Monash Vision Group is developing a bionic eye based on implanting 7-11 small tiles into the visual cortex. Each tile has 43 active electrodes on its base, and a wirelessly powered electronic system to decode control signals and drive the electrodes with biphasic pulses. The tiles are fed with power and data using a common transmitting coil at the back of the patient's head. Sophisticated image processing, described in a companion paper, ensures that the user experiences maximum benefit from the small number of electrodes. This paper describes the progress in the first three years (2010-2012) of this four-year project.

The nature of the traffic in industrial control system network is markedly different from more open networks. Industrial control system networks should be far more restricted in what types of traffic diversity is present. This enables the usage of approaches that are currently not as feasible in open environments, such as machine learning based anomaly detection. Without proper customization for the special requirements of industrial control system network environment many existing anomaly or misuse detection systems will perform sub-optimally. Machine learning based approach would reduce the amount of manual customization required for different restricted network environments of which an industrial control system network is an good example of. In this paper we present an initial analysis of data received from a ethernet network of a live running industrial site. This includes both control data and the data flowing between the control network and the office network. A set of possible features to be used for detecting anomalies is studied for this environment.

In order to ensure the safety of the vehicle driving, the vehicle braking performance detection system was studied. On the basis of analyzing the structure and principle of vehicle performance detection system, and according to the control logic relation of the general test system, the overall plan was brought forward by using MCU as the controller. The various parts of the hardware circuit were designed and the software was implemented in accordance with the system function. The experiment result quantitatively shows that the vehicle braking performance detection system can live up to the design requirements. The detection performance indicators are in line with the relevant provisions and actual requirements, and the system can provide theoretical basis for vehicle detection and fault diagnosis.

Affective computing is computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions. It has lots of applications in the next generation of human-computer interfaces. We have proposed a closed-loop affective computing system, which includes affect recognition, affect modeling, and affect control. Because emotions include both intra-personal uncertainty, which is the uncertainty a person has about an emotion, and inter-personal uncertainty, which results from the fact that different people have different perceptions and expressions of the same emotion, it is promising to use fuzzy sets and systems, especially type-2 fuzzy sets and systems, to handle these uncertainties in an affective computing system. This paper introduces four applications of affective computing, reviews some recent advances on the application of fuzzy sets and systems to affect recognition, modeling, and control, and points out some new research directions. It will be very useful to both the fuzzy logic research community and the affective computing research community, especially to researchers working at the intersection of these two areas.

Our institution has on-going research projects which utilize autonomous mobile robots in a variety of settings. These robots navigate and interact with humans and their environment. As part of this effort a framework to integrate the navigational operation and the speech interaction to react to contextual stimuli is provided. This framework provides a system which is easy to configure and modify. The basis of this framework blends the rationale of human nature with the interpretation of sensor inputs. This combination of real-time and environmental information is at the core of having situational awareness. Context-based mapping allows the system to learn an environmental context and how to identify it from real-time interaction. Context-based mapping techniques link data prioritized by contextual value to physical locations on a visual or representative map. This system categorizes objects and events in an adaptive way. By determining the appropriate behavior in a given situation, a mobile robot uses only the relevant knowledge and data. This information is stored to allow both historical and real-time data to be used as appropriate. This approach allows the robot to access the previously collected data for statistical reference. As data are collected from various sensory inputs, the weighted contribution in that context is determined. This research examined the deployment of an autonomous mobile robot. The robot was able to function in the environment, which included both indoor and outdoor settings. Speech was used for input and as response explanations by the robot. The robot was trained initially in a supervised mode, but after the heuristics and adjustments had been reached, the robot was able to balance the sensors appropriately and learn without supervision. The result was a robot that could navigate autonomously and respond to the environment appropriately. Adopting a hand gesture based appliance control system would be a virtuous idea for smart homes. However, complexity of the home background makes it challenging to work such systems in real home environments. In this paper, we present developing a robust system which can practically be used in complex backgrounds. The users are required to wear neither wristbands nor long-sleeved garments. In order to achieve this, we use TRS moment invariants combined with Viola-Jones object detection framework. We demonstrate the performance of the system in different complex backgrounds by controlling a pedestal fan. © 2012 ieee.

The mechanical design, electronics and the control program developed in order to perform, automatically, the deposition of crystalline layers on substrates using the liquid phase epitaxy technique is described. The implementation of the system includes the hardware and control software of the substrate movements, the gas flow system, the temperature program and the monitoring of the main physical variables such as temperature, humidity, flow, pressure etc. The movement the substrate is done by means of a solenoid whose core is coupled to the slider of the graphite boat. This system was proposed in order to maintain the hermeticity of the system which is vital to achieve the epitaxial growth and to decrease the power of the electric motor that drives the solenoid.

Modern control theory is one of the basic professional course for the senior undergraduates, such as automation, electrical engineering and automation specialties. It has the characteristics of higher theoretical definition and abstraction, bigger calculated amount, degree of depth and complexity, and the students should have well-knit mathematical foundation. The study can be made more interesting and challenging by introducing the simulation technology into course teaching. By applying MATLAB language and Simulink simulation tools, combining with the teaching examples, the system synthesis design problem in modern control theory course can be dealt with very easy. A closed-loop control system with full-order state observer is designed. The design process shows that fundamental changes in modern control theory course teaching have been made by MATLAB language and Simulink tools. The teaching process is converged to the combination of practical engineering case and vivid teaching from original dry pure theory teaching.

This paper presents an application of genetic algorithms to the improvement of voltage sags indices by reconfiguration of an electrical system. Considering known reference indices of voltage sags at system buses, the proposed methodology leads to a new configuration where the buses with previous indices of voltage sags outside the range of the reference values are reduced in order to minimize these values. In this paper, in order to streamline the solution process the Genetic Algorithm Matlab Toolbox (R) was used to solve the formulated optimization problem. The performance of the proposed methodology is assessed by means of case studies applied in the ieee 24-bus Reliability Test system and in the ieee 118-bus Test system.
