The quantization codebook design is an essential part of the limited feedback scheme in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper, we provide a review of four different types of codebooks, namely, Grassmannian codebook, random vector quantization (RVQ) codebook, discrete Fourier transform (DFT) codebook and Lloyd codebook for beamforming in limited feedback MIMO systems. The design ideas of the four codebooks are discussed respectively. The codebook qualities are measured by the minimum and rootmean-square (rms) codeword distances. Performance comparison in terms of the capacity of the quantized beamforming MIMO systems based on the four different codebooks are given by simulation results.

Image segmentation method based on improved graph cut algorithm is proposed in this paper to improve the speed of graph cut and solve the watershed transformation over-segmentation phenomena. First, the image is segmented into a large number of small partitions making use of the watershed transformation. Then, a simplified network graph is constructed using the partition information. Finally, the graph cut algorithm is employed to realize network graph segmentation and get the segmentation results. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm not only solves the watershed transformation over-segmentation phenomena, but also improves the speed of the graph cut algorithm.

The automatic brightness control is a common functionality on the smartphone. Either Android phones or iPhones enable this capability by using the light sensor which located on the front panel. Unfortunately, the automatic brightness control is unsatisfactory on these two types of smartphones where the user always struggles with the brightness setup to adapt to the ambient light with various intensities. In this paper, a novel automatic brightness control method which is suitable for low illumination is proposed. We take advantage of the front panel camera on the smartphone and face detection technics to capture the image of user's face and background. With low ambient brightness, the proposed scheme calculates the contrast ratio between user's face and background to determine the optimum screen brightness.

The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Neural Networks have been successfully applied to several types of problem such as the difficult NP–hard problem, the optimization problem, and the knowledge discovery problem. This paper proposes the efficient hybrid improved ACO and Self– Organizing Map Neural Network (SOM) to solve the clustering problem. The advantages of this hybrid algorithm are to reduce the disadvantage of ACO and SOM and to provide high accuracy and robustness of cancer predictions. The effectiveness of this hybrid algorithm is illustrated through the results of some DNA microarray datasets and some well-known datasets such as Leukemia, Conlon Cancer, and Iris. The experimental results show that this hybrid algorithm provides high performance in clustering problems.
