High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the latest international standard of video coding under development. In HEVC, the new technology of intra prediction, Unified Directional Intra (UDI), has shown significant improvement on coding performance. Comparing to the intra prediction of H.264/AVC, significant performance improvement was observed for all intra configured tests [2]. In the HEVC Test Model (HM), a predefined angular table is used for generating predicted sample values of UDI. However, how the table is obtained was not clearly presented in the literature. This paper gives a detailed derivation and explanation based on a novel uniform probability model. With this novel model, angular table derivation method was investigated and the selection of table entries used in UDI prediction is well explained. Simulation results show that using the improved angular table proposed in this paper, Bjontegaard Delta (BD)-rate improvement is achieved for sequences with large amount of various textures, in both all intra high efficiency and low complexity configurations.

image denoising plays a fundamental role in many image processing applications. Utilizing sparse representation and non-local averaging together is such a successful framework that leads to considerable progress in denoising. Almost all the newly proposed denoising algorithms are built base on it, different in detailed implementation, and the denoising performance seems converging. What is the denoising bound of this framework turns into a key question. In this paper, we assume all the possible algorithms under the framework can be approximated by a fixed two steps denoising process with different parameters. Step one cluster geometric similar image patches into groups so that patches within each group could be sparse represented under the basis of the group. Step two use the atoms of the group basis and radiometric similar patches of each patch for non-local averaging. The parameters of the process are the cluster number, the atoms and the number of radiometric similar patches for estimating each patch. Finally, the bound is derived as the minimum denoising error of all the possible parameters. Comparing with previous bounds, the new one is image specific and more practical. Experiment results show that there still exists room to improve the denoising performance for natural images.

Blocking artifact, characterized by visually noticeable changes in pixel values along block boundaries, is a common problem in block-based image/video compression, especially at low bitrate coding. Various post-processing techniques have been proposed to reduce blocking artifacts, but they usually introduce excessive blurring or ringing effects. This paper proposes a self-learning-based image/video deblocking framework via properly formulating deblocking as an MCA (morphological component analysis)-based image decomposition problem via sparse representation. The proposed method first decomposes an image/video frame into the low-frequency and high-frequency parts by applying BM3D (block-matching and 3D filtering) algorithm. The high-frequency part is then decomposed into a "blocking component" and a "non-blocking component" by performing dictionary learning and sparse coding based on MCA. As a result, the blocking component can be removed from the image/video frame successfully while preserving most original image/video details. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we propose a novel image interpolation algorithm, which is formulated via combining both the local autoregressive (AR) model and the nonlocal adaptive 3-D sparse model as regularized constraints under the regularization framework. Estimating the high-resolution image by the local AR regularization is different from these conventional AR models, which weighted calculates the interpolation coefficients without considering the rough structural similarity between the low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) images. Then the nonlocal adaptive 3-D sparse model is formulated to regularize the interpolated HR image, which provides a way to modify these pixels with the problem of numerical stability caused by AR model. In addition, a new Split-Bregman based iterative algorithm is developed to solve the above optimization problem iteratively. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvements over the traditional algorithms in terms of both objective quality and visual perception.

Light-Field enables us to observe scenes from free viewpoints. However, it generally consists of 4-D enormous data, that are not suitable for storing or transmitting without effective compression. 4-D Light-Field is very redundant because essentially it includes just 3-D scene information. Actually, although robust 3-D scene estimation such as depth recovery from Light-Field is not so easy, a method of reconstructing Light-Field directly from 3-D information composed of multi-focus images without any scene estimation is successfully derived. Previously, based on the method, Light-Field compression via synthesized multi-focus images as effective representation of 3-D scenes was proposed. In this paper, we study efficient compression of multi-focus images synthesized from dense Light-Field by using DWT instead of DCT-based compression in order to suppress degradation such as block noise. Quality of reconstructed Light-Field is evaluated by PSNR and SSIM for analyzing characteristics of residuals. Experimental results reveal that our method is much superior to Light-Field compression using disparity-compensation at low bit-rate.

In this paper, a practical video coding scheme is developed to realize state-of-the-art video coding efficiency with lower encoder complexity at low bit-rate, while supporting standard compliance and error resilience. Such an architecture is particularly attractive for wireless visual communications. At the encoder, multiple descriptions of a video sequence are generated in the spatio-temporal domain by temporal multiplexing and spatial adaptive downsampling. The resulting side descriptions are interleaved with each other in temporal domain, and still with conventional square sample grids in spatial domain. As such, each side description can be compressed without any change to existing video coding standards. At the decoder, each side description is first decompressed, and then reconstructed to original resolution with the help of the other side description. In this procedure, the decoder recover the original video sequence in a constrained least squares regression process, using 2D or 3D piecewise autoregressive model according to different prediction modes. In this way, the spatial and temporal correlation is sufficiently explored to achieve superior quality. Experiment results demonstrate the proposed video coding scheme outperforms H. 264 in rate-distortion performance at low bit-rates and achieves superior visual quality at medium bit-rates as well.

HEVC is the current joint video coding standardization project of ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and Moving Picture Experts Group. It includes deblocking filter (DF) and adaptive loop filter (ALF) after the deblocking filter. To improve the accuracy, the deblocking filter is modified with the parameter information of intra coded blocks in this paper. Considering that the masking effect of human visual system (HVS) will eliminate the visibility of the blocking artifacts, a combined luminance and directional-texture (CLDT) masking effect model-based DF is proposed. At last, a novel Wiener-based in-loop filter is proposed, which is applied to eliminate the quantization error using both pre-DF signal and post-DF signal. Experimental results show efficiency improvement and subjective quality improvement compared with HEVC test model 2 (HM2.0) anchor. © 2012 ieee.

Query suggestion is an effective human-computer interaction (HCI) approach in information retrieval. According to human vision system, the image retrieval method using visual query suggestion (VQS) can provide a friendly query interface to solve the query ambiguity problem. In this paper, the contentbased image retrieval (CBIR) system is realized first. Human-computer interaction used VQS to obtain users' intention. In this step, user submitted a query keyword to the system. VQS is utilized to provide a list of suggestions, each containing a keyword and a collection of representative images. If the user selects one of the image suggestions, this image will be viewed as the key image. Then CBIR system will retrieve the image sets to return the similar images based on the similarity of image features. In relevance feedback, user scored each returned image by the slider to optimize retrieval results. A friendly query interface is designed to carry out HCI in our system and the experimental result shows the proposed method can improve the average recall and precision efficiently.
