The chain join processing which combines records from two or more tables sequentially has been well studied in the centralized databases. However,it has seldom been discussed in the cloud computing era, and remains imperative to be solved, especially where structured (or relational) data are stored in a column (attribute) wise fashion in distributed file systems (e.g., Google File System) over hundreds of or even thousands of commodities PCs. In this paper, we propose a novel method for chain join processing, which is one of the common primitives in the cloud era for column-wise stored data analysis. By effectively selecting the dedicated records (tuples) for the chain join based on the information exploited within bipartite join graph, communication cost for record transmission could be reduced dramatically. A bushy tree structure is deployed to regulate the chain join sequence, which further reduces the number of intermediate results generated and transmitted, and explores higher parallelism in join processing, while results in more efficient join processing. Our extensive performance study confirms the effectiveness and efficiency of our methods.

BitTorrent occupies actually a dominant part of the Internet traffic for various applications. The protocol provides an efficient transport level but is devoid of real management and control layers. In this paper we propose a Service Provider network architecture based on BitTorrent protocol where Peer-to-Peer (P2P) peering traffic is reduced and P2P data transfer is sped up. We first add a Control/Management level to the original BitTorrent architecture provided by an entity called the hTracker that allows traffic portioning among Autonomous Systems (ASs). Secondly we propose a Context-Aware DHT (distributed Hash Table) algorithm that optimizes routing/lookup component based on network parameters and that generalizes the first contribution taking into consideration AS membership. Then the last contribution consists in optimizing BitTorrent transport level by applying FEC (Forward Error Correction) mechanism that speed up the download while maintaining interoperability. When the network presents a lack of resources the Service Provider can instantiate special FEC peers to overcome this deficiency. These contributions strive for an Service Provider Oriented Peer-to-peer (SPOP) architecture. The large-scale simulations show valuable results that validate the solution.

Self-organisation is frequently advocated as the solution for managing large, dynamic systems. distributed algorithms are implicitly designed for infinitely large problems, while small systems are regarded as being controllable using traditional, centralised approaches. Many real-world systems, however, do not fit conveniently into these “small” or “large” categories, resulting in a range of cases where the optimal solution is ambiguous. This difficulty is exacerbated by enthusiasts of either approach constructing problems that suit their preferred control architecture. We address this ambiguity by building an abstract model of task allocation in a community of specialised agents. We are inspired by the problem of work distribution in distributed satellite systems, but the model is also relevant to the resource allocation problems in distributed robotics, autonomic computing and wireless sensor networks. We compare the behaviour of a self-organising, market-based task allocation strategy to a classical approach that uses a central controller with global knowledge. The objective is not to prove one mechanism inherently superior to the other, instead we are interested in the regions of problem space where each of them dominates. Simulation is used to explore the trade-off between energy consumption and robustness in a system of intermediate size, with fixed communication costs and varying rates of component failure. We identify boundaries between regions in the parameter space where one or the other architecture will be favoured. This allows us to derive guidelines for system designers, thus contributing to the development of a disciplined approach to controlling distributed systems using self-organising mechanisms.

Traditionally, Markov models have been used to study multiserver systems using exhaustive or gated service. In addition, exhaustive-limited and gate-limited models have also been used in communication systems to reduce overall latency. Recently the authors have proposed a new Markov Chain approach to study gate-limited service. Multiqueue systems such as polling systems, in which the server serves various queues have also been extensively studied but as a separate branch of queueing theory. This paper proposes to describe multiqueue systems in terms of a new Markov Chain called the Zero-Server Markov Chain (ZSMC). The model is used to derive a formula for the waiting times in an exhaustive polling system. An intuitive result is obtained and this is used to develop an approximate method which works well over normal operational ranges.

Animals, such as squirrels, cause significant outages in overhead distribution systems. Models that would accurately estimate outages caused by animals would be very useful for utilities for year-end analysis of reliability performance of the distribution system. Large increase in outages caused by animals would require the utility to do further evaluation and take remedial actions. A two-layer Bayesian network model with Month-Type, Level of Fair Weather Days in the week, and Outage Level in the previous week as input and Outage Level in the week is presented in this paper for estimation of weekly animal-related outages. Results of different approaches for classification of inputs and output are presented, which are then compared to select the best classification of input and output variables for the model.

Free riding is among the fundamental issue that P2P systems are facing. Large populations, high turnover, asymmetry of interest, collusion, zero-cost identities, and traitors; makes this issue further challenging. To tackle these challenges we proposed a cluster based gossiping protocol for P2P system in order to overcome the “tragedy of common” or lack of cooperation (free riding) among nodes. Our System detects the selfish nodes in a system by maintaining a reputation index of the nodes. Cluster based gossiping is distributed supervision approach based on self organization of autonomic components. Through simulation, we show that our technique can drive a system to nearly optimal levels of cooperation.

The emulation of wireless nodes spatial position is a practice used by deployment engineers and network planners to analyze the characteristics of a network. In particular, nodes geolocation will directly impact factors such as connectivity, signals fidelity, and service quality. In literature, in addition to typical homogenous scattering, normal distribution is frequently used to model mobiles concentration in a cellular system. Moreover, Gaussian dropping is often considered as an effective placement method for airborne sensor deployment. Despite the practicality of this model, getting the network channel loss distribution still relies on exhaustive Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we argue the need for this inefficient approach and hence derived a generic and exact closed-form expression for the path-loss distribution density between a base-station and a network of nodes. Simulation was used to reaffirm the validity of the theoretical analysis using values from the new IEEE 802.20 standard.

In this paper, we introduce an improved self-adaptive localization algorithm based on DV-HOP for the node localization in wireless sensor network. We firstly divide the sensing area into several small regions according to the density of unknown nodes. Then, the beacon nodes are distributed within the sensing area in a reasonable manner, based on DV-HOP algorithm and combined with RSSI. The measured errors of estimated location in beacon nodes are considered as the adjusted values and broadcasted to the adjacent nodes. Based on the broadcasted adjusted values, the unknown nodes adjust their relative information of position. Simulation results demonstrate that the accuracy of node localization is greatly increased with the proposed algorithm.

Reliability calculation is the most important concern in designing and planning of distribution systems, which is considered, in terms of the economical concerns, with minimal interruption of customers. Storage devices are usually used for storing the electric energy while the electric price is low, and deliver their reserved energy when it has financial profit. Also, it could be effective for decreasing the average duration and frequency of outages in load points. In this paper, a method for evaluation of average annual energy not supplied (ENS) for a radial distribution system with DG units and storage devices is presented. Besides, the genetic algorithm (GA) is used to find the optimal capacity and the best location for storage device in order to minimize ENS and installation cost simultaneously. The effectiveness of this method is examined on a real distribution network.

Mobile ad-hoc Grid is one of the modern distributed systems that have been introduced until now. It combines traditional grid capabilities with ad-hoc network flexibilities. Service discovery is one of important challenges in this environment. In this paper, we focused on hybrid service discovery protocol and proposed a reliable service discovery scheme based on neighbors communication link quality in each zone. Service query messages in our proposed algorithm are directed to neighbor nodes selectively along reliable links. Reliable link are distinguished by power of advertisement messages signal which are send between nodes in a zone. We show by mathematical proof and simulation that compared to traditional hybrid protocol, our reliable hybrid protocol achieves fewer messages overhead and better success service delivery ratio.
