Regular indoor building inspections and maintenance are essential to prevent property damage and sustain its condition and functionality for the intended occupants. Traditional inspection is heavily labor-intensive, time-consuming, experience-based, and error-prone. With the growing development of multi-sensor and artificial intelligence (AI)-empowered unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), inspection activities can be automated and digitalized. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how to incorporate them effectively for streamlined inspection of indoor building systems. This paper proposes a workflow of integrating robots, multimodal imagery sensors (e. g., infrared camera, LiDAR, RGB camera), and AI-based data analytics to support real-time detection and assessment of defects within indoor building environments. In addition, the detected imagery anomalies will be geo-registered and located into a 3D building model, to support further analysis and evaluation of building conditions. The successful implementation of the envisioned intelligent robotic sensing system can lead to a significantly more efficient and responsive diagnosis of indoor building systems.

Accidents caused by falling debris from buildings keep happening in densely populated cities in the US, even in cities with mandatory facade safety inspection programs (e.g., NYC, Boston, and Chicago). One of the major challenges in the current facade safety inspection program is the lack of systematic guidance for inspectors to comprehensively check facade conditions on-site. To address this challenge, the authors envisioned an approach to generate a list of applicable defect types for any given building facade. Building information modeling (BIM) has been leveraged to decompose facades into components and link them to applicable defects. The developed mechanism has been tested to generate checklists for 12 common facade components on real facades. The results of this work can be considered by inspection companies and city agencies for approving/rejecting inspection findings to improve their work processes for comprehensive inspections.

The construction industry is known for its disproportionately high fatality and injury rates, making it one of the most hazardous industries in the US. Despite the significant risks involved, there is a lack of effective health monitoring in construction jobsites. While wearable physiological sensing and artificial intelligence advancements have introduced unique opportunities to assess workers' health status, there are still inefficiencies in representing that information to support managers' decision-making. Recently, the concept of digital twin (DT) has been used in various construction applications. Given the exponential growth of its enabling technologies, DT has great potential to transform worker health monitoring in construction jobsites. Therefore, this research investigates the feasibility of integrating workers' physiological responses with DT technology to generate health maps that deliver workers' aggregated health information to managers to reinforce their decision-making. The DT-based health maps are expected to enhance workers' occupational health and safety at construction jobsites.

Road pavement condition is crucial information for maintaining infrastructure integrity, assuring road safety, and optimizing maintenance costs. However, historical condition data of urban pavements condition are not usually available because there is no technology that can evaluate pavement conditions in a low-cost and efficient way. On the one hand, this research proposes a system capable of obtaining and processing pavement images to evaluate urban pavements. On the other hand, a deep learning model is trained with over 50,000 images of 13.2 m x 2.6 m of asphalt pavement from different zones of Santiago, Chile. Following the processing of these images, the following distresses were manually labeled with two different levels of severities: patches;potholes;and transversal, longitudinal, and fatigue cracking. Finally, the distresses are measured using the dimensions of the artificial neural network's bounding boxes. The artificial neural networks (ANNs) proposed for this research are YOLOv5 and YOLOv7.

Recent advances in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), photogrammetry, and flight path planning enabled autonomous surveying and mapping. However, most automatic flight path plannings are designed for horizontal planar surfaces. There is vertical path planning for building surfaces with specified building widths and heights. However, there is vertical path planning that creates paths based on the actual geometry of the surfaces to be surveyed, which is required for vertical and sloped surfaces or terrains. This paper presents a robust three-dimensional (3D) UAS trajectory planning to capture the images of sloped surfaces using different flight configurations with waypoints. The flight configurations include flight height, image overlap, and camera angles. A rock surface site in NC was used as a case study to create and validate a 3D flight path.

Poor quality of bid documents impacts bidders' cost estimates and bid price, and further leads to claims/dispute during the project implementation. As the problems and ambiguities in the bid documents are addressed by the pre-bid request for information (RFI), pre-bid RFI analysis helps determine major ambiguities in the bid documents that should be clarified for enhancing bid documents' quality. This study uses pre-bid RFI as the principal data for obtaining good quality bid documents. Natural language processing (NLP) is used to pre-process/transform unstructured raw text data, and machine learning-driven classifier is applied for the classification of collected pre-bid RFI. The proposed method can automatically identify the critical pre-bid RFI that can lead to significant revision in the original bid documents. This study can contribute to efficient pre-bid RFI management that facilitates bidding process and can improve bid document quality for similar projects to be carried out in the future.

The increasing availability of low-cost sensors, such as smartphones and the cameras embedded in cars for driving assistance, provides new opportunities to enhance pavement health monitoring. While computer vision techniques have been successfully used to detect pavement distresses using 2D images, distresses involving depth measurements, such as rutting, remain a challenge. The objective of this study is to develop an object detection model to automatically detect instances of rutting in pavements. This study leverages pavement images and distress data collected from the United States Federal Highway Administration Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database to train a rutting detection model. Transfer learning is used to analyze the generalizability of the model. Results indicate that street-level images are highly suitable for detecting pavement rutting using computer vision algorithms. Future research is needed to quantify the severity of rutting using image processing techniques.

Controlling and monitoring temperature in environmental chambers is very crucial for testing the thermal performance of building envelope systems. However, off-the-shelf options are costly, non-customized, and hard to maintain. Therefore, the goal of this study is to develop a cost-effective, scalable, and user-friendly temperature control module that is capable of monitoring, analyzing, and controlling the temperature in environmental chambers. The PID temperature control module was developed in Python by using an open-source library coupled with an Arduino Uno Rev 3 that interacts with a digital dimmer meant for alternating current. The system was configured to dim incandescent lights which were programmed to increase or decrease the temperature in a confined chamber. Moreover, this module was designed and validated by applying it on an environmental chamber to control and monitor its temperature, and thus the module's design accuracy and efficiency. The developed module can help future users perform built envelope thermal performance analysis with minimum cost and least design effort.

In construction environments, transient construction objects such as moving vehicles, debris, materials, and construction tools can pose safety hazards and impede visibility. Monitoring their movement in video frames is crucial for effective project management, but it is challenging due to the complexity and dynamism of construction sites. This study proposes a two-step method to address this challenge by detecting, tracking, and segmenting transient construction objects in video frames. A synthetic dataset is used to train a deep learning-based detection model, and coarse and fine tracking models are then applied to track and segment objects based on detection results. The preliminary results reveal the significant performance of the proposed detection model, achieving an average precision of 75.75% at an IoU threshold of 0.5. It is demonstrated that the proposed detection method enables the detection of transient construction objects using synthetic datasets, reducing the need for manually annotating additional construction-related datasets. Besides, the produced segmentation results provide detailed information about the location and shape of objects, enabling enhanced safety control and analysis.

Although prior research has shown that diverse high-level management teams can improve organizational performance, there is limited knowledge regarding the racial diversity among executive roles in US construction companies. This study analyzed the LinkedIn profiles of over 2,800 US executives from the engineering News Record's Top 400 list to assess racial diversity in executive roles within large construction companies. Researchers used Python deep face recognition to identify the profile race with over 97% accuracy. Results showed that less than 21% of construction executives came from non-white communities, with women occupying less than 10% of executive positions. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in how racial groups achieved leadership positions. However, male leaders from underrepresented racial groups had a greater gap compared to white male leaders than female leaders from different racial groups. The study provides insights that can help early and midlevel professionals model their career journeys, and diversification in leadership can benefit companies and their customers from an industry perspective.
