system lifetime is the crucial problem of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), and exploiting environmental energy provides a potential solution for this problem. When considering self-powered systems, the Power Manager (PM) plays an important role in energy harvesting WSNs. Instead of minimizing the consumption energy as in the case of battery powered systems, it makes the harvesting node converge to Energy Neutral Operation (ENO) to achieve a theoretically infinite lifetime and maximize the system performance. In this paper, a low complexity PM with a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller is introduced. This PM monitors the buffered energy in the storage device and performs adaptation by changing the wake-up period of the wireless node. This shows the interest of our approach since the impractical monitoring harvested energy as well as consumed energy is not required as it is the case in other previously proposed techniques. Experimental results are performed on a real WSN platform with two solar cells in an indoor environment. The PID controller provides a practical strategy for long-term operations of the node in various environmental conditions.

We present preliminary results of a one degree of freedom (DOF) linear moving force augmenting device (FAD) with a force sensor for enhancing the lifting capabilities of a human user. We perform a stability test of the feedback loop formed by the device and a model of the human operator. It is shown that the operator lifts a small fraction of the total weight of the load. This work presents the design of a discontinuous output regulator for a DC-to-AC power conversion problem on a boost converter, for asymptotic output trajectory tracking. The steady state reference signal for the inductor current is proposed as an approximated solution of the well known Francis-Isidori-Byrnes equations, then, by a proper selection of a sliding surface one can stabilize the non-minimum phase inductor current tracking variable. Network delays are inevitable in networked controlsystems and have negative effects on system performance and stability. To compensate network delay actively, a novel networked predictive control scheme based on a state observer is proposed in this paper. A state observer reconstructs the current states using the delayed output and gains of the state observer are designed using LMI methods. Stability conditions of the closed-loop networked predictive controlsystem are derived. Using these conditions, less conservative upper bound of delay, which guarantees the asymptotic stability of the system, is obtained. The evaluation illustrates the effectiveness of the control strategy.

Chaos synchronization is a phenomenon that occurs when a chaotic system drives another chaotic system. If a certain chaotic system is called the master system and another chaotic system is called the slave system, then anti-synchronization is said to occur when the state vectors of the master and slave systems have the same amplitude but opposite signs. This paper derives an important result for the anti-synchronization of identical chaotic systems using sliding mode control. This main result has been established using Lyapunov stability theory. In robust controlsystems, the sliding mode control (SMC) is often preferred in view of its inherent advantages such as easy realization, fast response, good transient performance and also insensitivity to parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. As an application of this general result, this paper solves the anti-synchronization problem for identical Wang-Chen chaotic systems (2012) via sliding mode control. Numerical simulations using MATLAB have been presented in detail to validate the sliding controller design for achieving anti-synchronization of identical Wang-Chen chaotic systems.

In video conferencesystem, the multimedia gateway plays an important role in forwarding audio and video data, whose performance is a bottleneck of the system. A flexible framework of cloud-based video conference multi-gateway system is proposed to meet the needs of a high-definition video conferencesystem, which can control a variety of virtual gateway resources based on physical devices, thus multimedia gateways can be deployed dynamically. In addition, a real-time user migration strategy is designed and implemented based on the framework, which combines active pattern with passive pattern. The experiments show that the user migration strategy could control the time delay of user migration under 65 milliseconds, ensure the continuity of audio and video data during user migration, and successfully solve the reliability problems caused by system shutdown or overload of the multimedia gateway.

This paper discusses a versatile wheelchair controlsystem of potential use to complete quadriplegics. This system employs plug-in components using a common control protocol between the distributed computers. Two headset plug-in units have been developed together with two prototype wheelchairs and an automatic shopping trolley. The trolley would be of most use to a paraplegic, but suggestions are made to show how this could potentially be developed to plug into the controlsystem as a type of “personal assistant”. The system has been prototyped using language-independent commands so that it can potentially be used by quadriplegics speaking any of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken on Earth. LEGO MindStorms NXT equipment has been used to prototype this system.
