Peer-to-peer (P2P) network is a robust and distributed architecture of sharing resources. Recently, several approaches have been proposed for P2P network over MANET. The existing approaches for unstructured P2P network (Gnutella) over MANET do not consider the merging of P2P networks which occurs due to nodes' limited radio range and their mobility. This paper designs three approaches to handle the merging of P2P networks for unstructured P2P network over mobile ad hoc network (MANET). These approaches are implicit application-layer (IAL), explicit application-layer (EAL) and explicit cross-layer (EXL) approaches. In IAL approach, the following property of Gnutella is used to merge P2P networks. In Gnutella, when the number of neighbor peers of a peer P drops lower than the lower bound value, the peer P starts to connect with other new neighbor peers. So during this phase in Gnutella over MANET, a peer may connect with neighbor peers of another P2P network partition. In EAL approach, one peer is used as a root-peer which identifies the P2P network. So when a peer detects more than one root-peer in the network, the peer invokes merging operation. In EXL approach, an address auto-configuration protocol is extended to merge the unstructured P2P networks over MANET. By simulation, we show that overall EXL approach outperforms other two approaches in term of routing overhead and false-negative ratio.

In this paper we present a case study for a design of a reliable body area network (BAN) for monitoring fire fighter rescue teams according to the requirements defined by the Berlin fire brigades. This case study considers all layers of the system, starting from the hardware, going through the operating system and data handling middleware, ending at the application layer. The main parts of the proposed solution are the tinyDSM middleware and a new prototyping hardware platform for wireless sensor nodes--IHPNode. The resulting BAN shall be a part of a larger system, where the BANs are connected via an additional multi-hop network to the control centre. Even if this connection fails, the BAN is able to take autonomous decisions. This system is developed within the FeuerWhere project.

In this paper we present a new cross-platform approach for video game delivery in wired and wireless local networks. The developed 3D streaming and video streaming approaches enable users to access video games on set top boxes and handheld devices that natively are not capable to run PC games. During the development of the distributed gaming system we have faced a number of challenges and problems posed by the hardware and network limitations. In order to solve these problems we have developed a multilevel testing methodology which is based on user assessment and technical measures for the system under development. In this paper we focus on the technical measures and instrumentation that we use for the system's performance measurement and testing. The benefits of our testing methodology are demonstrated through examples from the development and testing work.

Partitioning a large network into a connected hierarchy is a proven technique for scalability, manageability, and reliability. Although a significant body of works is devoted to this area of interest, a reference to partitioning schemes where each partition remains 2-connected is missing. In optical networks, a failure of a physical component disrupts multiple logical links that share the component. Such a shared risk link group (SRLG) failure is more common than a single link or node failure in the logical topology. In this paper, we introduce the k-SRLG-connected partitioning problem for optical networks, where k ≥ 1. A logical topology is said to be k-SRLG-connected if its nodes remain connected upon any k-1 SRLG failures. We particularly focus on k = 2. Without 2-SRLG-connectivity, a partition can neither provide protection by allocating two SRLG-disjoint paths, nor provide restoration after a failure. Moreover, a single SRLG failure can split the partition into multiple disconnected components, resulting in the failure of the hierarchical network organization itself. We show that finding a 2-SRLG-connected partitioning for a given network is NP-complete and provide a distributed heuristic approach. Simulation results verify that the proposed 2-SRLG-connected partitioning scheme performs better than traditional 1-connected partitioning approaches with regard to survivability and system stability.

Recent advances in mobile, wireless, and sensor technologies provide new possibilities for supporting learning activities that can be spatially distributed and incorporate different physical and environmental sensory data. In this paper, we present our technical efforts in relation to the design and implementation of mobile and web applications that integrate sensory data used to support inquiry-based science learning. In order to test the validity of our solution and its functionality and novelty, we conducted a prototype experiment with high school students in the field of environmental sciences. The initial outcomes presented in this paper point towards the potential benefits of using sensor and mobile technologies with real-time geo-positioned data and visualizations, which may increase students' engagement, enabling them to conduct scientific inquiries and analyses in new ways.

We introduce a novel method for the consolidation of unorganized point clouds with noise,outliers,non-uniformities as well as sharp *** method is feature preserving,in the sense that given an initial estimation of normal,it is able to recover the sharp features contained in the original geometric data which are usually contaminated during the acquisition. The key ingredient of our approach is a weighting term from normal space as an effective complement to the recently proposed consolidation ***,a normal mollification step is employed during the consolidation to get normal information respecting sharp features besides the position of each point. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world scanned models validate the ability of our approach in producing denoised, evenly distributed and feature preserving point clouds,which are preferred by most surface reconstruction methods.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are distributed systems where no central authority rules the behavior of the individual peers. A typical application is the sharing of files of some class (movies, music, ...), our object of interest here. These systems relay on the voluntary participation of the peers to help each other. However, it is not uncommon to find users that have initiated a file transfer and decide to leave the system before the end of the download. This is a particularly harmful behavior due to the resources, such as bandwidth or energy, wasted in such an aborted process. This negative effect is amplified when the system's conditions are such that the peers are not downloading at the maximum capacity, i.e., the downloading bandwidth is underutilized. This is because in these conditions, there are not enough peers uploading the file, and a part of the bandwidth is wasted on peers that do not share their resources to the network once they leave the system. In this paper, a priority scheme is presented for a BitTorrent-based P2P network where the peers that are more likely to remain longer in the system are served first, over peers that are statistically more likely to abort the download. By giving priority to peers that are likely to go through the complete file download, the successful download rate for the peers that remain longer in the system is increased and the resources of the system are better utilized. The proposed scheme is analyzed by means of different models, in order to find the steady-state performance of the network.

Recent technological advances in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) have enabled the design of lowcost, lightweight sensor nodes capable of sensing, processing and communicating different types of data. These tiny sensor nodes leverage the ideas found in Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) and this has lead to a large number of applications in the health sector. For example, telemonitoring is used to track, monitor and manage patient psychophysical data and help in the administration of drugs in hospitals. In this paper, we present a novel framework that exploits these ideas further, where body area WSNs and gaming have been combined to assist in physiotherapy treatments for patients with physical disabilities or ailments. The proposed framework has three main components, the body area WSN, the game, and the data acquisition manager. The body WSN is fixed to the patient's body and data is collected and stored in real-time. This data in parallel is feed directly into the control services allowing gaming objects, i.e. virtual representations of patient's, to control by physically moving his/her body parts. Whilst the patient plays the game, data is regularly collected from body sensor nodes. This allows real-time data from sensor nodes to be used by the game to adjust game levels according to the medical status of the patient. This allows treatments to be automatically adapted to maximise physiotherapy treatments and speed up recovery. In this paper, we present a working prototype that successfully demonstrates the applicability of our approach.

A torus topology is widely used in multicomputer design because of its many features. This paper presents an efficient path-based multicast algorithm in wormhole-routed 2D torus networks. The proposed algorithm can achieve a high degree of parallelism and low communication latency over a wide range of traffic loads. Since, it relies on a new approach that divides the destinations into many groups; hence the name Ready Groups (RG for short) algorithm. The RG algorithm relies on a new approach that divides the 2D torus network into multiple subnetworks to nearly balance the communication load in different parts of the torus. The RG algorithm requires only two start-ups irrespective of the destination nodes involved and most of the destination nodes receive the multicast message in parallel. From the destination groups in each subnetwork, the nearest destination node to the source node is selected to become a leader. In the first startup, the source node sends the message to the leaders. In the second start-up, every leader in turn sends the received message to the rest of the destinations in its own group. A routing function is designed and is used as a basis for the RG algorithm. Results from extensive simulations on different torus networks are discussed to compare the RG algorithm with previous algorithms.

Since Internet live video services provide media streaming over unmanaged networks, service cost and QoS (Quality-of-Service) are important factors for commercial deployment. For this open Internet content delivery, the CDN-P2P (Content Delivery Network-Peer-to-Peer) hybrid architecture can be an appropriate solution in terms of scalability and cost. In this live streaming system, lots of P2P (Peer-to-Peer) keeps the random unstructured graph for data delivery resilience even with node join and leave dynamics. However, since a node pulls required data from nearby peers in the unstructured overlay due to delivery graph elasticity, pull-based unstructured P2P live streaming services experience significant playback latency. In this paper, we propose a playback latency reduction method by limiting the radius of unstructured P2P in CDN-P2P hybrid architecture. Especially, we formulate this architecture as a BDMRST (Bounded-degree Minimum-radius Spanning Tree) problem and propose a distributed solution with slight modification of the gossip-based membership protocol. We also evaluate our proposed method with simulations.
