In recent years, the use of social network services is constantly increasing. A social network service (SNS) is an individual-centered online service that provides means for users to share information and interact over the Internet. In a SNS, recommender systems supporting filtering of substantial quantities of data are essential. Collaborative filtering (CF) used in recommender systems produces predictions about the interests of a user by collecting preferences or taste information from many users. The disadvantage with the CF approach is that it produces recommendations relying on the opinions of a larger community (i.e., recommendations are determined based on what a much larger community thinks of an item). To address this problem, this article exploits social relations between people in a social network. That is, the recommender system proposed in this article takes into account social relations between users in performing collaborative filtering. The performance of the proposed recommender system was evaluated using the mean absolute error. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The prevalence of diabetes is increasing worldwide. Despite the advances in evidence based therapies, patients with diabetes continue to encounter ongoing morbidity and diminished health-related quality of life. One of the reasons for the diminished benefit from therapy is medication noncompliance. Considerable evidence shows that a combination of therapeutic lifestyle changes (increased exercise and diet modification) and drug treatment can control and, if detected early enough, even prevent the development of diabetes and its harmful effects on health. However, despite the fact that type-2 diabetes is treatable and reversible with appropriate management, patients frequently do not comply with treatment recommendations. In this paper, we use a combination of Expectation Maximization (EM) clustering and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling to determine factors influencing compliance rates, as measured in terms of medication possession ratio (MPR), among patients prescribed fixed dose combination therapy for type 2 diabetes. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper we use a gossip algorithm to obtain the projection of the observed signal into a subspace of lower dimension. Gossip algorithms allow distributed, fast and efficient computations on a Wireless Sensor Network and they can be properly modified to evaluate the sought projection. By combining computation coding with gossip algorithms we proposed a novel strategy that leads to important saving on convergence time as well as exponentially decreasing energy consumption, as the size of the network increases. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

In recent years, there are huge developments in mobile phone communication technology to 3G. 3G mobile phone in present form has offered to use internet and interact with the computing system in users own language. However, the efficient input method for Myanmar Language that can be used in 3G mobile phones is still a biggest issue. Moreover, the service of character or word prediction text input system is provided for English and other languages. This paper tried to figure out the development of an innovative Myanmar syllable prediction text input system for Android touch screen mobile phones that leverages structural information of Myanmar characters formation and statistical properties of lexicon resources. In iTextMM, by using position aware rule based matching algorithm and bigram model that achieved a desirable inputting performance compared with currently used prevalent mobile Myanmar input method on Android touch phone (MyanDroid). iTextMM has been released to public via Android Market and is currently in use by hundreds of native Myanmar Android smart phone users. An evaluation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional Myanmar text inputting method, approximately 50% in inputting performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

computer aided navigation augments intraoperatively gathered U/S with planning information that the doctor carries out before the intervention on a CT volume. A crucial step for the navigation is the registration between CT and U/S. Our approach consists on a landmark based registration. The correspondences between both modalities are found automatically using a graph to graph matching algorithm. Therefore, liver and vessels are previously segmented. The whole process has being tested on 15 pairs of real clinical data. The results are promising. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Effective service description and modeling methodologies for dynamic service composition are essential techniques for providing autonomous services in ubiquitous computing environments. In our previous paper, we proposed "u-Service" as an abstract and structured concept for operations of devices in ubiquitous environments. In addition, we established the mechanism to structure u-Services in ontology and the description specification to represent the attributes of u-Services. However, we did not present methods or standards that are sufficient to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the u-Service ontology during the design time. Since the existing quality models for software products or computing systems cannot consider the characteristics of u-Services, they are not suitable for a u-Service ontology. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an evaluation model to assess the functionality of u-Service ontologies, based on our u-Service ontology building process. We extract a modeling goal and evaluation indicators according to characteristics of u-Service ontology and establish quality metrics to quantify them. The experimental results for u-Service ontologies that were constructed in our previous studies show that we can comprehensively analyze the design of u-Service ontology. Further, on the basis of the evaluation results, improvement in design quality can be achieved. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Nowadays smart phone is widely converge and the growth of mobile and small device market is rapidly increasing. And many image based applications are developed for generating contents. In this paper, we propose a system for human-friendly image generation from user chosen reference images. In mobile application research, performance and waiting time is main problems. Because mobile OS is not fast as PC. So we modify previous texture transfer techniques considering waiting time and performance. For this, we modified from scan-line approach to random-access approach. Our proposed system can make various artistic results automatically. From this framework, we develop android operating system based smart phone application. This system can be extended to various imaging devices (IPTV, camera, stylish photo). © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

We numerically investigate the influence of plasma defocusing in high harmonic generation (HHG) by solving the first-order wave equation in an ionized medium. To quantitatively analyze of the influence of plasma defocusing, we define an enhancement factor that considers the macroscopic propagation effects including phase-matching and reabsorption. While degrading the driver pulse intensity, plasma also has a strong impact on HHG phase-matching and efficiency. With the aid of the scaling relation between the single atom efficiency and the HHG driver wavelength, our results give an estimate of HHG efficiencies with different driver wavelengths and show a limited HHG efficiency in high density media. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Diagnosis, treatment and prognosis are three different stages in the practice of medicine. All of these require some kind of decisions that are based on medical knowledge and the physician's experience, among other factors. In this paper, we first present a set of key questions that involve clinical decisions and that are faced by medical practitioners in a daily basis. We then discuss the type and codification of the information needed to answer these questions. Finally, we introduce a family of knowledge-experience decision tables to store this information and to provide answers to the aforementioned questions. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
