resources in reason and explore the dynamic scheduling method to the parallel tasks in the federation. According to task scheduling of content and objectives in the simulation grid, the HLA federate managements is reformed. The dynamic schedule method based on multi-agent is propose and schedule framework is built, on this basis migration method is designed which based on federation members. And using UML designs migration process. Taking the air-to-ground warfare simulation system as an example, Simulation results verify that the method is feasible, and obviously the method could make contribution to enhance the quotients of using resource and construct the large-scale military simulation applications in simulation.

We present a Many-core Approach to Reconfigurable computing (MARC), enabling efficient high-performance computing for applications expressed using parallel programming models such as OpenCL. The MARC system exploits abundant special FPGA resources such as distributed block memories and DSP blocks to implement complete single-chip high efficiency many-core micro architectures. The key benefits of MARC are that it (i) allows programmers to easily express parallelism through the API defined in a high-level programming language, (ii) supports coarse-grain multithreading and dataflow-style fine-grain threading while permitting bit-level resource control, and (iii) greatly reduces the effort required to re-purpose the hardware system for different algorithms or different applications. A MARC prototype machine with 48 processing nodes was implemented using a Virtex-5 (XCV5LX155T-2) FPGA for a well known Bayesian network inference problem. We compare the runtime of the MARC machine against a manually optimized implementation. With fully synthesized application-specific processing cores, our MARC machine comes within a factor of 3 of the performance of a fully optimized FPGA solution but with a considerable reduction in development effort and a significant increase in retarget ability.

This paper presents a new method to improve the quality of man machine communication in distributed systems and networks, in which a significant portion of traffic is multimedia traffic. Method is to use a soft short packets and packet multimedia services. Justified the choice of service time as a parameter evaluating the effectiveness of proposed solutions and an appropriate mathematical model. Using simulation studies determined the intensity of information flow, for which method is appropriate.
