grid computing has the capability for solving complex scientific applications. The complex applications are divided into smaller units to make the process easier. Smaller units are scheduled in such a manner that the overall cost is minimized. So, scheduling is an important part of grid Environment. The aim of scheduling is proper utilization of resources and minimizes the completion time. In task scheduling, the job is divided into number of Meta tasks. Meta task do not have any dependency between each other. Now, the problem is to map Meta tasks onto resources such that the Makespan is minimized. In this paper, we propose a Three Stage Approach (TSA) for grid task scheduling. The stages are threshold, queuing using priority assignment and resource selection. Our experimental results and analysis shows better results than traditional scheduling algorithms like Minimum Execution Time (MET), Minimum Completion Time (MCT), Min-Min and Max-Min. Our approach provides optimum solution or a solution close to optimum.

ieee 802.16 (WiMAX) and ieee 802.11 (WiFi) are different wireless access technologies with the former being used in Metropolitan Area Networks and the latter used in Local Area Networks. With the increase in popularity of WiMAX and WiFi networks, it is expected that mobile devices in future will be equipped with these radios for data access. Such a scenario presents us with an opportunity to utilize both these radios to optimize throughput. In this paper, we present an analysis of Traffic splitting over an abstract Multi-radio, Multi-hop wireless mesh network for improvements in throughput, where each device is equipped with WiMAX and WiFi radios. We attempt to setup a mathematical model that deals with the following issues: What constitutes a Hybrid Network Node; How should traffic splitting decisions be made; What parameters a suitable routing protocol should look out for when making routing decisions in such a network; finally, How does traffic splitting improve network performance? From the analysis performed it is seen that traffic splitting improves throughput and reduces end-to-end delay of a flow.

Any physical Thing is a smart object, if it is embedded with sensor(s), actuator(s), a microcontroller and a low power radio. More often these components can be fabricated in chip, as small as the size of a human thumb finger. The main vision of “Web of Things” (WoTs) is to realize connectivity of the Web to billions of such smart objects. Applications can be built on top of standards like IPv6 over Low Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) at the L3 layer and ieee 802.15.4 at the L2 layer of the network stack. Some of the popular applications include smart metering, building and home automation, healthcare, asset management, environmental monitoring and industrial automation. One of the main challenges for application developers is interoperability among the services provided by smart objects of disparate environments. This paper deals with interoperability at the application layer. We present an approach using the REST principles, for smart plant-watering application. The proposed approach can be adapted to any kind of applications involving smart objects. The paper also specifies an efficient syndication algorithm for event notifications from Things. We empirically show that our proposed approach achieves interoperability as well as performs efficiently.

Desktop grids, which use the idle cycles of desktop PCs of small enterprises and institutions, usually are equipped with hundreds or thousands of desktops, mainly used for office tasks. Such grids vary markedly from conventional grids (multi-site clusters) in terms of their dynamic nature. This calls for the need of new scheduling algorithms, tailor-made for such systems. Since the nature of such desktop grids attract highly parallel algorithms, designing efficient scheduling algorithms of parallel jobs on desktop grids become worthwhile research issue. In this paper an adaptive scheduling mechanism for desktop grids has been presented, where tasks are initially assigned to different available grid resources based on a resource selection algorithm. The resource selection algorithm, which works in an online mode, selects resources based on given set of parameters and previous execution log in an adaptive (flexible) manner. Execution log helps to decide in choosing the most relevant computational parameter depending upon the tasks that are assigned to grid resources. Later, during task execution, if performance of any task degrades, then adaptive algorithm assists the scheduling policy to adapt the system to achieve the high throughput by rescheduling to either the server node or to the best available local node at present. This method can also deal with the unpredictable execution conditions commonly encountered on desktop grids. In this paper, gridGain 2.0 has been used for setting up desktop grid test bed and the performance of the aforesaid adaptive scheduling algorithm has been presented.

Providing clean, continuous and reliable power to many industrial customers has become a necessity. Where possible, sensitive customers are supplied by two low-voltage utility feeders one of which is used as backup. Bus Transfer is able to provide the sensitive loads with a fast transfer to the backup feeder when the main one fails. This paper presents a new method to optimize harmonic estimation in bus transfer systems that use thyristor-based static transfer switch. The method uses filter bank property of Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform to measure the effective values of harmonics which are compatible with IEC standards, and implements them in power quality indices for operation of bus transfer systems. Implementation of wavelet packet transform has the benefit of inter-harmonic recognition, low spectral leakage, and the use of inappropriate length of a sampling window. The proposed method decomposes the voltage and current waveforms into uniform frequency bands corresponding to harmonics, and uses an optimized method to reduce the spectral leakage due to imperfect frequency response of the applied wavelet filter bank. As a case study, by using PSCAD software linked with MATLAB, the method is implemented and tested on a harmonic polluted network. The simulation results show the high accuracy of the proposed method. © 2012 ieee.

The project MoSgrid (Molecular Simulation grid) has been developing a web-based science gateway supporting the community with various services for quantum chemistry, molecular modeling, and docking. Users gain access to distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs) via intuitive user interfaces for sophisticated tools, specialized workflows, and distributed repositories. Currently, the MoSgrid community consists of about 120 users from a number of fields related to chemistry and bioinformatics located in Germany. However, the underlying security infrastructure is generally applicable and can be deployed in arbitrary projects. The paper proposes a distributed computing framework that integrates parallel differential evolution (DE) and multi-agents. Given a complex high-dimensional optimization problem, our approach decomposes the problem into a set of subcomponents, which are evolved by a set of Slave agents concurrently, and the results are synthesized and further evolved by a Master agent. As top-level agents of the framework, the Master and Slave agents can be divided into asynchronous teams of sub-agents including Constructors for solution initialization, Improvers for solution evolution, Repairers for constraint handling, Destroyers for keeping the quality and size of the population, etc., which share populations of solution vectors and cooperate to solve the problem efficiently. The proposed approach is highly parallelized, flexible, and scalable, and its efficiency is demonstrated by comparison with some state-of-the-art approaches.

Computational forecast systems (CFS) are essential tools for daily and emergency coastal management by providing water dynamics predictions, through integration of numerical models and field data. The reliability of their predictions depends greatly on the parallel models' accuracy, but achieving the adequate resolution in spatial discretizations for port-to-ocean, multi-scale analysis is often hampered by computational costs. Nowadays forecast systems are processed in dedicated workstations, fulfilling robustness and quality control through automatic comparison with field data and simulation redundancy. Recently, CFS has been ported to HPC grids with significant success, but requiring highly-specialized staff to maintaining them in these complex environments. The need to increase the available resources and to export CFS to coastal managers has promoted the search for simpler approaches. The scalability and flexibility of cloud resources, along with dedicated services for facilitating their use, makes them an attractive option. In this paper, the performance of operational coastal forecast systems are assessed and compared for the first time in multiple environments, including local workstations, grids and a pilot cloud. The analysis is conducted in a range of resources from the physical processor number available at the cloud to the optimal number of processors for the specific cases. ©Civil-Comp Press, 2015.

With the development of high resolution images technique, large scale data intensive computing and computing-intensity is highly demanded. However, isolated storage and dispersive management cannot meet exponentially increasing demand for storage and management of crop images. On the basis of the crop images grasped by our independent developed agricultural intelligent search engine, a kind of extraction technique will be studied to extract the special feature behind scattered image data and to build up a cloud platform for the crop images information. Fast and accurate searching for crop images and its highly efficient management under cloud computation environment are achieved through map-reduce parallel mechanism.

MapReduce is a highly efficient parallel large data sets （greater than 1TB） processing model, widely used in cloud computing environment. The current mainstream cloud computing service providers have adopted Hadoop, the open source MapReduce implementation, to build their cloud computing platform. However, like all open distributed computing frameworks, MapReduce suffers from the service integrity assurance vulnerability: it takes merely one malicious worker to render the overall computation result useless. It is very important to efficiently detect the malicious workers in cloud computing environment. Existing solutions are not effective enough in defeating the malicious behaviour of non-collusive and collusive workers. In this paper, we focus on the mappers, which typically constitute the majority of workers. On the basis of the existing frameworks, we make the master manage the computing workers based on the security levels, and introduce the trusted verifier worker and caching mechanism. According to the system analysis, the service integrity assurance framework suggested in this paper is more efficient and accurate to detect the malicious workers in the cloud computing environment based on MapReduce.
