This paper presents development and implementation of an improved input shaping technique for nonlinear systems. In this work, a nonlinear 3 dimensional gantry crane is considered where a complete nonlinear mathematical model of a lab-scaled gantry crane with variable cable length is simulated. An improved scheme for implementation of Unity Magnitude - Zero Vibration (UM-ZV) and Zero Vibration (ZV) shapers to shape the input signal in rising and falling edges is designed which enables an operator to move the gantry crane without problem with motion-induced sway. Simulation studies show that the proposed scheme resulted in lower overall sway for rail and trolley of the crane as compared to conventional shapers designed using gain-delay elements for payload sway reduction. Lower magnitudes of transient and residual sways are also achieved.

This paper discusses the implementation of current sensorless control algorithm for bidirectional half-bridge AC/DC converter that allows shaping inductor's current without current sensor. The operation of half-bridge converter has been simplified to an equivalent single-switch model that simplifies implementation of a digital controlsystem. The simulation results have confirmed the analytical assumptions and correctness of mathematical model.

Electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA) system has become one of the most prominent actuator in the past decades. Therefore, it is crucial to attain structural insight into the characteristics of the particular system. This paper presents system identification of EHA system using non-recursive or offline technique where the mathematical model is determined first by considering fixed supply pressure and load. Then, load variation is demonstrated to evaluate the parameter changes. Lastly, supply pressure is changed in order to show the significant effect in the model parameters. The finding shows that the load variation produces insignificant effect in the model parameters due to the limitations of the developed EHA system workbench. However, the supply pressure shows significant effect in the plant model parameters. As conclusion, the robustness and adaptability assessment in the controller design might be appropriately observed in future research works by using the supply variation for the existing EHA system workbench.

Offline handwritten digit recognition continues to be a fundamental research problem in document analysis and retrieval. The common method used in extracting handwritten mark from assessment forms is to assign a person to manually type in the marks into a spreadsheet. This method is found to be time consuming, not cost effective and prone to human mistakes. Thus, a number recognition system is developed using local binary pattern (LBP) technique to extract and convert students' identity numbers and handwritten marks on assessment forms into a spreadsheet. The training data contain three sets of LBP values for each digit. The recognition rate of handwritten digits using LBP is about 50% because LBP could not fully describe the structure of the digits. Instead, LBP is useful in term of scaling the digits `0 to 9' from the highest to the lowest similarity score as compared with the sample using chi square distance. The recognition rate can be greatly improved to about 95% by verifying the ranking of chi square distance with the salient structural features of digits.

Reversible logic is an emerging technique of upcoming future technologies. Low heat dissipation and energy recycle principle are encouraging its demand for low power daily usage portable devices. In this paper, two reversible gates have been proposed, named as R-I gate and R-II gate, for realizing reversible combinational logic circuits. The proposed two gates can be used for realisation of basic logical functions such as AND, XOR, MUX etc. Besides these functions, other advantage of the proposed R-I gate is that it can be used as a 1∶2 de-multiplexer without requiring any extra logic circuits and the proposed R-II gate can be used as a half adder circuit. The proposed reversible gates are implemented and verified using Xilinx ISE 10.1 software. The simulation results show that the proposed designs are more efficient in terms of gate count, garbage outputs and constant inputs than the existing reversible logic gates.

Software agents are known to assist humans in handling many complex systems. Currently, there are consciousness among researchers in software agents to continuously find ways to instill human traits in software agents' behaviors. Sincere behavior is one of the many noble human behaviors that one could consider to be adapted in software agents. Research show that sincerity culture within organizational communities helps organizations produce high quality services or products. To adapt humans' sincere behavior in software agents we conduct a study on the factors of humans' sincere behavior. The study entails a questionnaire survey based on 20 items that solicit self-evaluation of sincerity factors in the working environment. Factor analysis of the survey results shows that there are four factors that influence humans' sincere behavior in the work place: (1) passion in doing the job, (2) integrity towards the organization, (3) positive behavior, and (4) sacrifice. The findings would be useful for instilling human sincere behavior in software agents.

This paper presents the tuning of PID control parameters for position feedback control of motor and the position reference design for grasping task by a 7-degree of freedom (DOF) three-fingered robotic hand. The system of the robotic hand consists of DC-motors, magnetic encoder and a motion controller unit. The robotic hand has three fingers where each finger has two joints and two links made of perspective plastic material. The PID tuning is implemented to all six motors that are used to move all joints of the three fingers. Trial and error method is used for tuning the parameter of PID control to improve the transient response performance of the motors. For the position reference design, a set of position data is identified to produce the grasping trajectory for all finger joints. The trajectory for the robotic hand performs two types of finger configuration for grasping two different shapes of household solid objects. Both works were implemented via programming in Motion Manager Application. It has been observed that the robot hand has performed well with the tuned PID parameters by reducing the overshoot, rise time (T r ), peak time (T p ), settling time (T s ) and steady state error (e ss ). Besides, the robot hand has also succeeded the grasping task with the proposed position reference trajectory.

The main aim of optimal schedule of traditional water distribution system is to reduce energy consumption, without consideration of minimizing network leakage. This research is on the premise of meeting water demand, pressure and quality, at same time taking the minimization of network leakage and power consumption as the optimization objectives, taking pump and valve opening and closing as decision variables, to build leakage control model of multi-source water distribution system by optimal pump schedule. On the basis of this model, the partition scheme and pump scheduling of water supply system are determined;the NSGA-algorithm is used for solving the optimisation problem. By applying it to practical water supply network in HD city, the results showed thatthis method can simultaneously reduce power consumption and network leakage.
