Distributed systems usually provide services with varying criticalities. Failures of core services lead to catastrophic consequences to the system. Maintaining system core services' availability with limited resources has become a challenging issue, especially when system operates in an adversary environment and face malicious under attack. This paper discusses the attacker-defender problem and analyzes how to allocate resources to maximize system availability, especially the core services availability. In our model, the defender seeks to maintain maximum system availability for a given period of time, and does so by distributing defensive resources to component protection enhancement, creation of redundant components, and camouflaged components deployment. We assume that the attacker has no knowledge about the system configuration, and hence randomly attacks different nodes in the system. We formulate this attacker-defender problem as a defender's optimization problem and present an algorithm that optimally allocates system resource to achieve maximum system availability. © 2011 IEEE.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are remotely piloted or self-piloted aircraft that are capable of flight without any on-board operator and can carry cameras, sensors, communications equipment or other payloads. UAVs have been used in a reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering role, including combat and rescue missions. This paper describes development and implementation of remote manual control system for a UAV. The paper includes design of manual control of air vehicle to achieve the desired target using a joystick and engine vibrations analysis. XBee-PRO 900 XSC OEM RF modules are used with extended-range, with 900 MHz embedded wireless system, providing end-point connectivity. The wireless transmitter and receiver pairs are used for data communication link between the ground station and the receiver on the vehicle. The manual control system is developed in a PC based system reducing the cost of overall system. Microsoft Visual Basic language is used for this control system. © 2011 IEEE.

Base on RS and GIS, 1993, 2000, 2007 and 2009 TM images of Tangshan Nanhu Wetland are taken as the data source, Landscape characteristics and change are studied. The knowledge discovery and feature extraction on the basis of traditional classification method of the remote sensing pictures are discussed. Multi-level classification method is used in monitoring of Tangshan Nanhu Wetland area land cover. This method is superior to the classifying device of single routine. In this paper, Tangshan Nanhu Wetland Landscape change is obtained by using multi-level classification method dealing with Tangshan Nanhu Wetland region remote sensing images. The study shows that with the rapid economic development and urbanization, great changes of land use have taken place in Nanhu Wetland area during 1993-2009. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to meet the needs of high-performance and open CNC (computer numerical control) system, first of all, a variety of task features and the real-time response requirements of various tasks in the entire data processing of the CNC system are analyzed in-depth. Then, the data hungry problem in the existing architecture of CNC system is pointed out when the system is running on high speed and high precision processing. On the basis of this, a solution mechanism is proposed that the related task units of the CNC system must be further broken down and the task unit which involves the function of decoding and data transmission could be designed as an independent process or thread that has a fixed implementation cycle. At the same time the special scheduling mechanism provided by the Real-time operating system to improve the implementation of priority, which makes the data of decoding be transmitted to the underlying module uninterruptedly. Thus, the system performance is improved overall. Finally, the experiments results verify that the proposed method is reasonable and correct. © 2011 IEEE.

In recent years more and more cities are planning to construct crime preventing systems in order to reduce the loss caused by risks. There are many kinds of crime preventing systems with different variety and price in the market so far. It is the problem that each decision-maker faces jointly that how to select a crime preventing system for a city which would be a perfect fit. From the stand point of decision-makers, this paper proposed an investment decision-making model for the construction of crime preventing systems. This model measures the quality of a crime prevention system through expected monetary values of the economic loss caused by risks. This article also introduced two decision-making methods, which were optimistic rule and pessimistic rule. Finally this paper proved the model reasonable through an actual application. © 2011 IEEE.

The identification of temperature filed of monitored region is one of the key steps for the energy efficiency management in intelligent building. In this paper, the identification of temperature field in monitored region is formalized as one optimization problem. With the formalization, a feed forward neural network is used to identify the temperature field of monitored region in an intelligent building. To improve the performance of the identification model, input data of the desired neural network is normalized with minimum - maximum method as middle result and the normalization image of the input data is the stereographic projection of the middle result. To test the performance of our proposed identification model, temperature matrix for the infrared photograph is used in our experiment. BP and RBF neural network is used as the desired neural network. Experiment results show that the performance of BP based temperature field identification model running with data preprocessed by stereographic projection and minimum - maximum method for the identification of temperature field in monitored region is better. © 2011 IEEE.

Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) is the net pressure gradient causing blood flow to the brain. It must be maintained within narrow limits because minute fluctuations in pressure could cause brain tissue to become ischemic or could raise intracranial pressure (ICP). In this paper, two types of transducers were proposed to measure the CPP from conscious rats. One transducer was manufactured with a pressure sensor within a screw cylindrical shell;it was made with stainless steel to allow for easier insertion of the sensor into the skull. For another type, a tube with screw-shaped outside feature that was inserted in skull and connected to the pressure sensor, the sensor was placed on the rat head. The two types of transducers were not intruded into the brain tissue. A digital physiograph system was used to acquire and analyze the CPP value. The results of the experiments showed that both types of transducers were able to measure the CPP effectively in normal conscious rats.

In data-driven mesh-based P2P live streaming system, the playback buffer management affects the audiences' quality of experience (QoE) significantly. Due to the instability and heterogeneity of P2P networks, the buffer is not always ready for playback. It is not only associated with the media timestamp, but also with the data availability in its neighbors. So how to manage the buffer synchronization position is very critical for provision of playback continuity. In this paper, we introduce a Buffer Map Matrix (BMM) data structure to describe the chunks availability of each peer and its neighbors. Furthermore we propose a dynamic asynchronous buffer management algorithm, MaxCount, in which the peer synchronizes its buffer window to the position where the maximum amount of chunk could be received. The position is predicted according to the BMM table and neighbors' upload capability. The window shifts to the position where the max amount of chunks in the buffer is available in the neighbors. We carried out extensive experiments with NS-2 simulation. The experiment results show that the MaxCount algorithm has better performances than existing approaches in playback continuity and adaptability in network churn, especially when the aggregated upload bandwidth of the peers is limited. © 2011 IEEE.

Over the Internet, e-Learning has speeded up the knowledge transfer without restrictions on time and space in recent years. In order to achieve the goal of knowledge sharing and reusing interactively, lots of available e-Learning standards have been adapted to complete this purpose. Normally, learning objects meeting these standards are sharable with other e-Learning platforms. Most e-Learning platforms, however, are unable to share learning objects directly on the Internet. The characteristics of Cloud computing provide a promising infrastructure to compute and store resources as services. Hence, this paper introduces Cloud computing into an e-Learning platform to allow the integration of different e-Learning standards to enhance interoperability of learning objects. By combining the characteristics of e-Learning and approach of Cloud computing, educators have not to re-construct learning objects to satisfy e-Learning environments developed from different e-Learning standards. © 2011 IEEE.

MMP16 stands for 16-bit Didactic Micro-Programmed Micro-Processor and consists in a comprehensive learning tool for those students of electric engineering and related disciplines that, having studied the basics of digital electronics, need to understand the principles of computer organization prior to study advanced computer architecture. Therefore, MMP16 has been designed as a bridge between the study and use of digital electronic components and a full implementation of a digital microprocessor. MMP16 is a powerful tool not only to depict the basic concepts of a microprocessor layout and operation, but also to instruct advanced concepts such as pipelining. Besides the theoretical approach, MMP16 may be used as a software developing tool, allowing the students to develop and test their own microprograms using the simulation software provided. MMP16 is currently being used in the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and its deployment is under study in several European and Chinese universities. © 2011 IEEE.
