Machine learning methods have been applied to infer activities of users. However, the small number of training samples and their primitive representation often complicates the learning task. In order to correctly infer inhabitant’s behavior a long time of observation and data collection is needed. This article suggests the use of MFE3/GADR, an evolutionary constructive induction method. Constructive induction has been used to improve learning accuracy through transforming the primitive representation of data into a new one where regularities are more apparent. The use of MFE3/GADR is expected to improve the representation of data and behavior learning process in an intelligent environment. The results of the research show that by applying MFE3/GADR a standard learner needs considerably less data to correctly infer user’s behavior. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

MUGGES is a European research project with the goal of evaluating peer-to-peer service concepts based on GNSS systems for mobile phones. MUGGES provides an infrastructure to create, publish, provide and consume mobile micro-services directly from mobile devices. As part of the project four application prototypes have been developed, which allow for the description and sharing of places and routes between users. This paper reports about a user trial conducted in real environments with early adopters. The goal has been to identify benefits and best practices for the type of applications envisioned in the MUGGES project. The obtained results indicate that users like to share information about preferred places or routes, and see it as a complementary application to already existing applications such as Facebook or Twitter. These types of applications are often used in time-killing situations, e.g. at the bus stop. Their value lies on the highlighting of important places or non-everyday events, and on making daily coordinations simpler. People feel that the application is less intrusive, since no information such as the whereabouts of persons are shared anyhow. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Despite a long history of computer and laboratory simulation of thermomechanical processing of steel, this remains a very active area of research. Partly this is due to new steels such as AHSS posing new questions regarding material behaviour and its interaction with processing, and partly through more demanding extensions to processing capability. However, much of this work is to satisfy the increasing needs for accuracy in standard production. Tata Steel Europe employs a suite of computational and experimental techniques for simulation, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, of which a brief discussion is given. Moreover, the validation of such techniques is described, comparing computer models with laboratory tests, pilot mill rolling and plant data for plate and strip products. Highlighted areas of current development for superior predictive capability are: extensions of alloy chemistry, recrystallisation behaviour at low strains, onset of precipitation pinning, grain size variation through the thickness and distribution around the average size at a given position, alternative modelling techniques, and robust, user-friendly interfaces for use by production personnel.

Prêt à Voter is one of the most well-known and most extensively analysed electronic voting systems for polling stations. However, an analysis from a legal point of view has not yet been conducted. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the readiness of Prêt à Voter for legally binding federal elections in Germany. This case is of particular interest as Germany has with the Constitutional Court Decision from 2009 probably the most restrictive requirements on electronic voting in particular regarding the public nature of elections and verifiability respectively. While many aspects are analysed, some remain open for further legal and technical discussions. Thus, a final decision is not yet possible. Aspects analysed are the ballot paper layout, different processes from ballot printing through to the publishing of results, as well as verifiability, and the overall election management. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

With rapid advances in wireless communications, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas technology has been integrated into next-generation wireless communication standards. In this paper, we introduce a MIMO system model, propose a multichannel radio link control protocol and a dynamic channel scheduling policy. We then conduct a performance study on the multichannel link control protocol with two different scheduling policies (i.e., dynamic and static scheduling) using simulations. Simulation results show that the dynamic scheduling outperforms the static scheduling. It is observed that the average packet delay with the dynamic scheduling increases with the average error rate of parallel channels, but decreases with the variance in the error rates of parallel channels. More interestingly, the number of parallel channels has only an insignificant impact on the average packet delay, when the dynamic scheduling is applied in MIMO systems, from which we confirm that the use of parallel channels is a favorable option for packet data networking in the point of view of the link-layer performance. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

It is a significant challenge to discover knowledge from noise data. Most of previous works have focused on the data cleansing and the correction for the benefit of the subsequent mining process. When the training data contains noise, the classification accuracy was being affected dramatically. In this paper, we present a novel classification algorithm named ESC (Error-Sensitive Classification) to cover this problem. We materialize our main idea by constructing Attribute-Decision tree and measuring correlation among attributes. Experimental results show that our algorithm has ability to significantly improve the quality of data mining results. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

3D reconstruction based on high-level features, such as line and plane, is a significant development trend in Digital Photogrammetry and computer Vision. To auto-recognize corresponding line and point is a core problem in above research areas. Therefore this article presents a novel line segment stereo recognition algorithm based on straight line auto-grouping, epipolar line constraint guiding, vanishing point direction guiding, and image pyramid model. The strategy for auto-recognizing corresponding line bases on "independent observation" + "local integral constraint" + "large area search" + "probability relaxation", so our algorithm satisfies objective law that the global distribution of space-object is discontinuous but local is continuous. Simultaneously, in order to overcome image geometric distortion, NCC similarity measure based on SIFT operator compensating is presented. Furthermore, in corresponding line recognition, the problems of discontinuties in space and variation of parallax can be solved. Finally, through comparing with method of homography line matching, experimental results prove that our algorithm has a better reliability, rightness and precision. Moreover this research paves the way for auto-3D-reconstruction. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

With the increasing popularity of smart phones, knowing the accurate position of users has become critical to many context-aware applications. In this paper, we introduce a novel Probabilistic Infrastructureless Navigation (ProbIN) system for GPS-challenging environments. ProbIN uses inertial and magnetic sensors in mobile phones to derive users' current location. Instead of relying on basic laws of physics (e.g. double integral of acceleration equals to displacement) ProbIN uses a statistical model for estimating the position of users. This statistical model is built based on the user's data by applying machine learning techniques from the statistical machine translation field. Thus, ProbIN can capture the user's specific walking patterns and is, therefore, more robust against noisy sensor readings. In the evaluation of our approach we focused on the most common daily scenarios. We conducted experiments with a user walking and carrying the phone in different settings such as in the hand or in the pocket. The results of the experiments show that even though the mobile phone was not mounted to the user's body, ProbIN outperforms the state-of-the-art dead reckoning approaches. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

The increasing popularity of mobile devices calls for effective execution of mobile applications. A lot of research has been conducted on properly splitting and outsourcing computing intensive tasks to external resources (e.g., public clouds) by considering insufficient computing resources on mobile devices. However, little attention has been paid to the overall users' response time, where the network may dominate. In this study, we set to investigate how to effectively minimize users' response time for mobile applications. We consider both the impact of the network and the computing itself. We first show that outsourcing to nearby residential computers may be more advantageous than public clouds for mobile applications due to network impact. Furthermore, to speed up computing, we leverage parallel processing techniques. Accordingly, we propose to build Mobile MapReduce (MMR) to effectively execute outsource computing intensive mobile applications. Based on the original MapReduce framework, a new scheduling model is built in MMR that can always leverage the best computing resources to conduct computation with appropriate parallel processing. To demonstrate the performance of MMR, we run several real-world applications, such as text searching, face detection, and image processing, on the prototype. The results show great potentials of MMR in minimizing the response time of the outsourced mobile applications. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.
