Historical documents, after being binarized, produce images that contain abundant broken pieces. The presence of these broken pieces naturally complicates the process of OCR and drastically drops the overall recognition accuracy. We propose a highly effective approach to recognize the broken characters using a heuristic enumerative method to find the optimal set partition of the broken pieces. Each subset of the optimal partition is mapped to the best character pattern and the overall image is recognized. Results obtained after performing experiments on a Thai Historical document and an American Historical document are quite promising. Given the generality of the method, it may be applicable to different language scripts given that a properly trained classifier has been developed for that script and font.

This work presents a framework for structuring knowledge using case-based reasoning (CBR). This framework provides a basis to develop the knowledge module that is represented by cases. Similarity measures can be used to compare and recover cases. The paper investigates the use of CBR in the domain module and also the influence of different measures when cases are compared and the modeling, where distinct attributes define different cases to represent an specific knowledge. A tutorial system to train helicopter pilots illustrates our approach as a case study.

Data replication has been widely used as a mean of increasing the data reliability of large-scale cloud storage systems where failures are normal. Aiming to provide cost-effective reliability, and improve performance of cloud storage, this paper presents a A replication algorithm with forward recovery referred to as RAFR. This algorithm considers the inefficiency of hardware and guarantee the system to approximate the break times of the data and take over data transmission, which makes the system more reliably. We implemented RAFR in Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and experiment results conclusively demonstrate that our RAFR is cost effective and outperforms default replication management of HDFS in terms of performance for large-scale cloud storage.

Anytime reconfigurability of computing systems is indispensable to persistent computing as well as ubiquitous/pervasive/cloud computing. To require that a computing system function continuously anytime entails that the computing system has to be reconfigured dynamically during its continuous running. This paper shows our approach to dynamic reconfiguration of persistent computing systems constructed based on soft system buses.
