Interactive object segmentation is widely used for extracting any user-interested objects from natural images. A common problem with many interactive segmentation approaches is that the object segmentation quality is degraded due to inaccurate object/background seeds provided by the user. This paper proposes an iterative adjustable graph cut to efficiently solve this problem. First, object/background seeds are initialized based on the object segmentation result obtained with the user-specified scribbles as the interactive input. Then, an iterative seed adjustment scheme is exploited to correct inaccurate seeds and extract new suitable seeds via graph cut, in which the balancing weight between energy terms are adaptively updated to protect stable seeds and speedup the iteration process. Finally, suitable seeds are obtained and graph cut is used to segment the objects. Experimental results demonstrate the better segmentation performance of our approach even if user provides rather rough seeds. © 2011 ieee.

The denoising performance of the Non-Local Means (NLM) method decreases as the variance of additive white Gaussian noise becomes higher. In this paper, we explain this phenomenon and propose a modified version of the Non-Local Means (NLM) method, called the Enhanced-Weights NLM (EWNLM) algorithm, to denoise highly noisy images. The EWNLM algorithm evaluates weights from a pre-filtered image using the Gaussian kernel, which in turn result in more robust weight contributions from similar pixels in the search window. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the superior performance of the EWNLM scheme when the standard deviation of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is greater than 20. © 2011 ieee.

It is widely known that the human visual system (HVS) applies multi-resolution analysis to the scenes we see. In fact, many of the best image quality metrics, e.g. MS-SSIM and IW-PSNR/SSIM are based on multi-scale models. However, in existing multi-scale type of image quality assessment (IQA) methods, the resolution levels are fixed. In this paper, we examine the problem of selecting optimal levels in the multi-resolution analysis to preprocess the image for perceptual quality assessment. According to the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) of the HVS, the sampling of visual information by the human eyes approximates a low-pass process. For images, the amount of information we can extract depends on the size of the image (or the object(s) inside) as well as the viewing distance. Therefore, we proposed a wavelet transform based adaptive high-frequency clipping (AHC) model to approximate the effective visual information that enters the HVS. After the high-frequency clipping, rather than processing separately on each level, we transform the filtered images back to their original resolutions for quality assessment. Extensive experimental results show that on various databases (LIVE, IVC, and Toyama-MICT), performance of existing image quality algorithms (PSNR and SSIM) can be substantially improved by applying the metrics to those AHC model processed images.

In basketball games, screen is a blocking move performed by an offensive player, who stands beside or behind a defender, in order to free a teammate to shoot, to receive a pass, or to drive in to score. Screen is the fundamental essence that most offensive tactics are executed with. In this paper, a screen-strategy analysis system is designed, and through combining the identified screens, what tactics are executed in basketball games can be speculated. The proposed system is capable of court region detection, camera calibration and player extraction. Player trajectories are computed by a Kalman filter-based tracking method and mapped to the real-world court coordinates. The player position/trajectory information greatly assists professional-oriented applications such as screen-strategy analysis and tactic inference. The experiments on broadcast basketball videos show encouraging results. © 2011 ieee.

image quality evaluation is an important technique to judge the image fidelity of the image applications. In this study, it not only analyzes and evaluates the entire watermarked image before and after attacks, but also helps the encoder to design the superior watermarking algorithms. In order to get the best practice of transmission power on watermark intensity and perceptual efficiency, this study investigates new visible watermarking algorithms based on human vision system (HVS) model and noise visibility function to provide adequate flexibility during the watermark energy embedding. Since it is not possible for all digital images to go through detailed subjective evaluation, 12 image quality metrics are utilized here to automatically predict the subjective judgments of watermarked image since image quality assessments are influenced by the transparency and robustness of watermarked images. In addition, malicious attack like image recovery is implemented to verify the consistency of image quality metrics. From the experimental results, the algorithm of the perceptual model of contrast-sensitive function (CSF) with noise reduction of the visibility thresholds for HVS in DWT domain outperforms the CSF only based algorithm. On the other hand, the image quality metric evaluation values before and after the malicious attack demonstrate the similar trend of judgment which prove the evaluation consistency. Therefore, such study could help the algorithm design for better image fidelity preservation and secure robustness of practical visual communication. © 2011 ieee.

In distributed single-view video coding (DSVC) or distributed multiview video coding (DMVC), the compression performance is greatly affected by the quality of side information (SI). Most existing DSVC or DMVC schemes generate SI by employing motion estimation (ME) at the decoder. Since the original frame is unavailable, the ME accuracy is low. In this paper we propose a novel distributed coding scheme for both single-view video and multi-view video. At the encoder, each Wyner-Ziv frame (WF) is sub-sampled using a block-based sub-sampling algorithm, and resulting sub-samples are successively encoded and transmitted. For the latter samples, adaptive intra prediction is employed with no intra mode bits transmitted. At the decoder, the current WF is progressively decoded, and thus the ME accuracy is iteratively improved. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DSVC and DMVC framework has achieved significant rate distortion (RD) gain. © 2011 ieee.

Compound images/videos are a mixture of text, graphics and natural images/video. Despite extensive research on compound image coding, rare research on compound video coding has been reported in the literature. This paper proposes three approaches to exploit inter-frame correlations in compound video. One is the motion compensation aided base color (MCA-BC) approach, which handles a special type of motion on text/graphics parts: foreground/background color change. The other two are motion-compensated residue base color and index map (MC-BCIM) and the motion-compensated residue scalar quantization (MC-RSQ) approach, both of which exploit spatial correlations among motion compensated residues. Experiments based on the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference software HM0.9 show that the proposed scheme largely improves the coding efficiency for more than 3dB on compound video with text/graphics and still keep a comparable performance on natural video content. © 2011 ieee.

This paper proposes a novel method to locate crowd behavior instability spatio-temporally using a velocity-field based social force model. Considering the impacts of velocity field on interaction force between individuals, we establish an improved social force model by introducing collision probability in view of velocity distribution. As compared with commonly-used social force model, which defines interaction force as a dependent variable of relative geometric (physical) position of the individuals, this improved model can provide a better prediction of interactions using the collision probability in a dynamic crowd. With spatio-temporal instability analysis, we can extract video clips with potential abnormality and as well locate region of interest where abnormality is likely to happen. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied to detection of abnormal events with high accuracy of instability estimation due to the velocity-field based social force model. © 2011 ieee.

Performing Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) on Internet connected databases through Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network (P2P-CBIR) effectively explores the large-scale image database distributed over connected peers. In additional to enlarge the retrieval scale from server-client to P2P networks, the required computation and network traffics for performing CBIR can also be distributed. Decentralized unstructured P2P framework is adopted to perform the P2P-CBIR in considering control flexibility, under which reconfiguration is feasible to improve the retrieval performance. Based on this framework, the proposed P2P-CBIR can progressively refine the accuracy of retrieved images when they are transmitted on the routes toward the query peer. With flexible P2P framework, reconfiguration can be carried out on the P2P-CBIR, which helps to improve retrieval efficiency. Experiments verified that the P2P-CBIR with reconfiguration outperforms the one without, and the latter outperforms server-client approaches in both retrieval accuracy and network traffics. © 2011 ieee.

As the next generation standard of video coding, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is intended to provide significantly better coding efficiency than all existing video coding standards. To improve the coding efficiency of intra frame coding, up to 34 intra prediction modes are defined in HEVC. The best mode among these pre-defined intra prediction modes is selected by rate-distortion optimization (RDO) for each block. If all directions are tested in the RDO process, it will be very time-consuming. To alleviate the encoder computation load, this paper proposes a new method to reduce the candidates in RDO process. In addition, the direction information of the neighboring blocks is made full use of to speed up intra mode decision. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides 20% and 28% time savings in intra high efficiency and low complexity cases on average compared to the default encoding scheme in HM 1.0 with almost the same coding efficiency. This algorithm has been proposed to HEVC standard and partially adopted into the HEVC test model. © 2011 ieee.
