This paper presents a novel fixed length coding scheme for video compression. By utilizing binary symbol probability estimation after symbol binarization, binary symbols are coded using variable length code to fixed length code table to generate fixed length code bitstream. Simulation results show the proposed scheme achieves around 10% better compression efficiency compared to state-of-the-art Huffman-based coder. © 2011 ieee.

We propose a novel multiple description video coding (MDVC) technique for robust video transmission via lossy networks of both packet erasure and bit errors. The new MDVC technique is designed to meet two objectives: ultra fine description granularity and low encoder complexity, which allow resource-deprived video transmitters (e.g., smart phones) to operate in time-varying adverse network conditions. These design goals are met by the signal acquisition and coding strategy of compressive sensing, and by locally adaptive sparse representation of video signals. © 2011 ieee.

In this paper, new raster scan orders other than the conventional horizontal scan from the top-left corner of the image/slice are proposed to fully exploit content correlation from the regions right to and below the current coding unit. By being applied to each slice/frame adaptively with the conventional one, features influencing the scan order selection are investigated. Different adaptive scan schemes are tested and compared. Up to 3.4% bit-rate reduction can be achieved for Intra coding with limited increase in complexity. © 2011 ieee.

The analysis of user search goals for a query can be very useful in improving search engine relevance and user experience. Although the research on inferring user goals or intents for text search has received much attention, little has been proposed for image search with visual information. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to capture user search goals in image search by exploring pseudo-images which are extracted by mining single sessions in user click-through logs to reflect user information needs. Moreover, we also propose a novel evaluation criterion to determine the number of user search goals for a query. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2011 ieee.

This paper presents a novel method for generating multi-view video. The video can be viewed without wearing a pair of glasses which is more suitable for outdoor bulletin board of kiosk applications. One of the major aspects of the new method is that the depth estimation is not required. Hence, no depth warp induced holes will be introduced. Our method first extracts feature correspondence from a Left/Right (LR) image pair and recover a set of 3D point. Then, those 3D points are projected onto the multiple virtual views. Secondly, the homography matrices are calculated for pre-warping. Finally, the pixel values of the virtual views are generated by the proposed content preserve warping with smoothness constraint. © 2011 ieee.

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is an interesting but difficult topic of research. It uses the visual features to achieve the image searching on database. In this paper, we propose an image indexing for CBIR based on color feature, which consider both the computational complexity and the spatial relationship. We use a 3D mathematical model to design the color codebook and exploit the feature of the query image to adopt it. In the experiments, we discuss the three parameters affecting the performance and find out the corresponding optimal value to raise the retrieval speed and accuracy. Besides, we also demonstrate that the proposed scheme is robust for some image distortions and best matches human perception overall. © 2011 ieee.

The aim of our web-based VHDL Code Generator, named DiaHDL, is, to translate a component diagram to synthesizable VHDL code [1][2]. In this live demonstration we present the special Graphical User Interface (GUI) of this web-based tool that allows the user to select digital components, customize their parameters und generate the VHDL code. This is done for an FPGA design for image processing, a JPEG encoder. We show the complete design flow from component entry to bit stream generation for programming a Xilinx FPGA device, using the proposed GUI of DiaHDL tool together with Xilinx ISE tool, a standard HDL synthesis tool. © 2011 ieee.

In this paper, the subjective image quality for different image content is investigated by psychophysical experiments. The experimental images are the parts from natural scenes distorted by integer transform and quantization in H.264 frame. These images are divided into two types based on the scene content, type I and type II. The perceived thresholds and subjective graded scores for different quantization are obtained using forced choice staircase experiments and graded response experiments, respectively. The subjective assessment results showed that the image quality of type I degrades much more than the type II when quantization steps increase, and the preliminary experiment showed that the existed IQA metric, i.e. SSIM, could not predict it well. We also present a content-based image classifier to predict the two image types. The results show good accordance between the classifier and the subjective assessment. © 2011 ieee.

Developing reliable and generic perceptual quality metrics is an challenging issue in three-dimensional (3D) visual signals processing, although many two dimensional (2D) image quality metrics have been proposed and work well on 2D images. In this paper, the binocular spatial sensitivity influenced by the binocular fusion and rivalry properties is considered in the quality measurement. Firstly, the binocular spatial sensitivity map is modeled to reflect the properties. Then, a framework of integration of binocular spatial sensitivity map into quality assessment is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed metric correlate well with human perception of quality on a dataset of 3D images and human subjective scores. © 2011 ieee.
