Depth image-based rendering (DIBR) techniques are advanced tools in 3-D video (3DV) applications that are used to synthesize a number of additional views in a multiview-video-plus-depth (MVD) representation. The MVD format consists of video and depth sequences for a limited number of original camera views of the same scene. An inherent problem of the view synthesis concept is given by image information that is occluded in the original views and becomes visible, in the extrapolated views. To handle these disoc-clussions, we propose a DIBR algorithm with advanced inpainting methods. Our renderer enhances visual experience by taking spatial and temporal texture consistency problems into account. In order to compensate the global motion in a sequence, image registration is incorporated into the framework. The proposed method shows objective and subjective gains compared to the state-of-the-art.

Increasing image sharpness and thus improving the visual quality is an important task in multiview image and video processing. We propose a novel super-resolution approach for multiview images in a mixed-resolution setup that is robust to various depth map distortions. The considered distortion scenarios may be caused by an inaccurate calibration of the depth camera or a limitation of depth range. Our method is based on a refined high-frequency synthesis that relies on a blockwise and depth-dependant low-frequency registration. The refinement step efficiently adapts the high-frequency content from a neighboring high-resolution camera to a low-resolution view and thereby compensates the displacement caused by depth inaccuracies. In case of undistorted depth maps, the results show that our algorithm leads to a PSNR gain of up to 1.33 dB with respect to a comparable unrefined super-resolution approach for a mixed-resolution multiview video plus depth format. Compared to the initial low-resolution view, a PSNR gain of up to 2.61 dB is obtained. In case of distorted depth maps, a PSNR gain of even 4.78 dB is achieved with respect to the reference superresolution algorithm. The PSNR gains get confirmed by the corresponding SSIM values which manifest a similar behaviour. The improvement of visual quality is also convincingly for all considered scenarios.

visual speech recognition or lip reading is an approach for noise robust speech recognition by adding speaker's visual cues to audio information. Basically visual-only speech recognition is applicable to speaker verification and multimedia interface for supporting speaking impaired person. The sequential mouth-shape code method is an effective approach of lip reading for particularly uttered Japanese words by utilizing two kinds of distinctive mouth shapes, known as first and last mouth shapes, appeared intermittently. One advantage of this method is its low computational burden for the learning and word registration processes. This paper proposes a novel word lip recognition system by detecting and determining initial mouth-shape codes to recognize uttering consonants. The proposed method eventually is able to discriminate different words consisting of the same sequential vowel codes though containing different consonant codes. The conducted experiments demonstrate that the proposed system provides higher recognition rate than the conventional ones.

Objects in real-life recorded image sequences exhibit rotation along with linear motion. This should be taken into consideration when doing super-resolution work on video sequences. The work presented here involves determination of motion-vector field that includes rotation of blocks in the registration step which is the most important step of the super-resolution restoration work. Results of proposed approach are compared against the results that uses exhaustive block search that does not consider rotation. Compared approaches are applied upon low resolution sequences generated from their high resolution counterparts via downsampling. Comparison is done over the peak-signal-to-noise-ratios (psnr) of the output images with improved resolution. visual quality assessment is also performed.

Secret image sharing based on Shamir's secret sharing scheme provides fault tolerance and trust to group policy during transmission of secret images over networks. After its initial use, research is focused on improving both visual quality of stego images accommodating shared values and authentication mechanism ensuring correctness of stego images. Most of the methods use LSB embedding to hide shared values and authentication bits into cover images. Reversible steganography is used with LSB embedding and Shamir's scheme to make shares meaningful in this paper. LSB embedding is used to generate an intermediate stego image hiding most significant four bits of the elements of shared values vector. Least significant four bits of the elements and authentication value generated for shared values vector are embedded into the histogram of the intermediate stego image using reversible Steganography. Proposed scheme ensures improved PSNR compared to other works reported in the literature by using both LSB embedding and reversible Steganography together. Experimental results indicate that stego images have approximately 48 dB PSNR.

In this paper, an efficient data hiding scheme for printed color images is proposed that visualizes on printed color images embedded data that is invisible on a monitor. We accomplished this scheme by using the differences of color gamut between a monitor and printer. The proposed scheme visualizes embedded data by converting one piece of color information, either L*, a*, or b*, to a fixed value when printing. This feature can be easily applied to copyright protection for printed images. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our scheme.

In this study, an automatic and rule based approach which extracts bridges over water in satellite images is developed. To find the bridges in the image, possible water regions are first found using thresholding and clustering methods. Candidate bridge regions are then extracted by applying morphological operations to the water mask. Also the algorithm proposes an optional verification step that uses geometric constraints and orientation information to increase precision values. The proposed algorithm is tested on different satellite images and the quantitative and visual results that were obtained showed that the algorithm is effective on extracting bridges of different sizes.

Wireless visual Sensor Network (WVSN) is formed by deploying many visual Sensor Nodes (VSNs) in the field. The VSNs acquire images of the area of interest in the field, perform some local processing on these images and transmit the results using an embedded wireless transceiver. The energy consumption on transmitting the results wirelessly is correlated with the information amount that is being transmitted. The images acquired by the VSNs contain huge amount of data due to many kinds of redundancies in the images. Suitable bi-level image compression standards can efficiently reduce the information amount in images and will thus be effective in reducing the communication energy consumption in the WVSN. But compression capability of the bi-level image compression standards is limited to the underline compression algorithm. Further data reduction can be achieved by detecting Region of Interest (ROI) in the bi-level images and then coding these ROIs using bi-level image compression method. We explored the compression performance of the lossless ROI detection and coding method for various kinds of changes such as different shapes, locations and number of objects in the continuous set of frames. The CCITT Group 4, JBIG2 and Gzip are used for coding the detected ROIs. We concluded that CCITT Group 4 is a better choice for coding the ROIs in the Bi-level images because of its comparatively good compression performance and less computational complexity. This paper is intended to be a resource for the researchers interested in reducing the amount of data in the bi-level images for energy constrained WVSNs.

This paper presents an interactive biomedical image retrieval system based on automatic visual region-of-interest (ROI) extraction and classification into visual concepts. In biomedical articles, authors often use annotation markers such as arrows, letters or symbols overlaid on figures and illustrations in the articles to highlight ROIs. These annotations are then referenced and correlated with concepts in the caption text or figure citations in the article text. This association creates a bridge between the visual characteristics of important regions within an image and their semantic interpretation. Our proposed method at first localizes and recognizes the annotations by utilizing a combination of rule-based and statistical image processing techniques. Identifying these assists in extracting ROIs that are likely to be highly relevant to the discussion in the article text. The image regions are then annotated for classification using biomedical concepts obtained from a glossary of imaging terms. Similar automatic ROI extraction can be applied to query images, or user may interactively mark an ROI. As a result of our method, visual characteristics of the ROIs can be mapped to text concepts and then used to search image captions. In addition, the system can toggle the search process from purely visual to a textual one (cross-modal) or integrate both visual and textual search in a single process (multi-modal) based on utilizing user feedback. The hypothesis, that such approaches would improve biomedical image retrieval, is validated through experiments on a biomedical article dataset of thoracic CT scans from the collection of imageCLEF'2010 medical retrieval track.
