This paper describes the performance of four crossover operators used in evolving the required controllers in a video game. The crossover operators used in this research are the two-point crossover, the uniform crossover, the N-point crossover, and the single-point crossover. The performance of these crossover methods were tested using Infinite Mario Bros game. This video game was chosen due to the dynamicity and complexity of the game. This paper also presents a newly designed nondeterministic based Finite State Machine (FSM) method. The Mario character uses the proposed FSM as its strategy in the game. The proposed FSM is then optimized using a modified Genetic Algorithm (GA). The results showed that the required controllers were generated successfully using the proposed method. The results also showed that the N-point crossover performed well compared to the uniform crossover, the two-point crossover and the single-point crossover methods.

Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is a classic method in reliability and safety engineering. With the increase of system scale and complexity, the amount of work is heavily loaded. Thus the computer aided FTA method is important for related analysis. Existing computer aided FTA analysis methods invariably confront combinatorial problems which are computationally expensive and often with exponential increase of complexity, especially when it comes to large scale fault trees. In this paper, we propose a method based on the Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) with new conversion rules which are derived from the Component Connection Method. Besides, the Depth First Search (DFS) is applied to generate MCSs (Minimal Cut Sets). In the end, the Zone controller of the CBTC (Communication Based Train control) system is analyzed in case study. The result proves that the application of our new algorithm, of linear complexity, is more efficient than the algorithm of verifying all possible basic event combinations, both in computation speed and memory usage.

As a preliminary step to achieve a long-term goal of developing an automatic dental preparation system for clinical operations, we design and build a miniature robotic system which can manipulate a laser beam to move in three dimensional spaces to remove hard tissue from a target tooth. The dental preparation requires the robotic system to own high accuracy, high ablation speed and small size. A 2D galvanometer scanners module is integrated to meet the requirement of a high moving speed of the laser focus. A closed-loop system based on a miniature-sized voice-coil motor and a grating ruler are developed to realize the accurate control of the focus. The overall size of the developed prototype is 108mmx56mmx43mm, which is small enough to be used in close proximity to a patient's mouth. The prototype has been tested by using two different kinds of laser generators, i.e. E a nanosecond laser and a picosecond laser. The experiment results show that the robotic system can provide high moving speed of 1000mm/s with good shape accuracy. From the results, we found that nanosecond laser beam can be controlled to ablate zirconia and aluminum, but not suitable to ablate tooth because of tissue carbonization. By selecting suitable parameters of the picosecond laser generator, a target tooth could be ablated to produce a cylinder shape without carbonization. Limitations of the prototype are identified according to the experiment results.

Knee-FES-ergometer for knee swinging exercise is introduced as a hybrid exercise for restoration of function of the knee for stroke patients through the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES). The aim of the new knee-FES-ergometer is to provide high intensity knee swinging exercise. It is able to reduce required electrical stimulation and will able to elongate the exercise duration while avoiding early muscle fatigue. Fuzzy logic control (FLC) is used to control the knee trajectory for the purpose of smooth knee swinging exercise. However, conventional FLC rely on human experiences and trial and error for parameter identifications. In this work, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to tune the FLC to maintain a smooth swinging exercise. The performance of the proposed GA tuned FLC is compared with a manually tuned FLC. Results shows that the GA tuned FLC offers encouragingly better performance.

In this paper a practical control scheme is discussed for the positioning and tracking control of a one mass rotary system. The practical controller designed must have high speed performance, high accuracy, robust to disturbance and parameter variation and have high positioning response which always welcome to industry. Hence, a Nominal Characteristic Trajectory control (NCTF) controller has been proposed to yield high motion control performance and high robustness. This controller does not require exact model and parameter identification which make it easy to design. Basically, NCTF controller consists of a simple structure comprising Nominal Characteristic Trajectory (NCT) and Proportional Integral (PI) Compensator. Apart from a Conventional NCTF controller, the NCTF controller also improves to Continuous Motion NCTF (CM-NCTF) controller. CM-NCTF controller has same design procedure as Conventional NCTF controller and it is able to produce a slightly better performance than the conventional one by producing slightly faster response and smooth tracking performance. To evaluate the controller performance, the Conventional NCTF controller and CM-NCTF controller, was compared to PID control through experiment.
