Real-life environments are open-ended and dynamic: unlearned information comes over time. These changes of environments ask for the systems to have the ability of self growth. A reasonable solution is to build an intelligent human-computer interaction system to simulate the mind at birth, and then automatically teach it by human. In this work, we present a hand-held object recognition system which could incrementally enhance its recognition ability from beginning during the interaction with humans. Automatically capturing the images of handheld objects and the voice of users, our system could refer the interacting person as a strong teacher. This allows the system to learn from scratch and to learn new concepts one after another like humans. Although our system is implemented on hand-held recognition scenario, we also implement experiments on ImageNet dataset to validate the effectiveness of our system. Experimental results illustrate its performance. © Springer international Publishing AG 2016.

The present paper represents a continuation of [3]. There, we studied a new class of variational inequalities involving a pseudomonotone univalued operator and a multivalued operator, for which we obtained an existence result, among others. In the current paper we prove that this result remains valid under significantly weaker assumption on the multivalued operator. Then, we consider a new mathematical model which describes the equilibrium of an elastic body attached to a nonlinear spring on a part of its boundary. We use our abstract result to prove the weak solvability of this elastic model. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2016.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are used to identify diseases associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). But many existing methods did not consider the interactions among SNPs while SNPs form a network in complex interrelated ways. In our research, we attempted to establish case and control mutual information networks based on simulation data of breast cancer associated gene BRCA2. By constructing the network and comparing the network statistics, the average degree of network is found to clearly distinguish the case and control groups. Starting from the network structure, we put forward a method to find "structural key SNPs", and got four structural key SNPs. Two out of these four SNPs are pre-assigned causal SNPs in BRCA2. A large number of simulative experiments and results illustrate the feasibility of our proposed method. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.

Taxi-sharing is an efficient way to improve the utility of taxis by allowing multiple passengers to share a taxi. It also helps to relieve the traffic jams and air pollution. It is common that different users may have different attitudes towards the taxi-sharing scheduling plan, such as the fee to be paid and the additional time to the destination. However, this property has not been paid enough attention to in the traditional taxi-sharing systems-the traditional focus is how to decrease the travel *** study the problem of personalized taxi-sharing in this paper, with the consideration of each passenger’s preference in payment, travel time and waiting time. We first define the satisfaction degree of each party involved in the scheduling plan, based on which two goals are defined to evaluate the overall plan, including MaxMin and MaxSum. Subsequently, we devise a two-phase framework to deal with this problem. The statistical information gathered during the offline phase will be used to hasten query processing during the online phase. Experimental reports upon the real dataset illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2016.

With the advances of network function virtualization (NFV) and cloud computing technologies, a number of network services are implemented across data centers by chaining different virtual network functions (VNFs) running on virtual machines. Since these VNFs consume a large amount of resources and power from underlying physical machines, the service function chaining (SFC) algorithm should be carefully designed in order to meet the QoS requirements of users and minimize the power consumptions. This paper proposes an energy-Aware SFC algorithm that allows users to meet their service latency requirements, while minimizing the energy consumption at the same time. The proposed algorithm is also dynamic in a sense that the SFC path can be reconfigured when the energy consumption of idle servers exceeds a pre-defined threshold of the total energy consumption. We use genetic algorithm (GA) to formulate this problem because it is a variation of the multi-constrained path selection problem known as NP-complete. The benchmarking results show that the proposed approach outperforms other existing studies by as much as 13.4% and reduces both the idle and overall energy consumptions by reconfiguring SFC path. © 2016 IEEE.

Main components of a linac-based THz source at the Plasma and Beam Physics Research Facility, Chiang Mai University, Thailand, are a thermionic cathode RF electron gun, an alpha magnet and a linear accelerator. The electron beam produced from this system is currently used to generate a coherent transition radiation in FIR and THz regimes. To increase the capability of the accelerator on production of the THz radiation, it will be upgraded to be a future THz free-electron laser (THz-FEL) by adding a magnetic bunch compressor, an undulator magnet and an optical oscillator. To investigate the optimal performance of the injector system, beam dynamic simulations are performed by using computer codes PARMELA and ELEGANT. The input 3D field distributions of the RF-gun for PARMELA simulations are obtained from the RF modelling program CST Microwave Studio 2012. The beam transport calculation using the program ELEGANT is performed to study behaviour of the electron beam from the RF-gun exit through all components until it reaches the undulator entrance. Energy slits inside the alpha magnet vacuum chamber are used to select electrons with desired kinetic energies. The alpha magnet compresses electron bunches with certain bunch length before the beam entering the linac to obtain minimum energy spread at the linac exit. Then, the electron bunches are further compressed by the magnetic bunch compressor to have a bunch length in order of picosecond at the undulator entrance. Preliminary results of electron beam optimization with appropriated conditions for the THz-FEL are reported and discussed in this contribution. The usage and market size of video event data recorders (VEDRs), also known as car black boxes, are rapidly increasing. Since VEDRs can provide more visual information about car accident situations than any other device that is currently used for accident investigations (e.g., closed-circuit television), the integrity of the VEDR contents is important to any meaningful investigation. Researchers have focused on the file system integrity or photographic approaches to integrity verification. However, unlike other general data, the video data in VEDRs exhibit a unique I/O behavior in that the videos are stored chronologically. In addition, the owners of VEDRs can manipulate unfavorable scenes after accidents to conceal their recorded behavior. Since prior arts do not consider the time relationship between the frames and fail to discover frame-wise forgery, a more detailed integrity assurance is required. In this paper, we focus on the development of a frame-wise forgery detection mechanism that resolves the limitations of previous mechanisms. We introduce SIGMATA, a novel storage integrity guaranteeing mechanism against tampering attempts for VEDRs. We describe its operation, demonstrate its effectiveness for detecting possible frame-wise forgery, and compare it with existing mechanisms. The result shows that the existing mechanisms fail to detect any frame-wise forgery, while our mechanism thoroughly detects every frame-wise forgery. We also evaluate its computational overhead using real VEDR videos. The results show that SIGMATA indeed discovers frame-wise forgery attacks effectively and efficiently, with the encoding overhead less than 1.5 milliseconds per frame.

We build upon the work developed in [4] in which we presented a method to "locally repair" the cubical complex Q(I) associated to a 3D binary image I, to obtain a "well-composed" polyhedral complex P(I), homotopy equivalent to Q(I). There, we developed a new codification system for P(I), called ExtendedCubeMap (ECM) representation, that encodes: (1) the (geometric) information of the cells of P(I) (i.e., which cells are presented and where), under the form of a 3D grayscale image gP;(2) the boundary face relations between the cells of P(I), under the form of a set BP of structuring elements. In this paper, we simplify ECM representations, proving that geometric and topological information of cells can be encoded using just a 3D binary image, without the need of using colors or sets of structuring elements. We also outline a possible application in which well-composed polyhedral complexes can be useful. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2016.

In this coming ageing society worldly, a wheelchair is very important technical aid for an independent life with aids of elderly people and impaired persons. However, the number of accidents reported by a wheelchair was the worst among all the technical aids (e.g., walking frame, bed, shower chair, etc.) in 2012 in Japan. We propose "Aware Wheelchair" with sensor networks that detect dangers within "Two meters" and distribute awareness and suggest suitable actions to both user and caregivers. The system could also accumulate sensor data in mobility knowledgebase servers. We found that quick warning methods and assist functions that could correspond to various personal types with different physical abilities. We also show the results of wheelchair user assist simulation by the aware wheelchair. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
