The purposes or functions of the commercial car suspension system are to take care on the car body weight, to isolate the car body from road profiles disturbance and to maintain the grip force between the wheel and road profiles. The Composite Nonlinear Feedback (CNF) control law is proposed in this comparative study between conventional linear model and Macpherson model. The control performance consists of velocity of car body, suspension deflection, wheel deflection and velocity of a car wheel. The main measurement in this study is the acceleration of the car body. The Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and passive model are involved in this control performance is for comparison purposes. The mathematical model of linear model and MacPherson model are focused on the quarter car model active suspension system. The simulation work is done by using MATLAB and SIMULINK to see the control performance on the quarter car active suspension model. In this paper we can conclude that the CNF achieved the main objective of active suspension which is the ride comfort and road handling. © 2012 ieee.

In many industrial manufacturers, the quality of product heavily depends on control loop performance. Oscillations in control loop decreases performance of their systems. This is made worse with the increased number of control loops in a control process. There are several reasons for oscillations such as poor controller tuning, oscillating load or disturbances with a high-frequency. However, the most common reason for oscillations is friction in the valve. This paper presents a brief summary of some effective methods of detection of stiction in control loops and the compensation techniques to mitigate this effect. The aim is to determine the appropriate model of stiction in order to design a proper controller to prevent oscillations in the control loops. Based on the literature, Data Driven model with fewer parameters provides simpler solution and is the most common method used in comparison with physical based model which presents a number of unknown physical parameters. Moreover, previous methods (even in data-driven models) were based on some assumptions and thus their judgments are not reliable when the assumptions were not satisfied. From this study too, it is seen that numerous methods of stiction detection are available. Hence, it is suggested that the future research emphasis should be more on compensation of stiction especially for nonlinear processes. © 2012 ieee.

With the increased number of electrical appliances in our daily life, Radio Frequency (RF) emission of electrical appliances and its general effects have imposed a great challenge to researchers dealing with human health and power quality of electrical supplies. Even though studying the general effects of the RF emission from electrical appliances is important, it would be beneficial to study the characteristics of the generated signals and how they differ from one appliance to another. Hence, the aim of this paper is to investigate the signal structure and magnitude variation of the RF signals emitted from electrical appliances. Six electrical appliances were tested and their RF emission was recorded consecutively. The emitted signals were captured using an Active-loop antenna with a range of 1 KHz to 30 MHz and a spectrum analyzer of Agilent E4411B model. Experiment results showed that all the tested appliances emit noticeable and unique RF signals when operating. © 2012 ieee.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) - induced limb movement is believed to provide therapeutic benefits for stroke patients. However, direct stimulation for a continuous repetitive movement can cause early muscle fatigue and ruin the patients desire to continue exercising. In this study, a model of a FES-assisted knee ergometer was developed to utilize the voluntary non-paretic leg movement to assist the FES-induced paretic leg of stroke patients. A 'changing-in-direction' knee movement mechanism driven by a bevel gearbox allows the paretic knee to extend with energy contributed from the flexed non-paretic leg. This novel ergometer helps to reduce about 43% of the required electrical stimulation. Although the present study did not include the incorporation of the muscle model, its applicability in reducing muscle fatigue can be expected. The reduced electrical stimulation with the aid of the ergometer was able to perform full knee extension and this action was repetitively controlled with a PID controller. A repetitive FES-induced knee exercise was performed and the maximum error between the actual and reference knee trajectories was recorded to be as lower as 2.7°. It was shown that the knee ergometer which allows the utilization of the voluntary non-paretic movement had reduced the required stimulation to perform repetitive knee extension of the paretic leg. © 2012 ieee.

The teleoperation systems involving cooperative multi-robots to cope with different tasks on a single target with a team of homogeneous robots have been developed with (1) modified potential field based leader-follower formation, (2) adaptive multi-robotic impedances, (3) compensation for contact forces. However, most of the homeland security applications, e.g. military reconnaissance, exploration, and etc, need a team of heterogeneous robots to work on the multi-task simultaneously on the multi-target with a robot-task-target pairing. Therefore, the main contribution of this paper is to propose the cooperative teleoperation control method integrating not only (1-3) but also the robot-task-target pairing for a multi-robot multi-task multi-target defensive application. The robot-task-target pairing is derived from the proven auction algorithm for multi-robot multi-task multi-target cases, which optimizes effects-based robot-task-target pairing based on a heuristic algorithm. The pairing method for the robot-task-target pairing is developed to produce a weighted attack guidance table (WAGT), which includes the benefits of assignments of robotic combinations (subteams) to tasks and targets. Therefore, the optimal robot-task-target pairs are computed based on WAGT with the heuristic algorithm. Simulation studies illustrate the efficacy of the teleoperation system with the proposed control method for multi-task multi-target scenarios. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Apparently weed is a major menace in crop production as it competes with crops for nutrients, moisture, space and light which resulting in poor growth and development of the crop and finally yield. Yield loss accounts for even more than 70 % when crops grown under unweeded condition with severe weed infestation. There are several weed control measures being practiced in crop production, they are physical, mechanical, biological and chemical methods. Weed Management plays vital role in agriculture and horticulture production and economic benefits derived by agricultural industry. Weed is controlled mainly by application of herbicides. Weeds are not uniformly distributed in the crop and uncropped fields and mostly they are found in patches. With the help of Color and growth parameters, the weeds and crops may not be distinguished in the fields for the reasons of imbalance in availability of nutrients, water and other environmental resources. Weed control need to be done at the early stage of the crop growth. The management of weeds with in the field is imperative. Weed management practices using chemical tools propose to apply herbicide in the dosage strictly necessary based on weed infestation and location or position. Currently research is carried out relating to identification of weed spices and the location of the weed occurrence with the aims to allow accurate weeding and apply herbicides based on the weed density. Machine vision system, remote sensing and aerial imaging techniques are used for control weeds. Sensor attached electromagnetic system, imaging spectra radiometer and spectrometer can also be used to identify weeds for effective weed control. Almost all the existing weed detection methods process the captured image by segmentation of vegetation against background (soil), detection of weed vegetation pixels. We need to prepare robots for the shift from laboratories and industrial environments to join human residential areas. This is one of the reasons why current trends in the field of human-robot interaction are expanding into the social experience of users often involving artificial emotions. Emotional technology in its two forms - as an expression of artificial emotions of the systems and as systems capable of recognizing human emotions - contributes to the creation of personalized systems. We try to move from the knowledge about human emotional processes to implement a model of artificial emotions based on Plutchik's theories. The emotional model is a part of the autonomous mode for the humanoid robot. The proposed system is able to adapt to the user's expectations and thus, to evolve during the interaction process. The inputs to the system are user's expressions of emotions detected from his/her body movements and gestures. Fuzzy logic approach is used for blending of basic emotions to primary mixed emotions. We used humanoid robot Nao as an experimental setup and the user's expressions are mapped to the humanoid's body. The expressions are used to communicate robot's internal states much like non-verbal signals indicates feelings in human society. As the experiments show, the personalized expressions help users to understand the system and they improve the human-robot interaction. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In order to inspect the visual defects of polymer polarizer, an off-line automatic optical system (AOI) is proposed in this paper. It employs a plane CCD camera to capture the image of polarizer, and the Vision-Development-Module (VDM) © to process and analyze the image. Simple algorithm to determine the key parameters, such as the range of gray level equalization and the segmentation threshold, is implemented in the LabVIEW2012©. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the algorithm, and classification, location and size of visual defects are extracted successfully.
