In September 2012, Amazon, the leading Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) provider, launched a secondary marketplace venue for users to buy and sell cloud resources between themselves-the Amazon EC2 Reserved Instance Marketplace (ARIM). ARIM is designed to encourage users to purchase more long-term reserved instances, thus generating more stable demand for the provider and additional revenue through commission on sales. In this paper, we model ARIM using a multi-agent simulation model populated with zero-intelligence plus (ZIP) financial trading agents. We demonstrate that ARIM offers a new opportunity for market makers (MMs) to profit from buying and selling resources, but suggest that this opportunity may be fleeting. We also demonstrate that altering the market mechanism from a retail market (where only sellers post offers;similar to ARIM) to a continuous double auction (where both buyers and sellers post offers) can result in higher sale prices and therefore higher commissions. Since IaaS is a multi-billion dollar industry and currently the fastest growing segment of the cloud computing market, we therefore suggest that Amazon may profit from altering the mechanism of ARIM to enable buyers to post bids. Recommender systems have proven their effectiveness in supporting personalised purchasing decisions and e-service intelligence. In order to support members in user groups of recommender systems, recently designed group recommender systems search for data relevant to all group members and discover the agreements between members of online communities. This paper focuses on achieving common satisfaction for groups or communities by, e.g. finding a restaurant for a family or shoes for a group of cheerleaders. It establishes an algorithm, called I-GRS, to devise group recommender systems based on incremental model-based collaborative filtering and applying the Mahalanobis distance and fuzzy membership to create groups of users with similar interests. Finally, an algorithm and related design strategy to build group recommender systems is proposed. A set of experiments is set up to evaluate the performance of the I-GRS algorithm in group recommendations. The results show its effectiveness vis-à-vis the recommendations made by classical recommender systems to single or groups of individuals. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Featureless visual processing for SLAM in changing outdoor environments

Vision-based SLAM is mostly a solved problem providing clear, sharp images can be obtained. However, in outdoor environments a number of factors such as rough terrain, high speeds and hardware limitations can result in these conditions not being met. High speed transit on rough terrain can lead to image blur and under/over exposure, problems that cannot easily be dealt with using low cost hardware. Furthermore, recently there has been a growth in interest in lifelong autonomy for robots, which brings with it the challenge in outdoor environments of dealing with a moving sun and lack of constant artificial lighting. In this paper, we present a lightweight approach to visual localization and visual odometry that addresses the challenges posed by perceptual change and low cost cameras. The approach combines low resolution imagery with the SLAM algorithm, RatSLAM. We test the system using a cheap consumer camera mounted on a small vehicle in a mixed urban and vegetated environment, at times ranging from dawn to dusk and in conditions ranging from sunny weather to rain. We first show that the system is able to provide reliable mapping and recall over the course of the day and incrementally incorporate new visual scenes from different times into an existing map. We then restrict the system to only learning visual scenes at one time of day, and show that the system is still able to localize and map at other times of day. The results demonstrate the viability of the approach in situations where image quality is poor and environmental or hardware factors preclude the use of visual features. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In order to realize real-time measurement and identification of moisture as received basis in coal-fired power plants, a soft-sensing model is built in this chapter. By introducing mechanism of energy conversation inside the pulverizing system, the model can rationally discriminate between the high calorific value coal (HCV coal) and low calorific value coal (LCV coal) through one distributed computing software. For verification, mass data from field are adopted to show the accuracy and reliability of the model in practical application with coal fluctuation. Identification results show that the model can calculate multiple mills' moisture and summarize to the weighted results through weighting coal feed quantity, and this method can be utilized to meet the need of power plant depending on proximate analysis. The soft-sensing model based on mechanism analysis can effectively measure the moisture of firing coal and thus the problem of safe operation of boiler will be solved. © 2014 Springer science+Business Media New York.

Cloud storage system such as Amazon's Dynamo and Google's GFS poses new challenges to the community to support efficient query processing for various applications. In this paper we propose RT-HCN, a distributed indexing scheme for multi-dimensional query processing in data centers, the infrastructure to build cloud systems. RT-HCN is a two-layer indexing scheme, which integrates HCN-based routing protocol and the R-Tree based indexing technology, and is portionably distributed on every server. Based on the characteristics of HCN, we design a special index publishing rule and query processing algorithms to guarantee efficient data management for the whole network. We prove theoretically that RT-HCN is both query-efficient and space-efficient, by which each server will only maintain a tolerable number of indices while a large number of users can concurrently process queries with low routing cost. We compare our design with RT-CAN, a similar design in traditional P2P network. Experiments validate the efficiency of our proposed scheme and depict its potential implementation in data centers. © 2014 Springer international Publishing Switzerland.

Intrusion detection system (IDS) consists of set of techniques and methods for collection of packets from host system or network and analyzes those packets for anomalous content. IDSs mainly fall into two categories: signature-based IDSs and anomaly detection systems. A rule-based IDS compares the incoming packets against rule set in order to detect intrusion. A common approach followed is to build rule trees or finite automata with rule set and traverse it using a packet as input string. 30-60 % of total signature-based IDS processing time is spent on pattern matching [1]. The existing signature-based IDS cannot meet the speed demands imposed by both high network speeds and increasing number of signatures, and more CPU time is spent on searching for rules that match each packet. In this paper, we are going to present an analysis on IDS that is combined with other methods and techniques to produce greater results and hence contribute to the improvement of IDS. © 2014 Springer India.

The aim of this paper is to investigate how the length of communication links could affect the reliability during operations, by analysing how the Johnson-Nyquist (thermal) noise on the links affects the probability of failure (defined as the probability of switching) of devices/switches scaled to the limit like, e. g., ion channels but also nanoscale CMOS transistors. To this end, we will consider classical CMOS circuits, and base our analysis on statistical considerations. In particular, our aim is to look for the existence of an optimum wire/link length in this context, which would maximize the reliability of the simplest system formed by a communication link (wire) driving a switch (transistor or ion channel). © Institute for computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

The aim of optimising information retrieval (IR) systems using a risk-sensitive evaluation methodology is to minimise the risk of performing any particular topic less effectively than a given baseline system. Baseline systems in this context determine the reference effectiveness for topics, relative to which the effectiveness of a given IR system in minimising the risk will be measured. However, the comparative risk-sensitive evaluation of a set of diverse IR systems - as attempted by the TREC 2013 Web track - is challenging, as the different systems under evaluation may be based upon a variety of different (base) retrieval models, such as learning to rank or language models. Hence, a question arises about how to properly measure the risk exhibited by each system. In this paper, we argue that no model of information retrieval alone is representative enough in this respect to be a true reference for the models available in the current state-of-the-art, and demonstrate, using the TREC 2012 Web track data, that as the baseline system changes, the resulting risk-based ranking of the systems changes significantly. Instead of using a particular system's effectiveness as the reference effectiveness for topics, we propose several remedies including the use of mean within-topic system effectiveness as a baseline, which is shown to enable unbiased measurements of the risk-sensitive effectiveness of IR systems. © 2014 Springer international Publishing Switzerland.

Portable Health Clinic is adapted to provide primary care to a super aged society. A super aged society occurs when, one third of the population is 65+ years and one fifth is 85+ years. The combination of aging society and incidence of non-communicable diseases increases the prevalence of elderly disability and places pressure on health care systems, health costs, and existing social norms. The goal is to reposition the Portable Health Clinic as a health information and affordable disability prevention system. In this paper, we show how the healthcare worker can supplement her competence on medical risk factors with sensor technology and share her knowledge with elderly patients within the community. We suggest that the remote telemedicine call center should be used to support distant screening and surveillance programs and provide early intervention to diseases. We investigate 18,278 Portable Health Clinic Electronic Health Records between 2012 and 2013 to see what are the most important risk factors for ill health in Bangladesh. The field data implies that elevated blood pressure and blood sugar and protein in the urine and the most important risk factors for the elderly population (>65 years) when compared to younger population (
