We propose an algorithm for maximizing the lifetime of a wireless sensor network when there is a mobile sink and the underlying application can tolerate some degree of delay in delivering the data to the sink. Our main contribution is that the algorithm is distributed, and in addition, mostly uses local information. Such an algorithm can be implemented by parallel and/or distributed execution and the overhead of message passing is low. It is also possible to embed the algorithm into a network protocol so that the senor nodes and the sink can run it directly as part of the network operation. Our second contribution is that we give a proof of the algorithm's optimality and the boundedness of the queue sizes, both in the long-run average sense. The proof is based on analyzing a Lyapunov drift.

In the design of MAC layer protocols for wireless sensor networks, many factors including energy-saving, simple in operation, reducing transmission collisions, transmission efficiency, load balancing, and support for routing, etc. should be considered. This paper proposes a new MAC layer protocol called DMAS with which sensor nodes operate according to a predefined periodic schedule named a superframe. In the superframe, the time for a sensor node to become active/sleep and to transmit/receive data is pre-determined. So, a sensor node has only to determine the starting time of the superframe, and then, it will work according to the schedule. After all the nodes have determined their individual superframe starting time, the topology of the network is also determined in the same time. That is, routing paths for data gathering are also determined. The topology of the network is constructed as trees. In the topology, we limit the number of children of each node to three in order to balance the data gathering load of all nodes. The design and implementation of the proposed MAC protocol are all accomplished in the ns-2 simulation environment. In the environment, wireless packet collision problem and transmission time costs are fully took into account, so the experimental results could be treated as practical outcomes. Our experiments show that the proposed protocol is efficient in energy-saving, topology creation, and data dissemination.

Large-scale High Performance computing (HPC) systems continue to be designed and constructed to extend performance beyond Petascales using monolithic, cluster, and distributed architectures and emerging multi-core Central Processing Unit (CPU) technologies. As these machines grow so too does the size and variety of applications that run on them. Yet power management and interconnection performance are of great and mounting concern, and to date, the understanding of HPC subsystem interactions and their relationships to power efficiency remains less than desirable. Furthermore, Executive Order 13423 was issued in January of 2007 in an effort to ensure that Federal agencies operate in an environmentally, economically, and fiscally sound manner. It mandates a 30% reduction in energy intensity (MBTUs per square foot) of government facilities in the FY06-15 timeframe using FY03 as a baseline. Two major drawbacks hinder their ability to sustain consistent run time and energy efficient performance: (1) major subsystems interact with each other, often at the expense of unpredictable application run time and energy consumption, and (2) increased power density of these machines complicates the space, power, and cooling problem, resulting in partial or full system down time, further exacerbating run time unpredictability. We believe that one fundamental reason for the above limitations is the operational isolation of loosely coupled subsystems. While the development of subsystems in isolation has been the dominant model for decades, it is inherently unsuitable for ensuring consistent and sustainable systemic performance. We propose that the collection of HPC sub-systems, including the set of running applications must be collaborative in nature, and as such the HPC systems full potential is limited by subsystem isolation and autonomous actions to improve their individual subsystem performance. Data aggregation is a primitive operation in wireless sensor network applications. This paper focuses on data aggregation scheduling problem to minimize the latency. An efficient distributed method is proposed to structure a collision-free schedule for parallel data aggregation in WSNs. We prove that the latency of the aggregation schedule generated by our algorithm is at most 4Δ+15R-16 time-slots where R is the network radius and Δ is the maximum node degree in the communication graph of the original network.

Task scheduling algorithms are designed mostly with the sole goal of minimizing makespan (completion time). Almost all research works related to this kind of algorithms do not pay much attention to energy consumption. In this paper, we investigate the energy issue in task scheduling particularly on high-performance computing systems (HCSs). We propose a new island-based bi-objective hybrid algorithm that takes into account, not only makespan, but also energy consumption. The proposed approach uses dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to minimize energy consumption. Our study provides the significance and potential of DVS. The proposed approach is powerful as it profits from the cooperative paradigm of the island model. Indeed, the obtained results show that our approach outperforms previous scheduling methods, in terms of energy consumption, by a noticeable margin. The obtained schedules are also shorter, in terms of completion time, than those of other algorithms.

This paper presents a simple but resilient method to suppress copyright violations among the content uploaded onto peer-to-peer (P2P) video sharing services, and is especially designed for consumer generated media (CGM). Encryption is a good way to block the circulation of illegal content. However, if the encryption key is caught by a malicious node in the P2P network, the ''denial of deletion'' ability offered by this key may make it difficult to stop the circulation of the content. To solve this problem, we propose a method to divide the encryption key into partial keys using the secret sharing scheme, and allowing them to be distributed into different nodes. Different from existing commercial P2P content distribution systems, this system is more scalable because the keys are managed in a distributed fashion. Regardless of the size of the P2P network, the probability of the encryption key being illegally used after the deletion operation for the target content is less than 0.1 even when more than 10% of the nodes are malicious.

The paper presents a new system used for starting the diesel engine of the LDH1250HP locomotive, for improving its performances, reliability and availability. The system developed uses rapid release storage devices, a power electronic unit and a computer linked with all the distributed system elements, by using Ethernet bus. Also, the paper describes an intelligent data acquisition system integrated with the starting system and developed to monitor the electrical parameters of the LDH1250HP locomotive. The proposed monitoring system allows evaluating the electrical locomotive parameters and the overall system performances. The details of implementation and the experimental results are also presented. The technical implementation allows a significant reduction of exploitation cost and carbon footprint of the locomotive.

We describe a general engineering method to compute a tighter bound on fiber-optic channel capacity and the optimum source distribution. This method first determines the conditional probability density functions of an optical fiber channel by evaluating histograms, or by instantons or edgeworth expansion approach. Starting from any source distribution, we generate source and output sequences to estimate the information rate and calculate A-posteriori State-Transition Weight. The optimum source distribution is obtained by constrained stochastic Arimoto-Blahut algorithm. We apply the proposed methods on a 64 iterative polarization quantization source. The optimized capacity per single-polarization per channel is higher than achievable information rate. As the transmission distance increases the optimized distribution is changed from Gaussian-like distribution to non-Gaussian-like distribution. This is due to the fact that the nonlinear interaction of ASE noise and Kerr nonlinearities cannot be compensated for by back-propagation method.

McAfee SecurityCenter Firewall is one of the most popular security software installed on millions of Internet connected computers worldwide. ¿McAfee claims that if you have installed McAfee SecurityCentre with anti-virus and anti-spyware and Firewall version 9.3 then you always have the most current security to combat the ever-evolving threats on the Internet for the duration of the subscription¿. In this paper, we present our findings regarding the effectiveness of McAfee SecurityCentre software against one of the most popular distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, namely ping-flood attack on the computer which has McAfee SecurityCentre installed. The McAfee SecurityCentre software has an in built firewall which can be activated to control and filter the inbound/outbound traffic. It can also block the ping requests in order to stop or subside the ping based DDoS Attacks. To test the McAfee Security Centre software, we created the ping traffic in the controlled lab environment of Networking Research Lab here at The University of Texas-Pan American. It was found that the McAfee Firewall software itself was incurring DoS (denial of service) by completely exhausting the available memory resources during its operation of stopping the external ping attack.
