the paper presents an integrated information system for monitoring current state of natural resources and providing valuable help by assisting decisions makers in critical situations. The specific case studied is from the domain of water resources management but the architecture is easily adaptable to suit other types of natural resources (e.g. soil, air). The key points of the proposed solutions are standardization, web services and cloud computing.

This paper is based on a research project regarding the design and development of an Intelligent Haptic Robot-Glove (IHRG) for the rehabilitation of the patients that have a diagnosis of a cerebrovascular accident. The IHRG is an exoskeleton that supports the human hand and hand activities by using a control architecture for dexterous grasping and manipulation. This IHRG is a medical device that acts in parallel to a hand in order to compensate some lost function. A novel approach for the development of an exoskeleton assistive hand is considered, a "mechatronic approach" for the integration of the mechanical structure, the sensory, the actuation system and the virtual and controlsystem.

In mental stress studies, cerebral activation and autonomic nervous system are important distinctly. This study aims to analyze disparities associated with scalp potential, which may have impact on autonomic activation of heart during mental stress. Ten healthy subjects participated in this study that performed arithmetic tasks in stress and control environment. Task difficulty was calculated from their correct responses. During the experiment, electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals were recorded concurrently. Sympathetic innervation of heart was estimated from heart rate (HR), which is extracted from the ECG. The value of theta Fz/alpha Pz was measured from EEG scalp potential. The results show a significant surge in the value of theta Fz/alpha Pz in stress as compared to baseline (p<0.013) and control (p<0.042). The results also present tachycardia while in stress as compared to baseline (p<0.05). Task difficulty in stress is also considerably higher than control environment (p<0.003).

This paper addresses the problem of developing an autonomous cooperative multi-vehicle system composed of one simple low-cost unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) guided by a more capable, sensor-equipped, surface or underwater vehicle. Specifically, in this work we consider a system composed of an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) able to localize a small-sized UUV via a multibeam sonar and, then, to guide it via an acoustic link to reach a target. The UUV is equipped with low-cost navigation sensors (a compass and a depth sensor), and to estimate its own position relies on the data received by the ASV (range and bearing from the ASV and ASV position). This paradigm was applied in the domain of mine countermeasures (MCM) to realize the NATO CMRE Autonomous Mine Neutralization system. In this system the low-cost feature of the UUV is of the most importance since the UUV is supposed to be expendable. In this approach, however, there may be cases in which the underwater vehicle cannot be detected by the sonar for extended time periods causing drifts in the UUV position estimate, potentially compromising the mission. This paper presents a set of behaviors to address this situation. The behaviors coordinate ASV circular search patterns together with sending to the UUV purposely generated navigation updates. The aim is to limit the distance between the two vehicles, increasing the probability of sonar reacquisition, and at the same time ensuring that the UUV progresses toward the target. Results from sea trials held in Elba island (Italy) during ANT12 experiments (in June 2012) are reported, and demonstrate the approach is effective and can push our system toward full autonomy.

With the development of the social economy, more and more appliances have been presented in a house. It comes out a problem that how to manage and control these increasing various appliances efficiently and conveniently so as to achieve more comfortable, security and healthy space at home. In this paper, a smart controlsystem base on the technologies of internet of things has been proposed to solve the above problem. The smart home controlsystem uses a smart central controller to set up a radio frequency 433 MHz wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN). A series of control modules, such as switch modules, radio frequency control modules, have been developed in the WSAN to control directly all kinds of home appliances. Application servers, client computers, tablets or smart phones can communicate with the smart central controller through a wireless router via a Wi-Fi interface. Since it has WSAN as the lower control layer, a appliance can be added into or withdrawn from the controlsystem very easily. The smart controlsystem embraces the functions of appliance monitor, control and management, home security, energy statistics and analysis.

This paper presents the application of firefly algorithm (FA) as load frequency control optimization technique in the interconnected reheat thermal power system. The FA is relatively a new optimization technique based on swarm intelligence. This paper investigates the efficiency and robustness of the FA as the optimization technique for a PID controller under three different loading scenarios. Investigation is carried out by comparing the performance of FA based PID against a conventional PID controller. Simulation results shows that the FA based PID performs better than the conventional PID controller. The proposed controller optimization is able to find the optimal gains of the LFC. The results indicate that the FA is robust and has good tuning capability.

Nowadays, the use of electronic control units are limited in applications that require high safety integrity. Therefore, to satisfy the conditions for applications requiring high reliability, control circuits are used instead of digital electronic control units like PLCs. Due to the lack of efficient, simple and applicable methods in the literature, design of control circuits are mainly based on heuristic methods. In this study, existing problems related to the application of the known formal methods will be examined and an effective solution will be proposed.

In this paper we study a posteriori error estimates of all discretization parameters for quadratic convex optimal control problems governed by integro-differential equations by using the variational discretization mixed finite element methods. The state and co-state are approximated by the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element spaces and the control is not approximated. By applying some error estimates results of mixed finite element methods for integro-differential equations, we derive a posteriori error estimates both for the coupled state and the control approximation of the optimal control problem.

In this work, a systematic strategy to design passive damping systems for structural vibration control is presented. The proposed design methodology is based on the equivalence between decentralized static velocity-feedback controllers and passive damping systems. By using recent developments in static output-feedback control, the design of passive-damping systems can be formulated as a single optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality constraints. Moreover, this optimization problem can be efficiently solved with standard numerical tools, even for large dimension systems. Due to its computational effectiveness, the proposed methodology can be applied to the design of passive damping systems for large structures. To illustrate the main ideas and methods, a passive damping system is designed for the seismic protection of a five-story building with excellent results.
