In this paper, we propose a new image coding scheme which combines the advantage of hierarchical (i.e. multi-resolution) representation, adaptive interpolation and rate-distortion optimization capability of block-based coding. We divide the coding process into two layers by partitioning the image pixels into four groups with chessboard structure. In the first layer, pixels in one of these partitions are encoded and reconstructed using the state-of-the-art coding scheme. In the second layer, directional adaptive interpolation is employed to predict and code the pixels in the remaining three partitions. Joint mode decision is performed for the co-located macroblocks of these three partitions. Skip mode is introduced to save coding bits for blocks where the interpolation process works very well. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed coding scheme achieves very promising performance. © 2011 ieee.

In this paper, we propose an aerial surveillance system utilizing a static camera and a PTZ camera. The static camera captures a wide angle view of the scene, while the PTZ camera is capable of zooming in to a region of interest (ROI) selected by the user and capturing a detailed image. The system consists of a novel tracking algorithm named Simultaneous Estimation, Filtering and Rejection (SEFAR) and a multi-camera apparatus accommodating real-time requirements. The SEFAR algorithm performs feature point detection, homography estimation and outlier rejection in a one-pass process, avoiding time consuming iterations. The multi-camera apparatus uses high-resolution cameras of different zoom factors with a rotatable mirror for faster PTZ movements. Experimental results show robust and efficient tracking performance of SEFAR, demonstrating its possible use in real aerial surveillance systems in the future. © 2011 ieee.

Distributed Compressed Video Sensing (DCVS) has developed as one of the efficient solutions that guarantee low complexity video compression. In this paper, a novel DCVS algorithm with unequal protection of the video signal's elements is proposed. The new algorithm utilizes not only the sparsity and probability distribution of the video signal but also its particular unequal significance feature. Based on this feature, we design the structured irregular low-density sensing matrix to sample the signal. From the analysis and simulation results, it is confirmed that our method has higher recovery quality than the conventional Bayesian Compressed Sensing (CS) using Belief Propagation (BP). Moreover, the excellent noise-resilience of BP is preserved in our algorithm comparing to the DCVS schemes using optimization recovery. © 2011 ieee.

This paper presents a scheme of a multiple-image compressed encryption based on the compressive holography technique. Computer generate hologram (CGH) is implemented to record multiple images simultaneously into an encrypted hologram. Because its two-dimensional (2D) Fourier transform (FT) result is analogous a partial 3D Fourier transform sampling, the 2D FT result can be compressed by a nonuniform sampling accompanied with a quantization. The encryption and compression processes agrees with the requirement of the compressive sensing and composes the compressive holography. Therefore, the decryption is solved by a minimization. It remains the sparsity of the recovered natural images in the wavelet basis. Meanwhile, a total-variation regularization and a nonnegative constraint is employed to extract images with edge preserved and nonnegative gray scale, respectively. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the multiple-image compressed encryption. © 2011 ieee.

This paper presents a novel scheme for human action recognition. First of all, we employ the curvature estimation to analyze human posture patterns and to yield the discriminative feature sequences. The feature sequences are further represented into sets of strings. Consequently, we can solve human action recognition problem by the string matching technique. In order to boost the performance of string matching, we apply the NonparametricWeighted Feature Extraction (NWFE) to compact the string representation. Finally, we train a Bayes classifier to perform action recognition. Unlike traditional approaches using the nearest neighbor rule, our proposed scheme can classify the human actions more efficiently while maintaining high accuracy. The experiment results show that the proposed scheme is efficient and accurate in human action recognition. © 2011 ieee.

Disparity estimation is used in Multi-view Video Coding (MVC) to remove the inter-view redundancies present in both color and depth multi-view video sequences. The standard H.264/MVC achieves high compression efficiency by deriving the optimal disparity vector through the exhaustive calculation of the Rate-Distortion cost function for all the possible search points. This makes disparity estimation highly computational expensive. This paper proposes an efficient technique that exploits both the multi-view and the epipolar geometries to determine the optimal search area, resulting in a reduction of search points and thus computations. Simulation results show that this technique can save up to 95% of the computational cost for disparity estimation, with negligible loss in coding efficiency for both the color and the depth multi-view video coding. © 2011 ieee.

With the progresses in 3D imaging technologies, mobile stereoscopic images are gradually popular since it can provide the anytime and anywhere 3D viewing effects. Due to the heterogeneous transmission environments and various screen sizes of mobile devices, the stereoscopic image transcoding and retargeting are two completely independent adaptation techniques for mobile 3D image streaming. These two processing operations both deal with the disparity estimation. In this work, we propose to integrate stereoscopic 3D image transcoding with retargeting for mobile streaming. The stereoscopic image transcoding and retargeting are coupled through a straightforward link that provides the pixel-based disparity map from the retargeting stage to guide the transcoding for saving some computations while keeping efficient bit allocation. Our experimental results clearly demonstrate the advantage of coupling the transcoding with retargeting in terms of faster transcoding and saliency-based bit allocation for low bit-rate mobile streaming.

In this paper, we propose a robust algorithm for 3D object pose estimation from a single 2D image. The proposed pose estimation algorithm is based on modifying the traditional image projection error function to a sum of squared image projection errors weighted by their associated distances. By using an Euler angle representation, we formulate the energy minimization for the pose estimation problem as searching a global minimum solution. Based on this framework, the proposed algorithm employs robust techniques to detect outliers in a coarse-to-fine fashion, thus providing very robust pose estimation. Our experiments show that the algorithm outperforms previous methods under noisy conditions. © 2011 ieee.

Single image super-resolution (SR) is a severely unconstrained task. While the self-example-based methods are able to reproduce sharp edges, they perform poorly for textures. For recovering the fine details, higher-level image segmentation and corresponding external texture database are employed in the example-based SR methods, but they involve too much human interaction. In this paper, we discuss the existing problems of example-based technique using scale space analysis. Accordingly, a robust pixel classification method is designed based on the phase congruency model in scale space, which can effectively divide images into edges, textures and flat regions. Then a super-resolution framework is proposed, which can adaptively emphasize the importance of high-frequency residuals in structural examples and scale invariant fractal property in textural regions. Experimental results show that our SR approach is able to present both sharp edges and vivid textures with few artifacts.

Saliency detection plays an important role in image segmentation, content-aware resizing and object recognition. Most approaches obtain promising performance recently, which is useful for the postprocessing. We propose a clustering-based method to detect refined regions with comparative performance For coarse-grained classification with unknown clusters number, an adaptive algorithm called f-means is developed in this paper. Pixels are clustered by f-means based on color and spatial features, and then the centroids are used to compute their saliency values. Experiments show that our algorithm generates more fine maps, which outperform the state-of-the-art approaches on MSRA dataset. Relying on the saliency map, we also get superior results in foreground extracting, image resizing and thumbnails generation.
