international Telecommunication Union identifies sustainability as a key capability of the future 6th Generation (6G) mobile communication system. To move towards a sustainable mobile network design in future, monitoring of energy consumption and energy efficiency in user service delivery is being discussed as a part of the 5th Generation (5G) mobile communication system standards. Several ongoing activities in Release 19 and 20 of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are focused on an energy-aware mobile network design. Energy awareness in 3GPP 5G and 6G network is envisaged to be supported by: (a) collecting energy-related information, e.g. energy consumption of the network functions, (b) exposing the information to users/third parties (application service providers), and (c) dynamically adjusting the quality of service to reduce energy consumption in networks. In this context, we review the latest standardization efforts in 3GPP on energy-aware mobile network design. Our main contribution is to highlight the challenges and open problems of an energy-aware mobile network design, and to propose a novel policy update mechanism. © 2025 IEEE.

Network Functions (NFs) in the 5th Generation (5G) mobile communication system face many security-related challenges. Usage of legacy interfaces/protocols is one of them. The Short Message Service Function (SMSF) in the 5G core is the key network function supporting the short message service (SMS) delivery over Non-Access Stratum (NAS) to User Equipment (UE). SMS over NAS is an old service, in existence since the 2nd Generation (2G) mobile communication systems. Therefore, the SMSF in 5G core may need to interface with legacy network elements/functions via non-service based (legacy) interfaces. Typically these legacy interfaces are based on Diameter and/or Mobile Application Part (MAP) protocols. It is essential to secure SMSF records and data (SMS) in transit over these legacy interfaces, as they may contain critical information such as UE identifiers, UE contexts and sensitive financial data. In this work, we present our contributions to 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)'s Release 19 5G standards, which include the security threats security-related requirements for SMSF's Diameter and MAP-based legacy interfaces as well as mechanisms to protect SMSF from these threats. These contributions were recently included in 3GPP 5G standards and Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements. © 2025 IEEE.

The integrated satellite-terrestrial network represents a pivotal direction in the evolution of sixth-generation mobile communication. It integrates the low latency, high capacity, and large-scale machine access characteristics of fifth-generation mobile network with the extensive coverage and robust stability of satellite systems. A key trend in the development of future integrated network systems will be the shared user of a unified frequency band between satellites and terrestrial networks. To address this, the paper considers a cognitive satellite-terrestrial network scenario, where satellite networks serve as the primary network and terrestrial networks as the secondary. The paper applies deep reinforcement learning for multidimensional resource optimization, aiming to enhance user service quality while alleviating frequency resource scarcity. This paper delves into resource allocation methods of cognitive integrated satellite-terrestrial network based on deep reinforcement learning. The paper jointly optimizes the beam patterns, bandwidth allocation, terrestrial base station power allocation, and user association for low-orbit satellites within the system, thereby improving network throughput and ensuring user delay fairness. Initially, this paper systematically models the cognitive satellite-terrestrial network and formulated optimization objectives encompassing throughput and user delay fairness. Then a multi-agent based deep Q-network method was introduced to achieve these objectives. Through simulations, this paper validates that the proposed algorithm outperforms traditional resource allocation algorithms in terms of throughput and user latency fairness. © The Authors.

Enhanced Machine-Type communications (eMTC) is a low-power wide-area network technology introduced by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). The eMTC devices are of low cost and can operate in poor signal coverage areas. To ensure successful transmission in such scenarios, 3GPP has adopted the repetition of data over time. In 4G-LTE/5G-NR, the resource allocation and link adaptation are one-dimensional problems where the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is either incremented or decremented over time. However, in eMTC, there exists a two-dimensional problem, as the base station can update either MCS or repetitions. Further, the base station has to consider the devices' limited transmit power while allocating resources in the uplink. An optimal selection of these values has a significant impact on the network capacity and the devices' battery power. Motivated by this, we present novel resource allocation, link adaptation, and scheduling algorithms for the eMTC uplink. We show that the proposed algorithms result in a suitable selection of resource blocks, MCS, repetition levels, and link adaptation. To reduce the computation load, we also propose a low-complexity sub-optimal scheduling algorithm. Through system-level simulations, we show that all the proposed algorithms significantly outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms. © 2022 IEEE.

The Full Dimension-MIMO (FD-MIMO) technology is capable of achieving huge improvements in network throughput with simultaneous connectivity of a large number of mobile wireless devices, unmanned aerial vehicles, and the Internet of Things (IoT). With large antennae at the base station, an enhanced multi-user transmission is performed to increase the capacity of physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH). However, the current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications of Long Term Evolution (LTE) do not allow the base station to perform any beamforming techniques for the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH). The PDCCH capacity dictates the number of users scheduled in a subframe, and thus, the PDCCH limits the cell capacity. Motivated by this, we propose a novel beamformed PDCCH (BF-PDCCH) design for LTE which strictly adheres to the 3GPP specifications. With just software-based changes at the base station, the proposed design significantly enhances the PDCCH capacity. The proposed design uses the sounding reference signals (SRS) transmitted in the uplink to decide the best beam for a user, and then ingeniously schedules the users in PDCCH. Since the performance of the proposed BF-PDCCH heavily relies on this SRS reception, we model the SRS channel estimation errors while evaluating the performance of the proposed BF-PDCCII. Through system-level simulations, we show that the proposed design achieves significant network throughput, and outperforms the current state of art algorithms and also the existing 3GPP schemes.

Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) is a low power wide area network technology introduced by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in Release 13 specifications. The NB-IoT aims at providing cellular connectivity to low cost, low throughput, delay-tolerant devices, and hence, is a key technol ogy for smart connected living. The NB-IoT specifications continue to evolve as part of 5G New Radio (NR), and the technology is expected to co-exist with 5G NR. A transmission bandwidth of 180 KHz is required to deploy the NB-IoT. In NB-IoT, the duration of the physical downlink control channel (NPDCCH) and the physical downlink shared channel (NPDSCH) changes dynamically. When the base station broadcasts the NPDCCH region, all the active NB-IoT devices try to decode it. Hence, to reduce the power consumption of the NB-IoT devices, more number of NB-IoT devices have to be scheduled in each scheduling attempt. For each payload in NPDCCH, there is a respective payload in NPDSCH. Thus, a base station should schedule the devices simultaneously in both NPDCCH and NPDSCH to reduce the resource wastage. The time-frequency resources in NB-IoT are limited and valuable. Further, the NB-IoT devices have low battery power constraint. Thus, scheduling the devices by considering the above constraints has a significant impact on the NB-IoT system performance. Motivated by this, we propose a joint scheduling algorithm for both NPDCCH and NPDSCH. We also define performance metrics to evaluate the impact of the proposed scheduler. With system-level simulations, we show that the proposed scheduler significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art algorithms.

Recently, with the widespread application of mobile communication devices, fingerprint identification is the most prevalent in all types of mobile computing. While they bring a huge convenience to our lives, the resulting security and privacy issues have caused widespread concern. Fraudulent attack using forged fingerprint is one of the typical attacks to realize illegal intrusion. Thus, fingerprint liveness detection (FLD) for True or Fake fingerprints is very essential. This paper proposes a novel fingerprint liveness detection method based on broad learning with uniform local binary pattern (ULBP). Compared to convolutional neural networks (CNN), training time is drastically reduced. Firstly, the region of interest of the fingerprint image is extracted to remove redundant information. Secondly, texture features in fingerprint images are extracted via ULBP descriptors as the input to the broad learning system (BLS). ULBP reduces the variety of binary patterns of fingerprint features without losing any key information. Finally, the extracted features are fed into the BLS for training. The BLS is a flat network, which transfers and places the original input as a mapped feature in feature nodes, generalizing the structure in augmentation nodes. Experiments show that in Livdet 2011 and Livdet 2013 datasets, the average training time is about 1 s and the performance of identifying real and fake fingerprints is effect. Compared to other advanced models, our method is faster and more miniature. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Convolutional Neural networks are a very powerful Deep Learning structure used in image processing, object classification and segmentation. They are very robust in extracting features from data and largely used in several domains. Nonetheless, they require a large number of training datasets and relations between features get lost in the Max-pooling step, which can lead to a wrong classification. Capsule networks(CapsNets) were introduced to overcome these limitations by extracting features and their pose using capsules instead of neurons. This technique shows an impressive performance in one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional datasets as well as in sparse datasets. In this paper, we present an initial understanding of CapsNets, their concept, structure and learning algorithm. We introduce the progress made by CapsNets from their introduction in 2011 until 2020. We compare different CapsNets series architectures to demonstrate strengths and challenges. Finally, we quote different implementations of Capsule networks and show their robustness in a variety of domains. This survey provides the state-of-theartof Capsule networks and allows other researchers to get a clear view of this new field. Besides, we discuss the open issues and the promising directions of future research, which may lead to a new generation of CapsNets. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2021.
